A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

This is why it's best not to mislead people and set up false expectations of your passion.

You should be aware of that before you put a product to market.

This whole thing could have easily been avoided by being more open

I think Sean Murray is an awesome dude and the game he created seems amazing. That being said, it's wrong to mislead customers.

Yeah, I understand a that, but in the grand scheme of the game, it is a pretty small feature that he's always downplayed anyway.

This thread has gone through so many incarnations it's hard to keep track.

Festivus level Airing of Grievances thread, adversarial debate thread, the faithful vs the faithless, joke thread, avatar thread...

What's next? Have we even hit all the stages of grief yet?

Saying a non-existent feature exists in your game, but not trying to highlight it as a feature of the game is not "downplaying" the feature.

He said the chances are so low that you probably wouldn't see anyone at all. Even he was surprised it happened so fast. Unless of course he was faking the surprise.

They said that the only way for you to know how your character looks is for other player to see you. So yeah, it's implied that you can actually see the other player in order for this to work. If this was a thing but now isn't they should just come out and say it.

That isn't the same as what you said.
Yes it is. The only point of contention here is about it being an interactive online game.

He said you can see people, but the size of the game would make that an unlikely incident. You cannot see people. This isn't downplaying a feature. It's making one up.

It's not a small feature. It's a large feature and a selling point for many people. Even if it is rare, the possibility of it keeps me playing and drives me to move forward. It excites me.

Sean Murray should hire some of you on as his pr guys. He knows that people have run into each other. He knows that they couldn't see each other. Instead of answering the question he dodged it and tweeted out a good 4-5 tweets after. All in the time he could of answered a simple question. Can you see other players when the servers are functioning properly?" Yes or No? How are people supposed to interpret that behavior? Give him time? Give him time to do what? Come up with an excuse or pr spin? Give him time to try and rush and implement it because they didn't expect people to run each other so soon? Because either the feature exists or it doesn't.

Damn! This has turned into a PR nightmare for Hello Games. Sean is eventually going to have to say something more definitive on this. The longer it goes on the worse it looks. This will always be the first thing he is asked from the gaming community until he finally answers it.

I'm thinking it will work at some point.
Either they haven't flipped the switch,
or it has to be unlocked. (reaching the centre possibly?)

We'll see.
Give the Dev the benefit of the doubt.
Who knows, maybe they're trying not to spoil it.

Then maybe they shouldn't have said their game is an interconnected multiplayer online world where players can spontaneously run into each other in addition to being a procedurally generated universe of planets?

Haha why do gamers take everything at face value. Maybe they planned for that and then found out it would be too difficult. Any backlash to this game re: what was "promised", is so predictable to me. Anyone could see this was going to be a simple exploration game.

Consumers have a reason to expect their product to contain features if its advertised that way. "You should of known better" is not a valid defense. Don't say your game will contain something when it doesn't. Theres unreasonable expectations and then theres the developer literally saying certain things would be in the game. And honestly its such a small feature that I think most people are upset at the way they're handling, or in this case, dodging the issue then they are about the issue itself.

While it has seemed obvious that it's a single player game for quite some time now, most exploration games are multiplayer. I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to look at this genre and assume it's going to be single player.

I was going to get this on PC, but now I'm just not getting it until it goes on sale.

Not only was I skeptical about the gameplay loops which from the previews looked kind of tacked on but misleading it's fans telling them they can meet each other in basically a single player game, yeah that's gross. I'll just play elite dangerous in the meantime and space engineers is on special on humble bundle for next to nothing.

This is probably what's happened but they've tried to be coy about it in their tweets to maintain their hype.

so this is basically john cena the thread huh

The delusion is strong with this one.

They did. There have been several interviews where Sean Murray explicitly said "You can run into and see other players".

Actually he said there was a slim chance That you would in a world so big. So we went from A slim chance of seeing someone,to its a huge missing MP feature.

I wouldn't have a problem with this if they came out and said they couldn't do it...but they haven't

Any content cut without upfront honesty before release and money being handed over is clearly on the buyer! We should know better.

Right?

...

Nah. Doesn't matter who it comes from this kind of nonsense goes on far too often in this industry. If you speak about something or advertise it and then need to cut it or shelve it for later then you best tell your audience before taking their hard earned money.

I think the real story here is that two players already managed to "see" one another. I thought that was supposed to be a super rare event. Like, one in a billion. Wasn't that the general consensus around here?

If so, then why are people upset about a supposedly missing feature that very few people would ever actually experience? I mean, Hello Games probably could've handled this situation better but I don't see how this could be a deal breaker for some people.

Or the servers are overloaded since the game JUST launched. I know I haven't been able to connect to their servers since the game launched, and I've actually played the game unlike 90% of the people in this topic.

"Pay me $5 and for a year, you will have a slim chance of winning the lottery every week. The odds are astronomically small though."

*pays me $5*

"Oh yeah, I lied about that. You had absolutely zero chance of winning the lottery. I didn't even do anything. Wait, why are you mad? You had a "slim chance" of winning anyways."

There's been multiple reports of this happening now, one guy had 4 different systems in his vicinity all named by 4 different people.

Also the two original guys also came across a planet named by a third guy.

People are upset because they said a feature was in the game and talked about it multiple times on TV and then they removed the feature without telling anyone and now they won't upfront say if it's in or not.
