A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

I love how if this were Ubisoft or EA, we'd all be collectively jumping down their throats, but apparently having a smaller team is license to make things up and/or mislead.

Take note indie devs!

If the point of the game is exploration and he specifically says in an interview you can play with friends and grief a little then yes there's less to that exploration experience

There was never said you could play with friends, the question always was if you could bump or meet other player. If you thought otherwise then you are in denial and just spewing things out of ignorance.

They wouldn't spend time programming something as complicated as online play for it to be "extremely rare".

That's just common sense.

Makes me wonder if there are even player models in the game. If there's no actual multiplayer or third person view, there's no need for them either.
Is that why the players didn't see eachother ? ;)

I remember when I first got Destiny and was hyped when I saw a random party in the distance, then they just vanished as soon as their mission started. Was a bit bummed after that.

Saw this coming a mile away. From not needing PSN to the obvious tech and infrastructure that would require. Hello Games just isn't capable of that.

Really shitty he lied about it so much though. The game should be good enough to stand on its own rather than being cagey and misleading.

11 pages of people falling over themselves to scream cheat, liar, grab the pitchforks when the most logical answer is that their server connectivity has been completely FUCKED for everyone because it's god damn launch day.

Calm the fuck down.

Well, that's part of it. The other part I won't get into.

The first planet I find I will name it to Pasty Smasher Omelette, like that drunk guy who changed his name to that.
Hehe =)

Because it makes the game seem less fun.
They been pretty clear that its an extremely small chance to run into other players, so i cant really see why people expected this to happen often (in other words, if its so unlikely to happen, it shouldnt change the enjoyment of the game).

Molyneuxed.

this made me laugh so hard.

It seems some of the excuses some of them boys are coming up with here are "Procedural generated" as well.

There was a video posted and you're saying I'm just spewing ignorance wat

Meh, don't see why this is a big deal out of the gate. Will wait and see if it's more of a server issue or late decision to axe it for the former's stability before outrage boner time. As Sean said they're gonna keep adding more content down the line, could easily be solved with a patch otherwise makes no sense for him to have mentioned it so much in the past. Wait and see for me. I more wish exploration loop was more satisfying and not hamstrung by survival alerts buzzing around you every minute, that's what I wanna see tweaked more than anything, not some Journey-lite "coop" that will prob amount to no more than "hey", "hey". "wanna break some rocks?" "I guess".

Sure, the servers are to blame.

Call me cynical, but Sean's repeated insistence that you could meet other players however unlikely, followed by the "clarification" shortly before release that this is a single player game......makes me think this was a feature they intended on having but couldn't get it working in time and so quietly scrapped it and made it seem like this was planned as a post-release feature all along.

The two Twitch streamers said they will try again at 9 PM EST, so we'll see I guess.

CONFIRMATION: It is NOT possible

The way in which he answers this question is extremely frustrating, but it is clear, you will never be able to 'see' another player in game. Only traces or hints that other players are there. Maybe put that clip in the OP?

It seems obvious to me that they had some PR/Marketing rep telling them constantly to never come out and just say "No, you will never see a player model in the game."

I dont see how it matters as its clearly not part of the game design.

Would it be neat? Sure. If the possibility of it happening is incredibly small though, then yeah, why spend time making something work that is almost impossible to reproduce.

You are basing your hate on something that was never meant to be the focus of the game anyway, so yeah.
Lol I'm not hating in the first place just disappointed rn, and now you're just moving goalposts. I say I care about multiplayer, Sean says there's multiplayer, you say he didn't say that, then when show he did you say "nah doesn't matter anyway", ok then

Hmm .. I wonder if they had in mind something like space station visitors being spawned by player data, so you might see a ship fly in and maybe have a dialog with something resembling the player. Or 'drivatars' I guess.
As it's been pointed out, real time mp interaction and pause buttons aren't really compatible.

The online servers have been spotty since launch last night so maybe they weren't fully online? I know I haven't been yet. It show online status at the bottom of the pause menu

Yes, but why lie? A guy asked if it was possible to see how you look like. Shean responded, "no, but other players are able to see you".

You can be sure they would have shown two players bumping into each other in a video if it was possible, even if extremely rare. Is there even human AI walking on those planets? Is a human walking animation even in the game in any way?

Interesting that he completely 180s on that during interviews in the other video.

Huh? That video isn't confirmation in any way.

All he's definitively saying no to is to not expect "deathmatching" or any other explicitly multiplayer mechanics, which is consistent with what he's said.

EDIT: He's also explicitly saying "no" to large amounts of people congregating on the same planet. He clearly intended the other-player interactions to be fleeting and distant, but he never denied their existence.

Even Sean doesn't know if it has online play or not!

Clearly, this is what is at the center of the universe... alternative universes where it does have online play.
