The OP got the thread he wanted...

But like you said best avoided....

I can't help but think that people who hunger for threads like that are rock hard and reaching for the lotion when it happens. Getting joy from controversy or negative news is fucking weird to me. He definitely got the result he wanted. I refuse to feed the flames.

NMS isn't beyond criticism, that's for sure. It has a lot of things that grate or annoy, but nothing that I think won't be resolved with updates and bug fixes. I'm pleased with the core of this game, and I think it's foolish to think that it's going to remain in this state forever. Although, even if it remained as it is now, I'm still getting ours of joy out of it, and the thought of further updates and features has me very excited.

I imagine they'll patch in the communities most wanted tweaks and features given time. Not sure if they have the infrastructure in place for multiplayer, but I'm sure if they do, I doubt they'd refrain from adding it if that's what people want.

The day 1 patch already showed their desire to provide quality of life improvements to the game, so I'm 100% certain some of our minor gripes will be patched in time.

The big one I have right now is not being able to stack consumable items like Bypass Chips. Why do they take up an entire slot each?! Why can't I stack 10 of them in a single slot? Same deal for carite sheets and fascination beads and shit like that. Give me a small cap if you want. I'd take being able to stack 5 at a time, but give me something!

I'd still fill my suit with resources and need to hunt down upgrade slots, but at least I'd be able to do more before having to sale, transport, or jettison resources. I'm still using the preorder ship, so my ship has barely any slots. I've found three exosuit upgrades on the moon in currently on, but I hope to find more in my next system.

So actually I'm on this dead planet that has this HUGE caverns, just a few plants and minerals and no fauna at all... BUT the shape of the tunnels... it makes me think that there were giant worms once. I explored for a while looking for them but I didn't find anything, the reason I did this (and it's killing me still) is because this planet has this strange big and loud noises of animals... like whales or cows or jungle noises like orangutans but the planeta is dead! there's no life other than alien explorers in camps... what it's making the noises!? I tried to get close to them but I'm sure I was right next to the source of the noises and it was nothing...

My theory:

1) Animals actually exist and they are hidden, it might be giant worms due to the shape of the tunnels.

2) The noise come from the plants.

3) The planet is alive, maybe it killed the fauna, devour them but it doesn't matter.

4) Ghosts from the former animals, obviously worms.

I'll keep exploring before making my decision about what's really happening in this place.

You know, I feel that you always do the same in this game but it's so full of stuff unanswered that I can't keep doing my own story without anything spoiling it for me, it's fantastic.

It's like you are on the planet I was just on. Same situation.

So how are people enjoying this game/what are your biggest complaints other than the whole seeing people thing? It's surrounded by so much negativity right now that I can't get a good read. Getting it tomorrow on pc

My only issues so far are mainly technical, which I hope the PC version fixes.

Other than that my issues are mostly minor. The inventory system is at times frustratingly restrictive. The loop can at times get monotonous, but every time I feel like I'm getting bored I see something that reinvigorates me to keep going. The game really doesn't explain anything at all and that can be seen as a negative to some, but I don't mind it. The procedural generation does show its seams at times when you see similar stuff that is only slightly different, but that's not a big issue nor is it surprising to me.

Mostly I am having a great time with it, but it's not perfect by any means. No game is.

Right so I've just bought a new ship and forgot to transfer my Atlas stones. If I transfer back to my old ship do loose the money I've just spent?

I think I might have a bug or something. I got a recipe for a health module upgrade. I don't remember ever seeing those before but it said I already had the recipe. So I went to install it but couldn't find it in my recipe list anywhere. And I double checked and it's not installed anywhere either.

Am I missing something?

Okay. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I can't figure out what exactly the rings on the side of the screen mean for each category (exo, ship, multi). Is it just, at a glance, how good that item is at a given task?

Was just going to post that flight controls feel awkward as fuck. Any tips? Just left first planet.

Honestly, it's a learn as you go sorta thing.
The first thing I had to was to invert the control stick, though. Flying that boat any other way is hellish.

I've been doing more air combat that I originally planned, so I'm going to have to play around with it a bit more. I have been using the roll buttons (L1 + R1) quite a bit more. I want to say you have a much sharper turn when you roll + pitch up instead just moving the left stick in either direction.

