If this is any indication of how he'll handle debates...

This guy never knows what the fuck he's talking about. He just wings this shit.

He circles around questions without expanding on his proposals, either. His rhetoric seems to mostly, if not entirely, rely on pathos.

He 100% wings everything. I recently found out he never used teleprompters until very recently. He is scum, but when he says he isn't a politician...he ain't lying lol.

He'll do fine in the debates. Hillary will call him out on his lies, and he'll dodge by lying again or changing the subject. He'll never admit to anything, and unless she's extremely well-prepared with like direct quotes from him it'll be really easy to spin as media bias or whatever when everyone talks about all his lies after the fact.

As long as you never admit to lying you'll never be caught. So many people will learn so much from this election. The world of politics has forever been changed, and we'll see this change for decades to come.

(crying internally with a dead smile on my face)

Hillary is always incredibly well prepared for debates. Because, like, she's a policy wonk and know everything. Typically, the moderators actually ask follow up questions during debates, so there's going to be that too. The structure of this years debates matches 2012, with bigger blocks of time dedicated to questioning to allow for follow ups.

This is spot on. It kind of irks me when people say he will be destroyed in debates. Have any of you watched his previous debates? He will just make jokes and make fun of her. Call her, "careless" and so on. He will never debate actual issues. Just.......avoid them by pretending this is his reality television show, which the American people eat up.

EDIT; I wouldn't doubt if he drops a, "you're fired" for nostalgia.

I am confused about how he even made this error. Did he think that Crimea is not part of the Ukraine?

I remember when people were arguing with me that he actually has any idea about... Anything, really. Specifically pertaining to Russian conflicts.

Good times. I hope this allays any fears- He's a fucking moron, and he has no idea what's going on, ever.

It's pretty well documented that people don't tune into debates to hear actual policy being discussed- It's about how the say it, not what they say. Donald will be in attack mode all night, and most people won't give a shit that he doesn't know anything. He'll just look 'tough'.

I don't think he is composed enough to do that though. I think he will just get so angry and defensive and childish that he will lose his cool and just spout some insane shit.

I'm personally banking on this not being the case. The GE is a different ball game altogether. For one, I think there is a greater amount of people that want actual substantial answers to their questions, something I feel Republican Candidates lack since their philosophies are often not based in reason, but in tradition: it was this way for so long, it should continue to be. Or else, it's based in some ill defined emotion, like fear of the other, so they are apathetic to BLM problems, for example, and use excuses to not take the issues they raise seriously rather than reaching a conclusion after careful thought. It's not a flattering picture of Republicans, but it's how I perceive them after witnessing so many of their mental gymnastics.

Second, this isn't a Reality TV environment. The crowd is not allowed to cheer or boo like before. Trump isn't going to look nearly as smart when he delivers his verbal vomit if there isn't a bunch of zombies cheering at what he says or booing his opponents. By nature, it's a more intellectual debate, and Hillary has trump on the ropes there.

He can, of course, dodge and duck, but now that he's up against someone competent and on his own, it might be that he actually stumbles, like he did here.

Although stupid, unforced errors have been the one constant of Trump's campaign, it's hard to keep up with the pace he's committing them.

He is a narcissistic egomaniac who can't handle his opinion being challenged. He can't even handle an interview without coming off as deranged. He is certainly not going to react well to Clinton calling him out on his BS and mocking him.

I think he is utterly incapable of dodging and ducking. He has proven over and over that he can be baited with a tweet. A 12 person debate is much different than a 1 on 1 debate.

Does that mean that everyone will see him as a fool? No, of course not. 40-42% of the population will vote an support him no matter what thanks to the R, but you arent going to win an election with only the base

This guy is going to get absolutely annihilated in the debates.

We all hope this to be the case. We all hope america starts waking the fuck up and see this numbskull for what he really is.

Or would it just strengthen his ignorant fucking base throwing around 'media bias', 'hillary lied' and 'straight talk'. I mean, deflecting with blatant lies is the man's forte.

Half of your country is currently engaged in the biggest carnival of stupid i've ever witnessed. I'm not convinced the debates are going to change it up majorly when the constant stream of incompetency of this dumbass only makes him rise in the polls.

Also they never went all in on him in the primary's debates because despite everything they were still Republicans, and overlapped with him on at least several areas. No such overlap now, Clinton is a complete opposite to him in virtually all policies (not that he has any).

Watched the full interview. Good questions, bad interview.

At some point, you need to follow-up one of his non-nonsensical answers by calling him out on his nonsense. Stephanolopolous just asks question after question as if he's reading from a script.

Right, but then you have to worry about the stragglers who vote for entertainment or have never voted before.

Maybe, but still what you're talking about mostly appeals to his base, not to a general public. People keep comparing his stuff to primaries. It's just a different kind of thing.

I really want to know how Clinton prepares for her debate, and who her Trump stand-in is going to be. I'm pretty sure they will laugh for 30 minutes straight before settling in.

But they should take him extremely seriously. He's erratic and unpredictable (in a bad way). Absolutely should not let him get away with a single talking point. Iraq war is an area they should brush up on, and so is Libya for example.

Also, this is my personal theory, but I think he might actually be...afraid of Hillary.

Like, we know he doesn't like having his opinion challenged, but when Megan Kelly ripped into him in the first debate, he wouldn't come back for the second one where she was a moderator. Plus, that instance where he just snapped at a female reporter who pressed him on a question about his relationship with Russia.

