I understand the complaints about inventory management. I'm an RPG/Survival packrat. However, once I abandoned trying to mine a reserve of every mineral I came across it ceased to be a problem and I was enjoying myself even more. I stilll upgrade my suit every chance I get. Upgrades are getting expensive.

Also died for the first time.
(possible spoiler)
Pirate scumbags came after my valuable cargo about a half dozen times. I took some of them with me!
The rule in my mind is: Survival meters should add tension to tricky situations, not be the primary source of danger to the player.
Hah!
Different playthroughs I guess, but I've never even come close to being held back by a meter. The other dangers though...

So finally my copy arrived and my first planet is pretty cool but it's nighttime and I keep hearing strange noises even though there's no animals lol

Also lots and lots of caves surrounding me. Shit's like Minecraft.

I did a quick timelapse video with ShareFactory, if anyone cares: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLTzrVWyi9U

I plan to do a whole lot more of them, this game is soooo pretty. Towards the end of the video you can even see two ships flying by, beautiful.
We need a no-HUD toggle though.

Anyway I'm really liking this game. It's exactly how I pictured it (didn't watch many trailers), so I don't really understand most of the complaints from people who expected something else.

EDIT: of course, bottom of the page again.

I didn't watch many trailers or follow the hype. Pretty much forgot about it until it went gold. But then I did watch a ton of streams when it started to leak, so I guess that's why it's exactly what I expected. And exactly what I wanted.

Gonna spoiler how I got more slots cause IDK how the thread is handling it but can you please answer the question in spoilers?

Is the only way to get more slots to find those crashes beacon things that have suit upgrade slots in them?

Suit Upgrade Spoilers:
No there is other spots to get suit upgrades. With AtlasPassV1, every single space station has a suit upgrade you can buy in the left doorway.

Has anyone figured out what "Records" are, and how to acquire them? I got 9/10 on this moon in about 40 minutes, and I've been trying to stumble across the last thing I need for over 5 hours.
They are different species. Sometimes you'll find multiple genders of one species and you can scan them individually, but to complete the Record you need to scan every single unique species on a planet.

I'm guessing the starter ships are all the same/similar, but I wish I had a better view out of my cockpit while I leave a planet/re-entry. Not being able to see below/behind you very well kinda obscures the transition, maybe that is intentional.

3rd person view while in ship form would be great, but much lower on the list of priorities I guess.

So I don't know if the game has this or not, I haven't gotten far enough, but it could benefit some basic mission structure, based on what your character wants to do. Want to be a trader, maybe an alien sends you to another system to retrieve some resources or make a deal. Want to be an explorer? Maybe a space biologist needs you to catalogue 5 plant and animal species on planet X. Mercenary? Go wipe out that cruiser in the Gamma system. Make the rewards varied and interesting and that should help provide some variety.

I feel pretty sure that NMS is going to be a fairly different game months from now than it currently is. Formulas will be tweeked and new stuff added.

Found my first Utopian planet lush with grass, trees, lakes and caves. The colors and atmosphere is amazing, the soundtrack somehow fits the incredibly calm landscape. Not very many threats and when a storm came in I was about to scatter for some cover but just sat in the windy rain as it barely had no effect on my suite. I think I'll call this home for the next couple days.

I can't stress the bolded part enough. The only thing you need to carry is plutonium. I've hardly been mining at all. If you find you need another element then either walk over an find a bit,, or just buy it.

You can actually play the game and never even shoot a single rock.

I came across a peaceful snow forest planet that caused the framerate to dip when I flew close over it. Not terribly, but it was there. Perhaps it was the density of the trees.

That's the planet I really want to find.. I really want to find a snow planet. I can't remember the name but I'd have loved to find that planet that they used to demo the game a while back (the one everyone else said they were sick of. I'd love to find a planet like that).

So far I'm finding toxic or hot planets (Though my first planet was a easy planet, just needed life support and had a bunch of life too... in fact the only planet I've found life on).

These would be really cool additions. But they need to let us map the planets first (Good luck finding that trader again if he's on a planet without a map). Or at least be able to mark quests so we can mark the trader to find again.

10 hours in and that preorder ship fucked me. Fucked me real hard. Like the kind of fucking that happens and you just grab on for dear life and don't let go.

All that shit I've done down the goddamn drain. I was too far, and finally changed ships like a dunce, and lo and behold the new one doesn't have a HD. That's cool, I'll just ma- oh fuck I don't have the blueprint.

They'd be wise to let people buy some of these things once they pass a point of no return. This is dumb.

I found another system that had been discovered by another player last night, and it was in warping distance. I jumped about 4 systems to get there. It looked like they didn't care about discovering things, because of the 4 planets that were there, he went to one and nothing was discovered on it.

I'm not in the process of making my way back to where I started out. I was thinking about going back to my home planet, but I'm not sure if I want to use up so much fuel at the moment. I have a really long journey ahead of me to begin with...

I had trouble finding my home planet at first, because when I decided to look for it, I was 8 systems deep. It turns out that searching for nearby discoveries highlighted my own, so I kept a waypoint on it.

I think one of the main touchstones for this game was the original Elite, which was very freeform. It mainly relied on the player's imagination to be what they wanted to be. I imagine when they add freighters and other stuff it will make it easier for people.

