I convinced myself to go see it this morning despite having doubts after the reviews. I think the best sum up of it without getting spoilery is "decent characters stuck in an overly edited and generic action movie."

Spoilers for the movie.

The main problem with the movie in my opinion is that the story they wanted to tell never really came together. My main complaint is that there's no real explanation for why these guys end up caring about each other. At some point I'm sure there was, but it's lost in the current way the film sets it up.

Additionally, there are a lot of characters who were just completely pointless. The rope climber, the boomerang guy?, the crocodile, the samurai and the pyro were completely superfluous to the story. I mean, you can see they all had their role in the group at one point, but in the current version of the film they are completely pointless except for to kill a couple of generic bad guys. And it's a shame because there are characters in the film that could have been better if they had just focused on fewer of them. El Diablo, for example, has a pretty decent story. But it gets washed away because there's not enough time to see him grow, instead we go from sullen to into it to sacrifice without ever really seeing him change. It's the same for pretty much ever other character above. Except for maybe the croc and the boomerang guy. Don't really think that they could have been saved.

Overall, the reviews are correct on this film, in my opinion. I think that it had potential at some point, but it ended up being pretty terrible.

I saw it yesterday with my girlfriend. We both found it enjoyable enough. Neither of us were that impressed by Leto's joker and there are a few corny bits especially in the final battle, but overall it was generally enjoyable as most superhero films.

I don't really agree with the critical consensus at all. Feels like it deserves closer to a 65/70 on Metacritic.

Some friends and I saw the film Thursday night at the midnight showing. The theatre was relatively full and people seemed excited to watch the movie, despite the negative reviews.

Score wise, I'd give the movie a 6.5/10, plus or minus .5 points. I'm seeing it again tomorrow to finalize my opinion on it. First view impressions:

Pros:
-The cast was great, Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in particular. I liked Captain Boomerang as well. Jared Leto as the Joker wasn't terrible, but I felt ultimately lackluster. Maybe with more screen time I'd appreciate his overtly dedicated performance more, or maybe I'd see it as grating.
LOL at Rope Guy.
-Some decent cinematography
-Liked the music, though sometimes it felt like a misstep in certain scenes.

Cons:
-At best mediocre script, at worst pretty cringey. DC really needs to hire better writers.
-Editing, editing, and more editing. Many scenes were jarring as all hell, with many scenes feeling uncompleted.
-Boring villain.
-Plot was by-the-numbers end of the world shenanigans.

Overall, I thought it was fun, even if in all technicality it was a "bad" movie. Which maybe the most disappointing thing about the film: so much potential wasted.

DC has their work cut our for them.

I don't think this joker is anything like heath's so the cringe/tryhard things confuse me. He was unlike the others to me.

Read this somewhere... pretty accurate.
Cesar Romero - the clown
Heath ledger - the anarchist
Jack Nicolson - the mobster
Jared Leto - the psychopath
Mark Hamil - the joker

see this is what annoys me. "overly edited and generic" somehow becomes "pretty terrible"

it's like people can't just "be ok, nothing less, nothing more" these days. I honestly feel it comes from that 7.9 mentality from gaming journos years ago. If it's not great, it sucks. If it's not an 8 or 9, it sucks.

Things can be "meh/ok" like you mentioned in your first paragraph, without being "terrible" like you stated in your last one.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion... but opinions seem to fall that way these days. Either great, or terrible. Nothing is just "it was ok."

Still just his opinion and you can not change peoples opinions or how they think of something..

Im seeing it at 1pm.. friend already told me to go into it without high expectations and just enjoy it.

I'd swap Nicholson and Leto. Leto was just scarface with green hair at best. Nicholson was at least doing some crazy shit like gassing a whole city and making chicks wear masks most of the movie.

Saw it last night. What a pile.

Bad script, bad plotting, bad editing, bad visual effects (especially in the climax). The movie was barely entertaining enough to make it watchable but the writing and dialogue were absolutely horrendous.

Deadshot seemed to say the same few lines over and over ("I'll get you there then I'm gone!"). Harley was fine but had some bad lines ("Now that's a killer app!"). Davis was pretty good as the stone-cold Waller. Kinnaman kept switching between stereotypical southern drawl and a neutral American accent.

Joker? Pretty bad. No discernible traits to set him apart from just being a Scarface wannabe mobster. No humor. No charm. Romero, Nicholson, Ledger, and Hamill all effused charisma that made their versions of the character endearing and captivating to watch. Leto Joker was just utterly dull and lacking in any charisma. I don't buy that Harley or anyone would fall in love with this guy.

"I need a machine gun."
"Okay."

The issue isn't so much Leto as it is the character as conceived and written. Like Eisenberg as Luthor, Leto did a fine job playing the character he was supposed to play. The problem is that character sucks.

I never thought I'd say Jai Courtney was the standout in terms of seeming to have fun with his role. The rest of the characters were forgettable. I kept thinking about how the Ocean's 11 remake did such a good job of introducing its supporting characters in just a few minutes. Suicide Squad just didn't manage to make me care about anybody, but maybe that's on me.