Pretty much, yeah.
I don't have an image of the UI in front of me, but when I get home I can take a look and provide a few more specific details.

This planet has such an array of colors and shapes but here's a small taste. Very weird place and I've seen a LOT of strange ones so far. I don't have to go far to find blue ground too.

Mm. Also. Is there a good site so far that is compiling a list of recipes and where to find them? I don't quite mean specifics, but more in the way of..

Hey, you found a signal scanner. What should you use your bypass chip to find? Monolith, or something else?

Yep, they give boost. Put e.g. all mining laser upgrades next to each other and so that they touch mining laser point and you will get bonus boost(s). Yesterday streamer redid his upgrades like that and mining laser got ~75% more powerful.

XYXX or XXYX etc., also vertical and zigzag placements work.

X = Upgrade

Y = Function to be upgraded

Oh, I get that, mine are touch and glowing green. I am just wondering if there is a benefit to Theta + Omega or if Omega just tops it out.

The way I saw it was that the phase beam is your more powerful weapon needing a charge, whereas your Photon Cannon is your basic, unlimited shot. Though it's weird because people are having this bug with the Photon Cannon saying it needs to be recharged (yet still working) so who knows.

I've actually found it better to use the Photon Cannon for mining. It's unlimited and you can fire off a wide spread of shots to hit stuff in the time it would take to fire just a couple of phase beam shots. It's also preferable for hitting stationary targets like turrets and containers on the big ships, the phase beam is very sticky and can draw aggro from a side you don't want to disturb.

Hmm okay, yeah I guess I was assuming it had a parity with your multitool, with a mining laser and a combat weapon. I guess for the ships they're more multi-use.

And yeah to be honest, I haven't even used the phase beam! I use the photon cannon for all asteroid smashing.

Side question: is there a way to completely stop your ship in space? I always end up slowly going backwards when I'm trying to stop. I just want a "turn off all engines" option.

Ok so, I kept exploring this planet because I refused to believe that the noises were cues to find caverns (they're probably that but I don't want to believe that

My third planet was dead, but had those haunting low-resonance sounds. It was really rather disconcerting. I'd like to believe there's some giant demon living deep inside the planet, but it's probably a bug. :/

Same here with the nickel. Big asteroids seem to have it.

Aluminum has been pretty scarce. Green shards like emerald. Usually found by plutonium or has been for me.

Oh man, now I don't want to leave my starter system. The moon of my starter planet is aluminum heaven. It's everywhere. I'm thinking I should mind a bunch and take some with me before I jump. Or sell it if it's worth something. I don't have a lot of units since I've upgraded my mutltitool and exosuit a few times...

As much as I am enjoying this, I do wish those earlier trailers either hadn't come out or had been a little more representative of the planet visuals. Seeing the stuff from the E3 2014 trailer or the portal trailer, I just really don't think the planets will ever look that and that's a bit of a downer. Maybe over time with changes to the universe seed or mods on PC but I am doubtful.

Found so many suit upgrades on an empty, lifeless planet. Now more slots than my starship, lol. Killed about 20 sentinels there as well.

Can't put this fucking game down man.

There are little bits of lore and unusual interactions like this scattered all over, but you have to remember that none of this was placed by hand. It's great for putting together your own stories of the history of a planet like that but there's no finding out "what really happened" if that's what you mean.

The idea that there's stuff to discover is what's got me. If you can find some cave with a killer monster that haunts the planet, I think that's rad. The stories I make up for a planet aren't as fun. Finding hints of the past in actual hard evidence (items, logs, animals, etc) is what I'm looking for.

My worry with the first impressions from people is that it's just a game of jumping planet to planet collecting resources to get to the center. I want more than that. A game with stuff to really discover and find - secrets and creepy or awesome stuff that sets your experience apart.

9 jumps, almost 3 dozen planets and countless hours and not a single abandoned ship seen. And I still don't have the atlas pass v1. Wtf am i doing wrong????

I've been farming money all morning. I have enough to buy a really great ship. What should I look out for when buying one to know it'll be worth keeping for a long time? Possibly end game.

Anyone found useful stuff underwater?

