A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

Saying it's rare like that implies that it can occur.

Right, and after that he says that if that were to happen "we want people to have a little sense of that."

If the answer were yes, he would have simply said if that were to happen "yes, you will see another player". He clearly sidesteps the question at every angle, and that in itself is confirmation. How you can watch that piece of the interview and say otherwise is surprising.

Guess we're still in the GAF honeymoon period where everyone is pretending that this isn't a pretty big deal.

No need to sugarcoat it. Their messaging was deceptive and dishonest.

It's not vitriol it's just fact. I have nothing against NMS or Hello Games or Sean Murray or space sims etc. etc. etc. I am basically watching all this from the sidelines but having followed the game since it was announced, this is definitely not what they had suggested to us at all, and they had many opportunities to clarify otherwise if they had wanted to.

LOL - ONE DAY.

It took one single day for players to find one another (or not, as it turns out). Like I said, don't doubt the will of the player spirit Sean lol.

That said, I'm betting as it's launch day, there's all kinds of crazy interwebz and interconnectional issues at the moment. Also, there might be a switch they have to flip for players to actually see one another.

I hope they say something about it officially soon though. That video is a dead giveaway that time and space is not being occupied by the 2 players at the same time, even though they are definitely in the same area. Just look at the lighting and such.

Hope they clarify.

I wouldnt say that. If i told i was going to be home at 5pm, but then my car broke down and i wasnt home before 6pm, i wasnt lying. Not saying that this necessarily is the case with No Man's Sky, but if something is first planned, then changed for various reasons, its not necessarily lying. Of course, if things changes, its important to notify regarding this.

Common sense says that you should have called and say you're late. By not calling the others expect you to be there at 5pm. Sean didn't call.

God, if he means something like being able to see what friends have uploaded to the Atlas, or something else that isn't wholly taking control of their character in a friend's world, then...

That doesn't require taking someone's money though.

Then that's something you communicate to your customers paying $60 before the game releases.

If things changed and they didnt notify about it, i agree. They were pretty clear that it was an extremely small chance to meet up with other players in the game, so i hope that people didnt buy the game with that in mind regardless.

This isn't the same thing. You aren't promoting a product.

Different, rules apply when promoting or advertising a product. There is a heightened expectation of disclosure and follow through than "I'm going to be home for dinner at 5."

There are entire government agencies that are responsible for investigating false advertising. It's highly stigmatized by our society in ways that other statements aren't... and rightfully so.

I got the impression that seeing players would be rare just because of the sheer scale of the world but if you took the time to coordinate and meet up it would be possible.

I am vaguely interested in this game but didn't follow any news on it. Not surprised my impression was incorrect and I'm not mad about it either. They probably should have been more clear though.

Jesus people need to calm down. By tomorrow I'm sure he will address's it. And most likely it's a server issue/instance issue that they are having. Its a tiny team and it's midnight here in the UK so they have the launch of the game here to worry about. I think this is not on their priorities right now, but the launch of the UK version.

Its wise to wait for some sort of response from them before you start calling people lies and throwing shade.

That's the exact opposite of what's happening in this thread.

but he lied!

2) It should have been obvious that multiplayer would never make be into the game, the complexity involved cannot be accomplished by such a small team, anyone who thought there would be multiplayer is a moron

This one is my favorite.

I can't recall seeing people so emotionally invested in a game like we're seeing with NMS. It's been interesting to watch.

How?

Until we get more confirmation that this isn't server issues or the developer temporarily turning off the feature (or that a patch broke the feature), or any other reason, I don't see how anyone can call the developers liars or misleading.

You just have people who want the game to fail going "lol fukin liars" and fanboys going "but it doesnt matter" with a smattering of people actually doing the reasonable thing and waiting for more information.

How hard is a quick yes or no, though?

Genuine question for those who are disappointed by the lack of it. What would that one off fleeting 30 seconds to a minute experience of meeting another player add to the game that it's absence renders the game pointless now to some?

The games universe is so big that it would be extremely rare for it to happen by chance. The game isn't even something that would benefit much from MP since the whole idea is to gather resources and explore your way, at your pace. I'm not trying to offend here, just genuinely curious how it would have made such an impact in the first place.

The emotional investment is clearly much stronger in people who are angry about the game. It's been shameful to witness.

Tell that to the defence force.

Again, as a bystander not angry at the game in the slightest, it's the defence force who are the shameful ones. It's a joke honestly, the moment someone makes a very objective simple criticism of the game suddenly they are "vitriolic" or "hateful". Pathetic. Just allow the game to be seen for what ti is instead of trying to apologise for absolutely everything.

Agree.

He's been tweeting tonight of server issues. He could have clarified the whole "MP" situation in one of those tweets.

I hope he does so soon.

Man, if Call of Duty had this issue...

In Journey some people made sure that they were in the exact same place, having the world in the exact same state and connecting the game at the exact same time. Even then it still wasn't guaranteed that you would get connected.

this is something I'm wondering too. the shades in the souls games as well as journey are not guaranteed.. there is a chance that can happen, but it is never guaranteed.

kind of a shame I can physically see the person 100% of the time, but not deal breaker for me

Maybe, and bear with me here because this is a wild idea.

Maybe, just maybe, Sean could have some stones and just come out with a clear confirmation about how it works (or rather doesn't work) and be done with the situation.

I know asking for honesty from someone who is happy to speak in vagueness is a crazy leap, but it's one I'm willing to make.

A big portion of GAF has always loved to hate on indie games. So this was kinda expected to how big of an indie release it is.

I'm just talking about the concept of it being a lie or not if initial plans didnt turn out the way as planned. But as i mentioned, of course if things changes, people have to (or at least should) notify about this if they can.

well..

I think It is pretty obvious there is no networking/multiplayer code
You cant see other people because there is no multiplayer feature.

This is a singleplayer game with a shared dictionary

Kind of like you cant see other players in Metroid Prime even if you are fighting the same boss at the same time. Now imagine if the scan logs were shared between players and you could comment them.

That's it really

How hard is a quick yes or no, though?

Because they may have found a huge bug in the system due to the load and they don't want to say anything until they've worked out what has happened? Who knows.

Either way why can't we all just be patient and wait for a response from him rather than going batshit crazy. Its a minor feature of the game that isn't even represented on the back of the box. Whether he said you could or not before hand.

"Calm down, it's just the first day" totally worked on every game that had server issues at launch. Totally!

If you can't tell the difference in "Server issues suck. I'm mad about the servers not working" and "The developer is a liar and should be ashamed" I don't know what to tell you.