WB hinged their big DCCU on two directors with very narrow tonal sensibilities. They can't be surprised by the results. I enjoy much of Ayer's work as a director and writer, but like Snyder he either forgot or was unable to make the movie fun. What humor there was fell pretty flat for me, other than Boomerang's few quips or mannerisms.

Hey WB/DC,

Get away from the grimdark shit and take a closer look at those scripts before starting production on these movies.

I mean, it wasn't okay though. There are plenty of 6, 7 movies out there. I've seen a couple of them recently, actually. This one ain't one of them though, because I feel like most of the characters in Suicide Squad don't actually end up serving any purpose. Without that purpose, the movie falls flat.

It really is more of a 4.5/10 movie, at least in my opinion.

Saw this this afternoon (did a doouble bill with Star Trek Beyond, which I liked). I thought this was really good and the only major complaint I feel is valid was that you either wanted more Leto or no Leto. Cast was great but Smith and Robbie did great work.

Definitely the scariest Joker for me.

Saw it and liked it. Fuck the critics.
Harley was perfect.Dead shot was cool - way more like able than he ever has been. Thought Enchantress as the villain was great - she looked creepy as hell, and she's usually a Superman villain so I wasn't sure how the team was gonna take her out.
Joker.....I'm still not sure about. I liked his laugh and his look (minus those fucking stupid metal teeth) but his voice and mannerisms weren't good. And he was creepy, which is great, but not really humorous or funny. I think Jokers always need that crazy, funny levity. This Joker was basically just a psycho gangster.

Just saw suicide squad and it isn't as good as the marvel movies but damn it isn't as bad as people make out to be. I came in with low expectations due to the double toasted review however this movie is so much better than BvS and Man of Steel. Viola Davis, Will Smith, Margo Robbie and
the fucking sexy
Jay Hernandez made the movie for me.

Pros: Deadshot, Harley, El Diablo, Amanda Waller,
Captain Boomerang

Cons: Story, Villain, Joker, everyone else

The STUpID :
B.E.T.
Did he really just say that...ugh

I thought the
B.E.T.
line was funny and it got a big laugh at my theatre. Also I found it fitting because it reminded me of that one Boondocks episode:

I don't think Teen Titans live action would be nearly as good as the cartoon.
Also no Whedon. Not after Ultron.

AoU wasn't as good as Avengers but it was still a good movie. Whedon is perfect because he understands characters and brings comedy that's actually funny with the two Avenger films. DC's attempt at trying to be funny is a lot cringe worthy.

I don't think I'll trust any reviews/opinions for Suicide Squad. Batman vs. Superman was criticized almost mercilessly and I honestly loved that movie from start to finish. I mean I read comments like "Wait... lol, you didn't think the rock music that played whenever Wonder Woman appeared was... out-of-place?" Uhm, no? Or comments like "And then we had the fight with Doomsday which was totally out of place and shouldn't have been in the movie". Feels like I'm taking crazy pills. Oh, so that awesome fight against a massive, god-like being, versus three different superheroes, spliced in with US military personnel and a nuclear weapon, that whole thing was out of place and shouldn't have been in the movie?

I have no doubt that Suicide Squad will likely be a critical failure and will not have any enduring goodwill, similar to BvS. I just for some reason seem to completely disagree with 99% of people when it comes with these latest DC movies.

I just think he's a boring director and his humor in Marvel is pretty cheesy too, but maybe that fits the Titans. But AoU was a pretty boring and uninteresting movie imo, the only memorable part being Spader as Ultron and even then Button sucked. I just don't trust him to not make something that's like every other marvel film and while there's nothing inherently wrong with that style or direction it stops being cool and interesting for the umpteenth time.

Nah

Heath was a "Joker",

he made jokes, he laughed at his own jokes. His anarchy was funny to him. To me, he got The Joker in live action PERFECTLY.

Letto was a bit too serious, but like i said in the review thread, that was probalby partly the script's fault

Grimdark? if anything i thought the movie was too lighthearted, this is the Suicide Squad, they are the villains, violent, psychotic, dangerous, not a group of superheroes saving the day like the movie presented, that was one of the biggest issues to me. it needed to be more grounded

hell even the Joker seemed sympathetic because he never does anything too evil besides shoting one or two mobsters.

As non comic reader, what makes Harley Quinn so combat skilled? Did she have extensive combat experience? Don't tell me it is because she went cuckoo, she is a psychiatrist not a military woman that went nuts,
she was scissoring cops, dodging monster left and right, is this plot armor or she had some elite training because "I am just craaaazy" is not enough.

I think she used to do gymnastics?

I don't think it was a good idea for their first mission to go against a huge meta like that. Doesn't make sense at all. This team would've folded like paper against a Kryptonian.

Their mission was to rescue Waller, Flag was the only one that was supposed to go against Enchantress I think.

I know what you mean though. I would have preferred something on a smaller scale like Assault on Arkham.
