It's definitely worth getting the hang of. It's incredibly noticeable in practice, you won't have any doubt if you've done it right. Just need to keep an eye on your Jetpack gauge (hnnnng just remembered I have a jetpack boost tech to install once I finish my current tasks)
Hey, is your jetpack buried behind the life support and hazard suit components in the exosuit? I don't really see how you could connect a jetpack upgrade to it, is there a way to rearrange those components I'm missing?
Blew 3 hours last night, amazing experience. I wish takeoffs took less fuel though, like 10% instead 25%. I never want to go *too* far from my ship because after my inv gets filled I know I'll have to hoof it all the way back.

Reading the GAF thread is killing me, too much on at the moment with the Olympics and this game is a serious time killer. Not sure if NMS is messing about with my clock as I am sure I have popped it on for a quick run and it is suddenly 3 hours later.
I'm a little disappointed in the complete lack of communication from Sean and Hello Games via Twitter or what have you. Seems like they've released the game and abandoned it when this is supposed to be the most exciting and hyped up part of it.

While there are plenty of planets that have plant life and animals, out of the two systems I have fully explored I have only found one that is bursting with life, and more notably, has grass everywhere.
Grass is super rare in this part of the galaxy I guess I do actually hope those types of planets continue to be rare for me though, makes it special when you come across them.
Still haven't seen a single planet I'd call legitimately "lush," but last night I found my first that is really pretty. It's super green and at night turns deep purple. There are these narrow, super tall stone arches dotting the surface every so often. It's lovely.
This looks quite similar to the planet I started on, I even had similar arches (though not quite so tall). Mine wasn't so green, though.
Having then been to a barren planet and seen some other people's screenshots I'm glad I started out somewhere relatively cool. I think that makes all the difference.
Lots of cliffs and deep ravines on my planet, though. Some of the stuff I wanted to access like a beacon was totally inaccessible. That was pretty cool. I thought I'd come back when I had a better jetpack.
Hmm can someone who is on the Atlas path describe when and where they got the AtlasPass V1 blueprint? Trying to help Wallach and FlyinJ, but definitely don't think you guys need to worry yet.
Generally to find
Nada and Polo's anomaly
I think you just move systems toward the center and it'll show up in some system or other.

That's a good point. Not sure if there is a way later on maybe.

I followed the Atlus Path and got the AtlasPassV1 from
Polo
I believe.
There was no waypoint or anything regarding the AtlasPassV1. I just followed the Atlus path (in galactic map) for two or so jumps then saw an anomaly and it was

That's how I got the blueprints too, but I'm not on it. I just ran into it after making a few jumps along the path to the center, don't know anything about Atlas path stuff yet.
'Mechanics' probably the wrong word - I think from start to finish you'll be doing traversal/weapon/flight/dialogue/inventory - but it introduces a lot of new systems.
- bounty missions start popping up
- larger space battles happen the closer you are to the center (can be either pirate attacks on freighters or warring races)
- the 'Atlas' plot line open up - it gives you its own waypoint (not galactic center), its own location puzzles, and its own rewards (I haven't finished it yet but hear it has demands and dialogue options)
- the 'Nada and Polo' plot line opens up - rewarding you for specific discoveries and optionally pointing you towards black holes which are pretty cool
- on-planet buildings and ruins start getting bigger (to begin with I would only find one 'ruined building' at a time but now, most of the way to the center, i'm finding big sprawling series' of ruins)
- mathematical puzzles in observatories, abandoned factory situations, and crashed ship landings all start getting harder and more interconnected with other systems like language, inventory, lore knowledge
I don't feel like I've found everything yet, and I'm sure there's a limit to all of this, but right now it's more than enough for me - i.e. whenever I get bored I can always play differently to find different particular things.
And big late-game spoilers I accidentally read:
I don't think this is ALL that happens, but apparently once you reach the center of the galaxy you get the option to keep exploring Euclid or to travel to a new galaxy... And your goal becomes the center of the universe. We know you can get substantially more powerful warp drives and that black holes can leap you around 1 million lightyears at a time, so hopefully subsequent galaxies won't be as 'long' to traverse.
But more importantly: This matches with what Hello Games said in interviews - that the closer you get "to the center of the universe" the more the procedural generation algorithms start breaking. Weirder planets, more toxic atmospheres, significantly weirder animals - to unrealistic and apparently nightmarish extents.
I'm looking forward to that, even if I'm not looking forward to a potential grind to get there.
So again after reading gaf impressions I've caved and bought it. Traded in fallout 4 and overwatch for it, both of which i barely played. Pretty excited

