Does anyone know what the point of scanning while in your ship is? Both flying over the planet and in space, it never does anything... except the first time you enter a new solar system it will give you a single random location on the closest planet.

After that it never seems to do any thing.

About five hours in and I absolutely love what I've played so far. No game even comes close to the sense of scope and exploration. The story's a slow build, which I like, and the progression's moving along at a decent pace.

If I had to nitpick anything right now:

- Planets and moons are too populated. Not necessarily with creatures, but with stuff. Just casually flying around the surface of a planet and it feels like I see a base or shelter every 5-10 seconds.
- Fighting sentinels isn't fun. I haven't run into any walker sentinels but I think those would be more interesting than the small flying variety.
- It would be nice to get some idea if a planet's hot, cold, toxic, irradiated, etc., before touching down.

And that's about it for now, really. I can totally understand why this game wouldn't be for everyone but at the same time I still can't understand the foaming-at-the-mouth hate it's getting from certain people.

Didn't really care much about the game until now, but I'm really in the mood for something relaxing that I can play as much or as little as I want to. Plus the scanning stuff and finding bits of lore seen in some footage I watched earlier gave me Metroid Prime vibes, which got me kind of excited.

Should I wait a couple days for the PC version? I can't seem to find any video of it. The pop-in I'm seeing in the PS4 version is a turn off, but it could be just as bad on PC for all I know.

Weird. I was finding all sorts of stuff. Maybe depends on the system you're in?

I found this ship abandoned on my starting planet :

How do we tell how good our ships are? I Googled the name and came back with nothing.

I have a DLC ship. I got a prompt to check a life source, found the alien who gave me the hyperdrive blueprint.

Is that the quest you're talking about?

Did your DLC ship come with the hyperdrive? I believe there were two DLC ships and one did not come with it, maybe from GameStop?

I'm pretty sure the only difference between ships is aesthetic design and the amount of inventory slots it has.

Sometimes ships will have a lot of nice upgrades pre-installed.

You should also pay attention to the location of the default tech in the slots. If you can find one with the default techs with open slots next to them you can link upgrades to get bonus multipliers.

Did I screw up by redeeming the pre order ship? Before learning how to build warp cells? I also bought better ship after it. But never made warp cells

You can compare the ships side by side. You can see what kind of equipment that new ship has installed, if it needs fixing, and the number of inventory slots, as well as 4 categories that are represented by how much the circle is closed around each one.

Yes, it has a hyperdrive. It's a PSN preorder bonus.

Anyone got any tips on how to upgrade your multitool? Mine only has 6 slots and I have all these upgrades I can add but I have no slots to put them anywhere. Do I need to just search for a new one?

I personally changed it via PS4's custom button assignements. put the option to enable / disable custom button mapping on that quick menu aswell (When you hold the ps button)

go to options -> accesibility

First thing i will do when i get home. I looked for an option to customize the controllers in-game, but I was sad to found none.

I also think i got stuck on the tutorial bug; redeemed my ship and i think i missed the hyper-drive mission; i wandered around an hour last night, but had no indication of what to do now.

I'm really tired of this guy who's discovered everything around me. I just landed on the planet 'H'. Dude, just upload, don't rename. I dunno if "Poop" or "H" is worse.

Yeah, good point.

If you acquire a ship that has an upgrade you haven't discovered, do you automatically get that blueprint?

Nope

I'm starting to come to the conclusion that I'm playing as a space dwarf. He's super short, just barely as tall as planet shrubbery, and loves to mine. In fact, that's what he's the best at, mining everything. He's also a pretty good tinkerer, so I haven't ruled out that I might actually be roleplaying a traveling space gnome.

After a couple of hours of playing last night I've also learned that my space gnome/dwarf never took any classes in land navigation, and has just the most rudimentary understanding of celestial navigation. It certainly makes traversing planets challenging without any sense of cartography or map navigation. But he's damn good at mining the shit out of stuff.

I still don't know why planet sentinels hate him so much. Space gnome prejudice? I haven't seen any signs, laws or rules that prohibit the melting down of planetary resources.

It's VERY wonky and the NMS server has to say "online"

-I go to Galactic Map
-Press Up on D-pad to 'search for discoveries"
-then wait for a sound
-press right on D-pad and it'll scroll through the 'closest discoveries" which USUALLY show my previous discovered systems.

Thank you.

One last noob question. I used the preorder ship early, immediately really, and never got the tutorial. I feel as though I figured out most of the mechanics and just traded for antimatter.

I'm a few systems in and never got the follow a floating ball or freeform choice I see people referencing as far as I can tell. Am I boned?

Do I need to keep these Gek Charms? Has a value but I was not able to sell it. If I need it I will keep it but I need the inventory slot.