We know he has issues with women, and this might not be gender specific, but I would love it if he actually has a fear of confident, intelligent women who could put him in his place. Especially now that he seems to be trying to come up with a pretense to not debate Hillary.

I might be completely wrong here, I admit, but wouldn't it be just hilarious that underneath all this arrogance and bluster, he's actually a complete coward as well?

His base is already won. It doesn't matter how much more he appeals to them. Now is the time to try and win over moderates, soft-leaning liberals, minorities, etc. A continuous appeal to a base he already owns isn't going to matter much.

On Michael Bloomberg:

Trump: And I think, personally that he made a deal with Hillary where he gets a job, cos Michael Bloomberg's wanted to run for president probably for as long as you've known him, AND GUESS WHAT, he never had the guts to do it! Now I see this guy on stage, saying negative things, he knows nothing about me, he's never been to my office, I don't know him well ...

George: You played golf together.

Trump: Maybe once ... And I hit the ball a lot longer. A lot better.

Can't make this up.

He's like a cartoon character. Trump is pretty much some internet troll running for president.

He just doesn't know foreign policy. This is no big secret, he was getting stumped by softball questions in interviews during the primaries. The weird part is it doesn't seem like he takes any type of steps to bone up on anything.

This will happen a couple more times before the debates, if he even shows up to the debates. He'll say basically the same thing. It's what people do when get cornered talking about something they've been pretending to understand. Back away from the specifics and try to shift it towards something more general.

Its getting increasingly evident that he's solely interested in the Presidential title, not the work it entails.

Some sources seem to suggest that he intends employ someone to handle domestic and foreign policies.

How many goddamn things is this guy "going to take a look at?" His first day in office is going to need to be measured in months, not hours.

Counter take: Clinton will knock him off balance and he will end up calling her a bitch on live television.

"Clinton" and "extremely prepared" go together like chocolate and peanut butter.

Those debates with like eight other people vying for attention? Or those debates with a group of people who couldn't attack him for his blatant hate mongering because they relied on that same base?

He isnt going to look at anything. He'll just have his staff, the staff that has close ties to Russia, do all the work.

Supposedly Trump Jr asked Kasich if he wanted to be the most powerful VP in history by being in charge of domestic and foreign policy while trump focuses on making America great again.

Like, the argument "his base will eat it up" is missing the point.

His base is not enough to win the election! Even when he got a "bump" he's not getting above 40-45% of the vote. His floor and ceiling are very, very close together.

It doesn't matter if the far-far right eats this shit with a spoon. They'll vote for a tree if we pin a GOP button on it! We're talking about the narrow swath of the electorate that is actually winnable for either Hillary or Trump.

You're talking suburban white (mostly women) who are soft republicans. These are people who, you know, don't hate veterans, Gold Star Families and Four Star Generals. These are people who maybe voted for Romney but know there's no way in hell they'll vote for Trump.

No one cares what his base thinks about anything, because they're too far gone. They're irrelevant. These fuck ups are all about the soft middle that is persuadable.

I'm worried there's plenty of Democrats who actually like what Trump is saying, and a bunch of people too fringe to usually vote who are energized by him, and we won't truly realize just how many of these people there are until November.

Sadly, I believe the general public loves this mess. Coming onto GAF is like stepping into a different dimension at times.

Can you not imagine Trump raising his voice so loudly that he overpowers Hillary's talking point just to say, "Crooked Hillary" 8x in a row? He absolutely will. It's all he has. It's going to be a circus because he isn't going to talk about anything but her. Then, the people will be like, "did you see Trump call Hillary crooked to her face?" People are gonna eat it up. It's why this election is more important than ever to actually go out and vote. Don't let people that are voting out of entertainment drown us out.

I fully believe that Trump is only doing this to get back at Obama for humiliating him at the White House correspondence dinner. His skin is so incredibly thin that following Obama making a fool out of Trump he decided that he would become president solely to both eliminate Obama's political legacy and prove that once and for all he is the biggest and best "winner" in the the history of the country.

He'll never admit to anything, and unless she's extremely well-prepared with like direct quotes from him it'll be really easy to spin as media bias or whatever when everyone talks about all his lies after the fact.

Or just try to misdirect and spin. Like today Manafort and all the staffers of his team that were interviewed or participated on debates telling that the real broad issue was about radical islamism, not the family of a soldier killed, the real issue was one of national security and of control of the entry of immigrants and not the mistreatment of a gold star family. Trump then proceeds to double down on the personal attacks on said family.

I think people are either forgetting who Hilary is or what a presidential debate is like. Hilary is never going to be overpowered by Trump. She will remain calm and he'll never be able to grab an upper hand. He will be getting an equal amount of time and if he starts going on one of his usual rants he will look like a loon up there.

Are people also forgetting that she sent toe to toe with Obama for a good number of debates and he is a much more charismatic person than Trump. Her softball debates with Bernie where she barely went after him are nothing compared to what we will see this fall

Thing is, in the general election people DON'T eat that up. Being seen as disrespectful or dismissive greatly harms a candidate in general election debates.

I agree. This is not her first rodeo. She did debating against frakin Obama.

I also think that the closer the election gets the more unhinged Trump will become.

I am not worried at all. The debates are going to make Donald look bad, other than to his base.

Are the moderators allow to call out bullshit if Trump tries to lie about facts or do they have to be completely impartial?

Except this isn't a regular old general election. A lot of people want nothing more than to see a "tough guy" show off his attitude on stage.