I just read that by scanning a point of interest with your analyzer (L2), you can set a custom waypoint when you're at an outpost, crash site, etc.
Can someone that's currently playing confirm this? I'm at work.
Hmm. Hints toward what? What have you done so far and what are you trying to do?
Some of the notifications gamewide may be bugged and stay on your screen too long. I noticed "Sprint depleted" or whatever sticking around long after it stopped being true.
My thoughts as well, PC release is the main focus now. Wouldn't be surprised if a patch 1.031 was also release with minor fixes for crashing and game breaking bugs.
FOR ANYONE LOOKING FOR A RELATIVELY QUICK WAY TO GET MORE INVENTORY SLOTS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
So I also had an issue with inventory slots but then I started going to every "?" circle that I could find on my planet. My starting planet had three ? mark locations that ended up having a drop pod looking device with a blue glowing outline around it's door. All three of these had suit upgrades that automatically gave me 1 extra inventory slot each.
I highly recommend flying around your planet and scanning for "?" locations (green circles with a ? in them) and checking them out. They usually have something worthwhile even if it is not a drop pod with a suit upgrade.
But, as other have said, it's best to just sell stuff you don't immediately need as you find it. Keep things that seem special but you don't need 4 inventory slots full of Zinc, etc.
Ok this star system I'm in right now is a gold mine so much so that I named it $Gold mine lol. Planet rich with emerils and gold and suit upgrade pods all over. 4 planets in the system none of them have a hazard to worry about or any wildlife and all look drastically different. I'm not leaving

I found a "desert planet" with huge rocky cliffs and plateaus that sometimes had water far, far below them. And on top of one of those plateaus I found a school? herd? of fish who seemed to be trying to burrow into the ground. Oddly, this killed the game's performance. Not just framerate, the entire game felt like it was in slow motion.
(Later, I eventually found a school of them actually in the water.)
Also, on this same planet, when I got out of my ship once, I clipped through the ground and was inside of one of the huge plateaus. Eventually I was able to escape by blasting a hole in the rock with my multitool's grenades, which I had just happened to install.
So,if you watch a lot of streams, you can see that the same types of planets all pretty much look the same, but with some changed colors on the environment and the animals.
I've seen the same animals and plants on multiple streams tons of times.
Getting the hyper drive without building makes the blueprint much harder to get...I think it also skips some story elements...at least that's what I noticed when I started over.
Quick question. I'm pretty sure I've chosen Free-Roam but in my galactic map under waypoint, there appears to be a Atlas Station in the opposite direction from the center of the galaxy of where I'm at. I originally thought this was the planet I started from but now not so sure. Any other Free-Roamers have the same thing?
Posting just to possibly soften some worry about the preorder ship bug, if anyone's still worried about that. I deleted my save last night for fear I wouldn't get the hyperdrive part.
After playing for a while on my new file, I felt bad I didn't at least investigate further on my original save, so I restored it from the PSN backup. Following exactly what the atlas suggestions were; Open the galactic map, warp to a new system, Scan, it found a waypoint, that waypoint produced the hyperdrive print. I was relieved.
A side note from my experiment, on my old save, every time I would load the game from scratch, after the No Man's Sky splash, the galaxy and stars streaming past would start in a deep lush purple color, and fade around an overall dark pallet until my planet loaded.
When I started a new game, I noticed loading in would produce a bright green backdrop followed by other bright colors. Every time. I then deleted/started again twice more before restoring my original save, and both of these produced the same colors. After restoring my save, I was back to purple.
tl;dr - I think where you are in the galaxy produces a repeatable opening load screen color, (and possibly galactic map coloring?) and I think new saves are created in similar general areas, and as they fill up, new areas are generated.
I don't think people are really comprehending what an achievement this game is. A tiny group of developers have made a fully procedural universe that really hangs together. I was kinda dubious that they would pull it off. I thought there would be lots of repetition of just too many unbelievable structures or creatures. But it is so immersive. I just visited a lush planet with flying fish things in the sky - it looked liked every part of it had been carefully crafted and placed. It was incredible. I've only put 4 or so hours in, and visited 4 planets that were vastly different in terms of terrain and wildlife, and the sense of wonder still hasn't stopped.
I was starting to feel like I was bored with gaming this gen; enough GTA 456, Darksouls 29 blah blah. This is the first game in a long time to really hook me and it's inspired.
On another note - has Sean said anything more about PS VR?
I'm not even playing to seek out/catalogue life on this character (everything in these shots was murdered by me seconds later), and I haven't found any really lush, thriving planets yet, but I think so.