Yeah, what's with the bug making me really short?

Also, everyone really should try melee-boosting. Run, melee attack, then immediately jump and glide and get insane speed.

So what are some general impressions of the game so far? Is the game fun? Is there enough to do?

I can only speak for myself obviously, but I think it's okay. It's what I expected: copy/paste design, fairly shallow overall, lots and lots of repetition and samey planets and flora and fauna. It's not really impressing me after about 10 hours of play, feels a lot like busywork. I expected as much though, but I still really wanted to see if my initial gut feeling was gonna be correct. I'm sure I'm a minority on this though, people seem to love it.

No idea, so sorry. I got lucky and waited to redeem it until after I got the hyper drive blueprint.

Why weren't you able to sell? Did you make sure you were in the right inventory at the sell screen? You should be able to sell it no problem.

The OT has been pretty positive as far as I can tell. There are a lot of people who haven't enjoyed it outside of here though.

I find the game fun and there's been enough to do.

Hoping that's the case for a significant number of more hours.

Did you already have the quest when you redeemed the ship? When I redeemed mine right when I started the game, it no longer gave me the quests to get the hyperdrive, instead it wanted me to get out of the system to continue the story. This made it so no other ships had hyperdrives and I had to get rid of that ship to restart the quest.

I'm naming my planets after literary star systems. My first system was after Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere.

Thank you.

Whoa... i did the exact same thing as you and immediately got the ship and started to fix the upgraded ship... never got the antimatter or hyperdrive blueprints and bought materials.

I've never even of this floating ball to follow or "freeform" choices!? Oh... fuck... ???

Outside of VR, this is the first game to ever in my life give me motion sickness. I only played for an hour last night and felt a little sick to my stomach.

Dwarfs should be respected more.

Nope, sell them all. Sell all the artifacts you find.

You may need one for an upgrade much later in the game, but you can buy one at a space station if you need it.

I think you can only sell things in your exosuit inventory. I had to move a charm and a dagger from my ship to my suit in order to sell them.

Whoa, is this confirmed? I thought it was just a trade item?

You can select between inventories at the sell screen, on the left.
You'll see "exosuit inventory" and "ship inventory" hold X over any to switch to that inventory.
In an abandoned building

Thank you, sir!

So what are some general impressions of the game so far? Is the game fun? Is there enough to do?

I played for about 5-6 hours so far. I'm having a blast, and it only gets better the more you play it. It's been said a million times, this game isn't for everyone. You're going to be spending A LOT of time in the menus, re-fueling weapons/ships, discarding/stacking/moving inventory. I am in love with the art style and just the entire universe looks outstanding going from system to system and planet to planet. I was worried at first that the planets would start to feel to samey, but I've been to 6 start systems now and I'm starting to see some pretty good variety.

My main complaint honestly is the inventory constantly filling up too quick. I just need to find more upgrades, but it's fucking annoying.

You'll run across new ones in facilities.

Thanks man!!

there's a tab for "ship inventory" on the left hand side of the trade screen. I missed that the first time around, too ... thinking i had sold all my shit only to realize my ship was still filled to the brim with gold and "fascination beads"

Anyone got any tips on how to upgrade your multitool? Mine only has 6 slots and I have all these upgrades I can add but I have no slots to put them anywhere. Do I need to just search for a new one?
Yeah, don't worry about any expensive upgrades for your tool for a while. If you do upgrades, do the cheap ones. I say this because with some effort, you can get your gun upgraded to 20+ slots in not too much time.

This game can be played so differently, so it's hard to give advice past that. You can find multi tool upgrades doing basically anything. The correct prompts in alien discussions, you can find them in all sorts of buildings for sale, I think obelisks can give them to you, and those upgrade stations you can find on planets, I wonder if they can upgrade things for you other than armour slots, maybe they can give you weapons.

Like... Just play the game however you want, and in time you'll see tools!

I'm planning on trying to find every animal on a planet soon, because the rewards are so big - I'm just scared because aliens scare me.

first lock up in over 20 hours... thankfully it wasnt a hard lock was just about to unplug to console and the error report thang came up.... hope its my last..

I've been able to sell mine. You probably have the wrong inventory selected at the shop screen (suit vs. ship).

As for if you need to keep them, I dunno. Haven't run into any Gek around here.

Highlight of last night's NMS foray was the discovery of a half-crab, half-mantis hybrid that scuttles around on its eight legs really fast and had a nasty habit of attacking from behind. I could just hear most of GAF screaming "NOPE!" and running away, much like I did.

You can do that, or at actual trade terminals, in the upper left you can switch between your suit and ship inventories.

After a short math quiz I found a new ship...ugly as fuck but way better than mine :/... I wish we could keep our old ships >_<
