The problem with this defense is that he's saying there's nothing you can do about her appointing Supreme Court justices if she wins...and then follows up by saying maybe the 2nd amendment people can. That's not voting anymore. He's explicitly talking about if Hillary is elected president, the 2nd amendment people might be able to stop her from abolishing that amendment, wink wink nudge nudge. I don't think the context really helps.

Because he can't win a general election with just his fans alone. His poll numbers are already dreadful due in part to a string of stupid comments and this is going to erode them further. He's already down about 10 points in Pennsylvania. This is not going to play well with moderate voters in the Philadelphia suburbs, and he needs those voters.

There's been a wide gap in enthusiasm between "his fans" and "people willing to say they'll vote for Trump" at any given point in time. And these last couple of weeks he's turned a lot of "I'm not a big fan but I'm willing to vote for him" types into "not going to vote at all, might even vote for Hillary" types.
This shit is fucked up, but the Trump campaign is going to spin it to say he meant for them to go out in vote.
But with all the shit hammering him lately, this will still sting. A few months ago, he could've got away with this easily. Now...this will hurt one way or the other. As it should.

In a way, many in his base seem so unhinged that I'm not sure if arresting him is a good idea, even if he deserves it. I worry if that would be their "spark" that THE ESTABLISHMENT IS STAGING A COUP AGAINST OUR SOON-TO-BE PRESIDENT.
I'd prefer every Republican of note strongly denounce, disavow, and reject Donald Trump. Unrealistic, given that they're mostly cowards, but that would be ideal.

Fortunately, over half of the voters in this country aren't Trump fans.
You still have the moderates and independents that Trump needs.
And when they read something like this, it doesn't make them want to vote for him any more.
If a voter approves of Hillary being murdered, they were already Trump voters in the first place.
This kind of statement only does 2 things. It keeps his voter base happy while losing potential voters, and puts Hillary's life in more danger.