Also think I'm going to go for the PC version on Friday. The FOV on PS4 is really annoying, and I think this game will really benefit from config modifications and mods.

I've been thinking about doing the same. Ultrawide support plus a better FOV and unlocked framerate (hopefully) sounds so good.

I suck so much at space combat, any tips? I can't aim. I'm just going to keep recharging my shield and run away for now, would eventually I have to fight to progress?

Use the Phase Beam for combat. Upgrade it so it cools down quicker and does more damage. It rinses enemies and whilst I don't admit to winning every fight whilst using it, It's FAR easier to get kills with than the Photon Cannon.

I wonder how many people are like me and don't rename squat.
Do you at least upload? Cause if yes, then thousands and thousands lol! I guarantee it.

How do you feed the creatures? Do you just not collect the carbon from a plant or something?
Have bunch of carbon in inventory, run up to creature and hold square till you see that happy face. Pay attention to creature afterwards & the green exclamation mark that sometimes pops up once it poops you gifts!

You can load your previous save, as well as your current one. It might be too late now, but if you realise you've messed up right away it could help.

Are there not other ships for sale? I found a cheap ship with a hyperdrive at my first space station.

Once thing I will add to inventory. The only elements I really like keeping on me are those immediately needed and at least 1 Silicate, Oxide, Isotope.

I accidentally skipped that step as well, but for now I've been OK. Apparently you'll be OK if you keep buying ships with a HD and the blueprint can be found at outposts.

EDIT: of course, bottom of the page again.

Have to study it more but while the planet day/night cycle works pretty well, I don't really get the sense that the orbits themselves are happening/realistic.

I've only been to a few systems but seems like the planets are conveniently clustered close to each other relative to the closest star, and their positioning doesn't change much.

Renamed a few things at first but quickly got over it and haven't renamed shit since. It's cool but I'm too lazy to come up with names now.

Cba to rename plants and animals. But planets and systems I've renamed a few. Only ones that I care about though that have cool planets :)

Wow. That 'you can't see other players in NMS' thread is an embarrassing mess. Nice to see people here are enjoying it!

Yep. A fucking dumpster fire. Game is fucking fantastic. Sean has ALWAYS said that it was never meant to be a multiplayer game. And he's fulfilled all his promises about the game IMO. So I wouldn't be surprised if this one is true too. Just need time for the servers not to be dooky.

I have received a message from a nearby planet, went there, turned on the beacon, visit outpost and received blueprints (when I switched from preorder ship to new one without HD)

Starbound does this, and it's the best way to play the game.

Between this and We Happy Few, devs don't seem to understand that survival mechanics are only compelling as an additional component of a greater challenge, not a constant, nagging irritation.

The rule in my mind is: Survival meters should add tension to tricky situations, not be the primary source of danger to the player.

This is why I'd contend that Fallout 4's Survival mode is actually really good. You're never going to die because "OMG it's been 10 minutes and I haven't eaten/drank anything!" Instead, being hungry/thirsty effects your ability to fight off the raiders and creatures that are trying to murder you. You end up with much cooler scenarios like: "Oh man, there are feral ghouls outside of this door... but I can't wait in this safe room forever because I'm out of food!"

Managing meters for 50% of your playtime is stupid.

Just a clarification: Starbound's casual mode does not have infinite fuel.

I rename every planet with a description so I remember what it is, and maybe it'll be helpful if someone else finds it.

One thing I noticed watching other people play is that no one uses the PS4 gyro for typing. God, it's so much quicker than using the Dpad!

I'll go check and see. I got some stuff to sell so if I can do that, it's not too bad.

I feel like I've gotten the majority of the blueprints already, so maybe it'll pop up.

I'll keep playing if they can deliver it to me eventually.

I wonder how many people are like me and don't rename squat.

i renamed the first galaxy i was in, and the first planet....after that i gave up naming becasue its pretty useless.

uploading on the other hand is a must.

i'll only name somethign now if its mind blowingly awsome... i may continue to name the planets i go to because i have a nice system going for them to keep track/order

I upload when I get connected .... Sometimes... Servers are swoomped

Did that. Named something like chickenhorse or someshit

so no one else has a 100% crash on the way to their first "anomality" ? Should I restart ?
I also never got the warp drive blueprint, so I cannot buy any ship ??

this is a fun game...... :|

Also, I did my first bounty hunt last night. I warped into a system and got a notification about a nearby bounty coming up on me. Took him out, got 10,000 units and some resources.

I'm thinking they'd mark the quests to incentivize exploring new systems. I'm no programmer but this seems like something that wouldn't be too hard to implement.

One thing I noticed watching other people play is that no one uses the PS4 gyro for typing. God, it's so much quicker than using the Dpad!
Nah.
Is a matter of preferences. I love gyro controls (Wii, Move, etc), but I don't like typing or aiming (Uncharted Golden Abyss, Splatoon) using regular controllers with gyro. XD

Oh, come on.
There's an entire thread about that. :/

It says single player on the box. I'd be more surprised if it was multiplayer. I guess they may add it, but it should be clear it's a solo game.

this game you guys.

That's what I've heard from several other people. As someone that redeemed the DLC ship at the beginning, it's good to know the game won't let you get stuck like that. :)

I'm sure it been asked and I apologize for doing it again.

How do I clear off waypoints? I have just left my first planet and I have like 20 of these things. It's annoying.

I have completed all of them too.
