Also don't expect every old game to be patched you'll only be setting yourselves up to be disappointed. Games that still sell well like GTAV and 1st party games have the best chance of being touched up from what I am hearing.

if that's the case then GTA V and Destiny seem like likely candidates
and hopefully Witcher 3

on the 1st party side UC4 is a lock and maaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe something like Ratchet & Clank

It'll obviously be on a case by case basis, but I imagine Sony will be inclined to allow anything that doesn't alter gameplay significantly. I don't see why "better" destruction would be considered Neo-specific. VR that doesn't work on PS4 would be, or skipping destruction entirely on PS4.

Neo Destiny bundle. :D 1080p/60
Performance improvements in multiplayer are expressly disallowed.

Not widely, if you go through the topics regarding the neo, even after the document leak, you'll see many people looking forward to the performance increases on non-patched games, especially since the Xbox One S came out.

I mean of course you'd need a patch to let the games access the 18 new compute units in the GPU, but for games with flexible programming (like the ones that improved on the xbox one s), they would've benefited without the developers having to do anything by the gpu and cpu upclock.
If patching in Neo support is as simple as saying, "Yes, please," to the extra horsepower, I imagine a lot of games would get that, especially if they felt their sales may have been affected by performance concerns initially.

Can't help but feel cdpr will be one of those devs with a patch for neo. Tw3, u4 and gta v patches are all I need anyways.

I did say before that it was a mistake by Sony, before people said the usual mobile has nothing to do with gaming.

It's nothing to do with mobile. It's about grabbing attention and headlines. The tech headlines on that day will be for the IPhone 7 and not Neo.
Meh..two completely difference markets...iPhone is always big but it's still a yearly thing. A new PS4 will still get tons of coverage right alongside it.

I don't think it's a mistake at all.

I know that PSVita revision thread was bunk....but seriously I would buy a Vita revision in a heart beat if it has L2 R2 and was beefy nough to play modern indie games

I would be hoping anything 1st party or Sony published should get a patch.

I must have missed this rule. Let's see the citation please. Because that is bullshit if we can't get 1080p/60fps on Battlefield 1 MP because the base PS4 is stuck at 900p with a framerate all over the place. I think you are wrong about this or Sony is full of shit only allowing only half of a game(and the most important part) to be improved performance wise.

I wonder where that leaves Bloodborne.

That's 1st-party, right? There's probably a decent chance it will get patched.

No, i think Battlefield will be fine, because it also targets 60fps on PS4.
Destiny on the others hand runs at thirty, so they don't allow sixty for PSNeo.
So you would get a massive gameplay improvement playing against regular PS4 and that's what Sony want to avoid

BF targets 60fps but its variable. Hence NEO will likely be a solid 60 considering the upclock of Jaguar in addition to the GPU and bandwidth.

I'm fine with not allowing 30 vs 60. But not allowing the Neo hold a steadier framerate when it has the same target renders the upgrade useless.

Well, I guess I have no idea where I came up with that. Maybe I read it here on GAF, or just assumed that would be the case because there'd be no player segregation. Seems sorta unfair to force PS4 users to compete against users with more snappy machines without at least letting them opt out.

Anyway, sorry for the confusion. m(__)m

Really? Why would anyone even buy it like that? =/

Beats me. I sorta assumed games like that would at least have stable performance already, if not native resolution as well. Regardless, hoping for Neo to fix broken PS4 games seems like a terrible precedent…

Yup. And if Apple really is only doing one event this year, then there's going to be product announcements/launches for the Apple Watch 2, new iPads (less interesting nowadays but will probably get headlines) and an all-new MacBook Pro design since 2008. And since the events are in close proximity to each other (they'll probably overlap with Apple starting earlier), the same journalists can't cover the same events simultaneously.

PS4 2013 (Labeled UHD capable in efficientgaming.eu but may not be, will find out with Firmware 4.0)
PS4 2015 (upgraded Southbridge) (labeled UHD Capable in efficientgaming.eu but but may not be, will find out with firmware 4.0)
PS4 2016 NEO (confirmed UHD Capable)
PS4 2016 "Slim" (rumor but could use the same southbridge NEO uses )
PS4 2019 10nm Navi (in efficientgaming.eu as 2019 navigation power cap drop)

Where are the various PS4's on the following roadmap? True Audio Xtensa DSP HiFi can I think support 2017-2022 Object based audio and is in all 2013 and later game consoles and AMD GCN 1.2 (2014) and later dGPUs as well as Kaveri and Carrizo. Main use now is for Virtual Reality (Positional audio).

2013 XB1 has HDMI 1.4a with HEVC 10 bit for HD media which straddles the 2012-2014 lines. (Labeled UHD capable and HD capable in various letters.... confusion! Chart shows it was possible to support UHD in 2013 (framerate and color depth are a function of a HEVC codec without hardware acceleration having difficulty (more expensive) supporting higher bandwidth UHD media) but now confirmed HD capable only by Albert Penello of Microsoft)
2016 XB1 Slim (confirmed UHD Capable)
2017 XB1 Scorpio

Things can get really crazy in BF but it should be stable .
You will always get frame drops in certain MP games unless you have a good overhead .

Right now I'm betting your wall at home is full of pictures connected by strings to cut-out newspaper articles.

