I was told MoS was terrible, and I enjoyed it. I was told BvS was terrible and I somewhat enjoyed it (but thoroughly enjoyed the Ultimate Cut). I'm being told already that SS is terrible. Going by the reviews means, I think I'm going to enjoy this.

Came back from the theater, what a letdown... it's not trash but it's very mediocre, the Joker was a mistake, Harley is overdoing it, only Will Smith delivered, the plot is... wait what plot ?!

the movie is just bland, flat and really disappointing, DCU is pretty bad so far, Marvel can relax, they have no competition right now.

:/

looks like DC can't make a good movie to save their lives

I highly doubt Zack has any say at all when it comes to narrative decisions anymore

Is Johns working a similar position to Feige's at Marvel? If so, perhaps there's some hope after all

I just want the Batfleck solo flick now god damn it

He seems more involved than that, he's actually co-writing the Wonder Woman and Batman scripts (and probably doing some script work on JL I imagine).

Between that, running DC Comics and also working on the CW tv shows, I have no idea when he sleeps or sees his family.

He also advises on videogames, and engages in fairly frequent media appearances.

I'm sure he's forsaken sleep and having a relationship with his family. Batman is his family now.

That's actually good news.

WW looks great from the trailer, I'm hoping that's the one that hits, but when it comes to WB, who knows.

Nah, I strongly recommend to listen to the actual aggregate of opinions from a variety of individuals, namely the user reviews. The amount of tryhard hateful critics and bias is miles less problematic in a pool of 5000+ reviews than in a 40-80 from people who get paid to get clicks and generate controversy for the sake of traffic.

That's why the Steam user reviews systematically rendered Metacritic and similar crap useless and laughable, and that's why "audience score" in RT and places like Filmaffinity which prioritize user scores -with critics reviews being an extra- are actually reasonable unlike complete hyperbole like the 27% of BvS.

We live in a world in which people don't need to buy magazines to read some critic score. Thankfully. Though some people seems to be willingly stuck with that.

lmao at holding up Steam user reviews as a bastion of critique. The place where brigading much like IMDB is a thing. The place where you can just write a dumb sentence and it gets hundreds of upvotes to become the most helpful review.

Ok, let me copy-paste what I wrote before the embargo was over:

Suicide Squad was one of the movies I was really waiting for this year. I love Joker and Harley. I love when bad guys are in the lead. And well, yeah, Joker was almost completely cut out (what’s wrong with the marketing when they sell the it with a character who’s barely in the movie?) and Harley is just ok. Margot is close to nailing her, but she’s just not that psychotic (maybe she should have eaten the same shrooms as Jai). Some executive needs to get his head chopped, when they brought Will Smith forward and dropped Joker. Deadshot is a boring character and I just didn’t find Will good. He’s merely ok, while Leto is actually interesting. Stupid decision.

Enchantress is really intriguing. I liked her as well. Boomerang is still the best, would have liked to see more of him. Solo movie, please?

There’s one huge problem in the movie. There’s too many characters. They don’t grow at all. Will and Margot get decent time, but the others… meh. There’s some odd chemistry going on. It seems like some of the guys didn’t get along. Cold and stiff acting.

Then the added reshoots. They show. And the movie’s pacing is off. Some of the action is strangely off.
Batfleck cameo is totally off. The whole scene feels awkward.

Like said, I was really waiting for this one, but it left a bitter taste in my mouth. I don’t even think it’s mediocre, it’s just a bit better than BvS. It feels like a mess, which some great editor managed to cut together somehow.

It will be divisive. Interesting to see what kind of legs it’ll have. Personally I think it’s around the same as BvS. Hugely frontloaded, then it just dies because WOM will not be that great. I can see #SaveDCMovies trending. WB and DC have a lot to work. This is not a good way to start the universe. Two messy starter movies. I hope it does a bit better than BvS.

Awesome OST though! Best thing in the movie.

2/5, meh.

My boss (editor-in-chief) is a sucker for these kind of movies and even he gave it a pity 3/5. He went in with really low expectations while I was excited. So there you have it. Two reviews for one.

1) The average critic score for BvS is 5/10, not 27%. Pretty close to the aggregate user rating.

2) Steam reviews are as useless as IMDb, due to how easily the upvotes and such can be influenced and manipulated to change its overall rating, If anything, bias is much more of a factor in user reviews than critics, across games, moves, shows, etc.

3) Checking out the impressions of reviewers and people who opinions you trust, find informative, has similar tastes as you, whatever, is probably more effective than just going some average consensus

What is it going to take to get a good DC movie again?
Put your trust in Snyder. He will deliver the Justice League movie you want

I don't think DC Comics has much say in any of these movies. It's mostly WB using DC characters to make movies. Not a single person from DC was involved in BvS or this aside from an Exec Prod credit for GJ. Exec Prod means shit.

