I'd rather have the Dark Souls style of ghosting other players for brief moments than have someone actually there. While it would be cool to see someone else on the same planet to make the galaxy feel a bit more lived in, I don't want to team up with them or really interact with them in any meaningful way. I don't see why people are so hung up on this feature or lack thereof.

Procedurally generated doesn't mean random in that sense. It's like a minecraft world with a certain string used at world creation. If two players both use the same string, they'll be generating the exact same world via mathematics.

They are procedurally generated, as far as we know every player experiences the same procedurally generated universe. It would be impossible to design a game on the scale of this one the old fashioned way.
This was never going to be true with players being able to communicate outside the game. No matter what limitations are placed on communication in universe, with FTL travel and actual physical places that do not change from copy to copy, this will be more and more common as the weeks and months unfold.
I was being tongue-in-cheek. You sound like a reasonable poster and of course it's okay to express concern over a product, otherwise the products never improve, But if you read the last 3-4 pages or so, I wouldn't call what some (most?) people here are posting as "expressing concern". There's a cesspool of responses, and I think calling a game designer a liar without knowing the full story goes beyond just expressing concern. What's next, "Sean lied, people died"?
I have no skin in this game. I was never going to buy this day one. Lots of just find it interesting from a dev-to-player communication stand-point.
I said that either there's no code for meeting up or that it remains to be seen. How is that not true?

The universe is procedurally generated, its just that every one has the same seed so the way the world generates will be the same for everyone. Think of it like Isaac runs. If you enter the same seed number as someone else itll generate the same exact way.

There is no proof that it's impossible though, it follows along what we already knew and functions the same way as existing online games. If a friend of mine and I go to the same spot in destiny without actually forming a group, it's not guaranteed that we'll see each other.
I haven't deluded myself into thinking that anyone that is in the same spot would see each other which is ludicrous.

I've obviously misunderstood, as I assumed how it worked was that in my game and your game we would have totally different galaxies with each planet having variances.
The fact that each person has a different starting planet reinforced that notion for me.

As I said I thought that was the reason people's starting planets were different, but I guess it's just the fact that they're in a different part of the galaxy as opposed to the same place but just a different looking planet.
But as things stand, if me and someone else go to the same planet in the galaxy the planet will look exactly the same?!

But it's possible that different people have different "seeds" and therefore different galaxies? Even so I assumed there would be millions of different "seeds".

Is there a single screenshot with more then one player on screen? Has anybody physically run into another traveller yet despite it being unlikely and rare?

The multiplayer quote from the article published today is from a meeting back in March. The OP has an interview from July where Sean goes back to saying it's possible but rare. Not sure if you're trying to illustrate a timeline about Sean's change is design of the multiplayer, but that doesn't hold any weight.
He has also never mentioned the word "instancing" when discussing the multiplayer aspect, which is something that we're left to scrounge and piece together ourselves. That burden really shouldn't be on us.
The fact is, his "explanations" have been very vague, but I get that development changes probably had him worried about sticking to a story. But if the feature was completely removed, he should have come out and said that.
But for now that too is speculation, and we have to wait for his official comment on the matter (likely) tomorrow. If this is about occupying the same instance, it will be annoying to consider the fact that he never explicitly stated that. If this is a server issue, then we're all gravy. (But considering how long its taking him to make a statement, it's at best the former)

I have the developer saying it's possible and this far two people not seeing each other in the same spot does fall in line with their comments about how it works- and indeed how other games that share spaces work- like Destiny or Journey where if you and friends are on the same map spot you may not see each other.

My point is that there is cause for concern but that when people make comments like yours in response, effectively engaging these posters in a negative manner whom you think are being unreasonable in the first place, you only add fuel to the fire instead of letting it die.
I would just let the people speak their peace, let tempers fade and let
Sean and Co defend themselves. It should be an easy question to clear up.
I think if the truth about the multiplayer being non-existent was made clear in the first place, this game would have had far less people hyped for it.
Let's be fair, they had an incredibly small team working on it and they've seemingly achieved a great deal based upon that. So fair play to them.
As someone who has kept an eye on NMS, but has by no means been reading previews etc. in great detail, I'm honestly surprised that this isn't an included feature, it seems heavily implied by the general concept of the game and all of the material i've personally seen. Plus being at full retail price as well - I guess I just expected more than this.
Not saying that this will be a bad game at all, but I'm now holding off for a price drop at least. Imagine what multiplayer (in whatever practical form) could have done for this game.

So I just got to home with my copy but after all this details which deflates my interest in the game I'm thinking about doing a return.

All I've seen in the last 15 minutes is the one streamer complaining about mods/chat while the two of them go nowhere near each other in-game.
They keep checking the menu and seeing that they're not connected while one is in the big spaceship and the other is on a planet surface. Enthralling.
