Skydance Television is looking to bring Japanese novel and anime franchise Sword Art Online to the small screen.

The independent production company has acquired global live action rights to Sword Art Online in a partnership with Kadowawa Corp.

The goal is to fast-track the launch of a new franchise by developing the first-ever SAO live-action TV series. Avatar's Laeta Kalogridis will pen the script and exec produce alongside Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross. A network is not yet attached.

As part of Skydance's plan, the company plans to launch a SAO virtual reality experience through the company's interactive arm.

The deal comes as Kalogridis has a first-look and consulting deal with Skydance. Her credits include Skydance's Terminator Genisys as well as Avatar and White House Down. She is currently writing and exec producing Skydance's Netflix drama Altered Carbon. She is repped by WME.

I actually liked the first 4-5 eps of SAO before it got heavy into Kirito and Asuna. So if they could just take that aspect of it if be happy. Even though they won't

When his step sister wanted him, I couldn't roll my eyes far enough.

It's a self masturbatory fantasy, worse than Motomu Toriyama's FFXIII.

A brilliant concept squandered by a totally cliche light novel / shounen manga writer.

I half expect overheard the whole trapped in a game world idea and then wrote around it.

I own Steins;Gate but need to play through it still so I can't comment on that part.
BUTT

SAO is nothing but stanky hot garbage. It's a Gary Stu animu about a dude who is so powerful that all tension vanishes. He literally has lines about how "you can't beat me because of my lvl" or some nonsense like that. It makes for an incredibly boring story. The writing is just....so cringe. It's about a dude who is so insanely average and boring looking design wise (everything in it is bland design wise) yet every girl wants his dick immediately upon seeing him. Again, it's super cringe. It's a show whose concept has been executed a million times better already in .hack//sign. Not to mention the extreme cringe of incest. Or the way the women are generally fridged. Or etc. etc. etc. It's the ultimate definition of what's wrong with current anime.

The sad part of this is that if they had gotten a really good writer to do it, and gave him or her carte blanche to make changes as needed, this could have been a really good show. Instead it will likely somehow turn out even worse than the original.

Well the original idea was that Kirito was a beta tester for the game so given his prior experience he was better at it. And even then he gets his butt kicked a lot during the first arc and he gets people killed. Later on it becomes him being overpowered etc

He becomes overpowered from pretty much the get-go of the show. There's very few moments where he's potentially going to be even close to injured, albeit killed. And since the guy is such a bland Gary Stu you know he's going to be just fine.