Will Smith's screentime is probably written into his contract. Remember the reason he didn't do Django:

When Quentin Tarantino’s western revenge-fantasy Django Unchained was first announced, casting rumors pegged Will Smith as the titular slave-turned-vigilante. But Smith, who teams with his son Jaden in this summer’s sci-fi epic After Earth, tells EW that he turned down the part because his character would’ve been second fiddle to the bounty hunter (played by Christoph Waltz) who teaches Django his trade. “Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character was the lead!” says the Men in Black star, whose departure opened the door for Jamie Foxx to play the role.

Cutting screentime for Joker and others to beef up Smith's role as the lead, while not necessarily what happened here...is probably what happened here.

I really don't understand what Ayer et al. were thinking with this film's villain,
specifically that this threat literally would not exist at all if it weren't for Waller and Task Force X (which might work in a sequel with 1-2 films' worth of buildup, but which completely undermines the entire point of the team when it's their first mission), and that nothing about the nature of said threat - aside from being inadvertently created by Waller et al. - necessitates a black-ops villain team being deployed against them; he/she could just as easily be the villain in a Justice League film

Waller causing her own shit storm is par for the course.

Oh my god this was bad. Like worse than BvS.

What was this movie????

On my phone, I will elaborate (in this thread and spoiler one) when i get home

Now the only ray of hope that I might enjoy is movie is that Jeremy liked it and said it has heart. Which is still better than BvS which was missing head AND heart.

They give like 2 of the squad some pretty superficial motivation, that's basically all the "heart" there is. The rest is just all the same eye candy that's been in all the trailers.

Why does every shot in JL look like it's taking place at midnight? Everything is so dark and drab.

Omg. I just watched this.

It is soooo fucking bad. I wanted to walk out.

What a horrible movie. One of the worst films I've seen in cinemas.

I can't believe how much this sucked. It took so much effort not to walk out. Trainwreck of a film.

Not that I don't belive you but at least tell us what made you feel this way.

My mind is still reeling from what I just watched. I'll type some more later, still on mobile. I'm just so disappointed. I have a hard time thinking of what I actually liked about it.

Drink as many fluids as you can and we'll send a wood panelled station wagon round to get you as soon as possible.

Not even the cinematography?

Nah, nothing really stood out for me cinematography-wise. There were a couple of nice shots, but only a handful or so.

Now that I'm back home I can write more about the film.

Suicide Squad was a huge mess. It's style over substance and not in a good way. I do have to admit that my expectations were quite high due to the trailers and marketing. I was really excited and pumped to see this, as were my friends. And our theatre was packed. We were all so disappointed.

The film is boring. The writing is so bad. The jokes don't land and the action scenes are unimaginative. Some scenes don't make any sense continuity wise either. Like Harley goes up by an elevator, waves goodbye to the rest of the team, and when she gets to the top, the rest of the team is there to greet her. How did they get there faster than her? That doesn't make any sense. There are many of these little moments that just take you out of the film.

I was hyped up for Joker, but he just doesn't work at all for me. The writing and tattoos are silly. I think the film would be better off if he was cut completely out of it. He barely has a story and just randomly appears throughout the film. I actually thought Will Smith was fine as Deadshot, but the writing and script just doesn't work for him. I'd love to him in a stand alone film though.

The CGI is bad. There are a couple of nice looking shots (Enchantress at the beginning), but so many moments that were embarrassingly bad and looked unfinished. Everytime that Diablo uses his powers it was terrible. I won't even comment on the final battle... I was cringing.
Enchantress doing her ridiculous dance will having her "villain monologue" was just so bad.

I forgot to mention Katana. That was the most lazy introduction to a character ever. What is she even doing in this film. She just suddenly appears halfway through with a dumb flashback scene. It was ridiculous.

You guys think there'll be a DC/Extended edition? Cuz if so, I'll wait for it.

Just returned from the theater.

Here's my thoughts.

It was...ehh okay i guess.

It was cool seeing Joker and Killer Croc and Harley.. the rest ehhhhh..

I liked Leto's version. Seemed like straight out of some new comic book. So no problems there.

Killer Croc was nice as well eventhough he looked pretty shitty with out a shirt.. Nipples and shit..

Harley i feel was the star of the movie. Some funny jokes and when she was serious i liked her as well.

Flagg, Deadshot and .. not so much. Flagg character to me seemed really weird. One moment he is this huge asshole, but suddenly he's all buddy buddy.

Deadshot was Will Smith with cool costume. And as usual no helmet for most of the movie.

The plot was pretty basic. The beginning was most definately the strong point and most fun. Around 30 min mark it starts to get basic and something thousands of movies have done before .

I'd give it 2,5/5

I'm sure if making a good movie was easy, everyone would be doing it. Unfortunately, we live in a society where an arbitrary aggregated meter is the sole indicator of quality in people's minds. It doesn't matter what you think anymore. It's the consensus that matters.
No, we live in a society where there are more entertainment options than ever, so people don't always go out and waste their time and money on a movie just because it's the new thing in theaters.

does anyone even give a shit about will smith anymore

he seems to be box office poison at this point, too

dude's career peaked with fresh prince
