More than anything, this is a slice-of-life tale, whisper-thin but still full of feeling and a generous sense of place. With the world's most adorable dragon at the center of it all.

Pete's Dragon has an emotional sensitivity, aesthetic clarity, and all-around sense of fun that creates what feels like an unearned miracle in the current summer tentpole season.

Music to my ears, right here:

Pete's Dragon is a better Super 8.

Saw the part of the movie they were showing at Disney World and it looked great so no surprise there.

So along with Stranger Things we are getting two better Super 8's this year.

And it's somehow a better friendly giant fucker movie than what Spielberg made.

I have no desire to see this, but I felt the same about The Jungle Book...until I saw it. Loved that movie. Disney is on a roll.

Watching the original actually gives you physical pain from how cringeworthy it is.

:( it reminds me of my grandmother. She would bake an apple in the oven for me (like the dragon does in the film) then we'd sit down and watch it. I don't have many memories of her left, but that one stands out.

Too soon to really know what the final score will be but I'm surprised it's so high right now, the trailer looked pretty crappy, thought for sure this would be a huge dud.
I'm just glad I live in a world where people realize that Super 8 is bad. lol

Get me off this world cus Super 8 was great.

It really wasn't. Miserable attempt to appeal to your nostalgia that never really went anywhere interesting.

Stranger Things actually pulled it off amazingly and highlighted the failures of Super 8 even more.

I didn't really like Super 8. It got really violent and the ending was polarizing from what the alien was doing throughout. I'm suppose to sympathize with that thing?

The trailer felt a lot like The Iron Giant. Hope it's that quality, a lot of the themes and story beats would be similar it seems.

The best part of the original was the songs. It's bizarre that they kept the songs in Jungle Book, which was an adaptation from a book that didn't really need the songs, but removed them from here.

1) Screw you all, Super 8 was great.
2) Man, I'm glad to see good reception for this, since it looked like another Spielberg-inspired family adventure film and I want more of that, and I was worried it might not be so hot.
3) ... it's definitely not going to make bank either way though. :\ It might be moderately successful in its own right, but it sure as hell ain't pulling in Jungle Book money, sadly.

Super 8? Pffftt...measure it against Stranger Things.

Who knew this would likely ends up being better rated than Spielberg's BFG.

The trailer left me kind of lukewarm to the movie, but I'm very glad to hear this is starting off well. I am going to see this, and really want it to be good.

I saw it a couple days ago, it was pretty enjoyable. Hits all the major kid's movie tropes, but it at least did them well. Probably doesn't stand out enough on its own to be remembered the way the original was though.
