Do you know anything about SS?

English isn't my first language.

If I see two french words that virtually mean nothing next to one another, I'm forced to assume it's a mistake, because it's not called Belle Reve in my country.

Beau Reve would mean beautiful dream. Belle reve means nothing.

Or you could google it before calling something shitty.
I'm a french native, i know.

Its a prison in DC comics.

Let's not start the reviewer witch hunting.

Isn't it fair to see what their opinions are on other movies though, else we have no compass for where the reviewers tastes lie?

I'm not advocating condemning the reviewers taste, but if 90% of people love Star Wars and a reviewer thought it was average, then people shouldn't be falling to pieces just because the reviewer doesn't think much of another movie he rates the same.

When we have a decent aggregate there's no need to look into what their other opinions are, but for now we only have one review to go on and people are already acting like the sky is falling.

Here's a sneak preview for the review thread.

For real? This might be lower than BvS.

I hope not.

This summer is one of the weakest movie summers in recent memory.

I never thought I would see a Bryan Singer X-Men film, or a Matt Damon/Paul Greengrass "Bourne" film, receive rotten percentages over at Rottentomatoes.

It's ok we had ghostbusters to save the summer !!!

Kill me. Pls.

Honestly I think the thing that has me most excited is seeing Will Smith play Will Smith again in a fun movie. It's been a while since I recall enjoying him goofing around on the big screen. MiB3 I guess?

Yet Justice League teaser was met with cries of "trying to be like Marvel."

It's not about how accurate it is; it's about the perception. The "Marvel = fun and whimsy, DC = dark and grits" narrative is pretty established and it'll be a while before either company can shake it.
Not really a narrative, when that was the whole point and appeal. The difference in tone was the main reason to be excited for the DC movies. It was a refreshing change

What is a fun movie? Is The Dark Knight fun? It's psychologically exhausting, grim and has maybe 2 moments of levity in the 2.5 hour runtime. It's also a phenomenal film. Man of Steel and BvS have flashes of brilliance but also come with problems (major problems in the case of BvS). They do not need to be fun or lighthearted, they simply need to be of more consistent quality. Well not "simply", it's not "simple" to make an amazing film. But the tone is not really the issue.
Basically. The DC movies had problems. Tone wasn't one of them.

It's a narrative in the sense that it wasn't really true in DC's case until Man of Steel. Some would say Nolan, but even then, only really after TDK as Begins came out around the same time as Superman Returns. Further, Green Lantern was released a year before TDKR, and certainly was anything but dark and gritty.

Mike's a former reviewer who now works for Alamo Drafthouse (and probably has heard some things) and Ana's a current film writer.

Get ready for those Chris Evans gifs!

I mean, many cult movies from the 80s were shat on by critics.

I wonder if those DC movies are ever gonna be looked back on fondly.

I can definitely see MoS and SS being cases where people have a nostalgia for that kind of direction.

See, something like that is more cause for worry since reviewers are often in touch with each other.

BvS was a movie where critical and commercial response was the same, for some reason I feel like this is where crtics may not like it but the GA loves the movie.

BvS is already a cult movie.

David Ayer would save us from Zack Snyder, he'd save the DCEU, he would be our true king, a bright light in the darkest of times.

Well, where is your God now?!

Save us Zack!
in b4 well at least Wonder Woman looks good!

A cult film that reached nearly $1 billion?

Exactly.

I could care less whether these superhero films are super gritty or super lighthearted. I just want the quality to be high. I'll take whatever tone they want to go with as long as the movie itself is good/great.