I got my special oxygen helmet and a few stacks of zinc ready for some diving, but all the ocean planets I've found haven't given me a reason to explore. No elements underwater, no rare resources, just some fish.

same here. still have a 7 slot multi tool, too.

about the atlas pass
you get it if you follow the atlas path, eventually you'll meet someone who gives it to you

So how are people enjoying this game/what are your biggest complaints other than the whole seeing people thing? It's surrounded by so much negativity right now that I can't get a good read. Getting it tomorrow on pc

Love the game but my biggest complaints are:

-Forced space combat. I warped to a new system earlier today and immediately got attacked by pirates. You can't use your pulse drive to flee when you get attacked so if you aren't prepared then you'll probably die. This would be fine if the space combat was any good, but it's extremely barebones and just not very responsive. By far my least favorite part of the game.
-Lack of variety in the architecture of points of interest. I'd like to see buildings with more unique features, but hopefully that'll be something they'll add in future updates. Space station interiors could use some more creativity IMO.

All things considered if those are my biggest issues with the game then I'm okay with it.

HOLY SHIT. You guys I just have to share this story with you all. You probably don't remember but for the last couple of days I have been searching my starting planet looking for my starting location. When I first took off from there I didn't use the distress beacon and have been fretting ever since whether or not I would miss out on something later on by not accepting Atlas' guidance. Well guess what just happened?

When all hope of finding my starting location was lost and I was about to leave my starting planet for the final time, I landed at one final outpost to say my goodbyes. Heading inside I find a control panel with a series of numbers tracking the faint pulses of a distress beacon. I input the correct number in the sequence and was given co-ordinates to the beacon of a downed ship. I leave the outpost and take off in my ship but the location is on the other side of the planet, a good 30 minutes away with my boosters. I leave the atmosphere so I can use my pulse engines which makes short work of the distance.

Coming in to land I notice a nearby monolith so I thought I would head there first. After landing I noticed that it has already had it's knowledge extracted. Slowly heading up the hill to the distress beacon I get a sense of deja vu. Cresting the hill, the sight I saw was unbelievable... ... It is my starting location. The ship is gone, long since abandoned for something better but sitting right there, is the distress beacon with an offer from Atlas for some guidance... Wow. This is insane. What are the odds of that ever happening again?

That actually happened to me last night. Lol. Same situation. Solved a puzzle, got a distress beacon for a crashed ship, went to investigate, no ship, but there was my atlas. I had already talked to it at the start of the game, but talking to it again offered me the same choice of following or spurning it. I chose to follow it again. lol. I was disappointed because I was hoping I'd find a new ship! Lol.

Guys, thanks to the other thread, I've learned that NMS is devoid of content and a clicker in space with zero gameplay besides click stuff, get stuff

Finally found a generous planet with plenty of suit upgrade pods and other goodies. Now have more slots on my suit than my ship and all the blueprints for warp juice. Hyperdrive is happy at 100% now.

People can say whatever they want about this game, but when you come across a gorgeous or mysterious world it never loses it's sense of wonder and is always welcome after a string of hell worlds and wastelands. I simply call this one... Blue.

It's pretty barren so far, but is really mesmerizing with the color and overall atmosphere. Pics do not do it justice.

Anyway, I just love this game for what it does do. Warts and all.

Are you searching for transmissions with your bypass chips? I've only found 3 crashed ships so far, but that is how I found them.

Sometimes it will even say as an objective, "Transmission intercepted-Crashed ship location found".

Can anyone tell me what to look out for when looking for copper and iridium? I need some for my warp drive but I've not found any at all after many jumps and even a trip through a black hole. I've been scouring for large ore deposits but now I'm wondering if maybe they don't even come from them.

Found the first Space Anomaly in my 5th system. Choose
to learn how to use black holes. I really wanted to choose explore freely, but i just watched Interstellar so. I hope it doesn't lock me out of stuff.

I think some rules for gathering resources effectively are going to emerge, Sean has alluded to this a few times, like things being more common universe-wide on certain types of planets.

Right now I need aluminum, copper, and nickel; anyone know where I should head to find them?

You find ship distress (crashed ships) signals by solving the number puzzles in random outpost buildings.