Would you guess that the 2016 PS4 is going to support up to 2019 UHD TV features when a NEW PS4 ships that may support 2020 and later features (8k) but a 2013 PS4 can't support 2013 to 2016 features? Remember Sony has said that 4K support is how they are going to pull themselves out of the hole they were in.

The new Sony FCC Radio posting for 5 Ghz WiFi with schemes to support higher bandwidth and more robust WiFi is needed for 4K. That this is not in the 2013 or 2014 PS4 may indicate they are not UHD capable. There is a second and third generation coming for WiFi likely in time for 8K in 2020.

Are you seriously serious? I mean, are you trying everything to argue for your hypothesis?
Perhaps Sony will just put a standard WiFi chip in the box because the current one is so crappy that it is barely usable and has *nothing* to do what this thread is about?

I am providing information that does not support my hypothesis. " That this is not in the 2013 or 2014 PS4 may indicate they are not UHD capable."

We had this discussion on 5 Ghz before, 5Ghz by it'self is less reliable in many cases because attenuation in walls is greater the higher the frequency. It's only advantage was less congestion in Apartment buildings and Condos. This changes with the new protocols 802.11ac-20 -40 -80 which have the data rates and robustness for 4K.

serious question?

Here's what I'd like in a PS4K:

1. Increased performance: First prioritize 1080p, then 60 fps, then reducing pop up and adding graphics effects.
2. 4K UHD Blu-ray player. and possibly more silent then the chainsaw-level BD drive current PS4's have if possible at all.
3. 4TB internal HDD. If not then at least a 2TB drive lol.
4. Aluminum casing and 4 rubber feet on the bottom.
5. Dualshock 4 where the top black area is aluminum matching the console, and better battery life.
6. Enhanced wi-fi connectivity & speeds.

its funny that you describe the PS4's BD drive as a chainsaw, when its actually the quietest of the 3 next gen consoles during bluray playback...

I'm fine with not allowing 30 vs 60. But not allowing the Neo hold a steadier framerate when it has the same target renders the upgrade useless.

a framerate that is equal or greater is one of the requirements for Neo games...i dont we will see many 30 vs 60 situations...but i definitely expect much more stable framerates on Neo...IMO the very first thing devs should do with "Neo mode" is 1080p and a ROCK SOLID framerate...whatever the number they decide to go with 30 or 60 i dont particularly care...but make it rock solid

But this is only a side-effect which means in general Wifi improves over time to allow more bandwidth. How "robustness" has anything to do with the actual bandwidth needed for 4k is also beyond me. 4k is only an application for network, not the main driver in any case.

Oh god....more derailment...

serious question?
Yes. I don't play that stuff at all, but I assumed that like fighting and racing games, performance would be the top design priority in a shooter. I mean, if you guys are happy to buy it the way it is, I suppose that's why it's the way it is, but I got the impression that Vine wasn't particularly happy with it. /shrug

Thanks for the insights Jeff, it's appreciated. Wouldn't be able to dig that stuff out by myself.

I was never expecting it to access all 36 compute units, only 18 (since that's how many ps4 has).

The thing is the wording in that documents suggests in base mode, it won't have access to the extra power the 18 compute units, and the 8 cpu cores are providing thanks to the upclock, like as though in base mode, it'll be downclocked to ps4 levels.

"All specs that affect title behavior are same as the original Playstation 4 system"

hence the sigh...

Also, MS was PR stuff. From a couple of interviews and all the confusing messages around e3 after the reveal, it's really apparent in hindsight that devs knew about the slight boost that the xbox one s has, that could lead to slightly better performance here and there.

This on the other hand is official documentation meant for devs stating that it'll have the same specs as the original ps4 system in base mode.

There's a difference.

But this is something that could be changed even pretty late, and if they were indeed planning on restricting the extra power from base mode before, I hope the good reception of the xbox one s performance increases has changed their minds. I mean, these are basically effort-free neo upgrades applying across the board. Sure they won't be even close to taking advantage of all the extra power in the neo, but it still adds value if a game that was dropping to 25fps on the ps4 is running at a locked 30fps on the neo.

A part of me wishes I hadn't seen this (because for all we know things have changed regarding this, and I'm disappointed for no reason), and another part is glad that I came across this so I have my expectations in check if it indeed turns out to be the case.
Interesting. So with that being the case, does that mean games that run unlocked won't see any performance boost without a patch?

If the FFXV delay rumor turns out to be true, then it suddenly looks like a very good candidate for a Neo tech showcase. Especially with its visual flaws on the PS4 being known. It'd be a great title to show off just how big of a difference the Neo can make.

Won't games like Second Son - that has unlocked framerate - automatically get better performance on Neo? Just an example

Yes, exactly. If the base mode on the Neo locks the GPU at 800Mhz and CPU at 1.6Ghz aka runs at PS4 spec (like the document is suggesting) we won't see performance increases from any games that aren't patched. Really hope Sony has changed their mind regarding this already, especially due to the positive reception of the slight performance increases that have resulted from the XB1S upclock. This is something that can be done late, it can even be implemented via a system update.

Well, just putting a cap on the speed of the GPU won't be enough. PS4 has 18CU GPU, while Neo has ~36CU GPU. Even at 800mhz, Neo GPU would be much faster.

I didn't mention the 18 extra compute units because that component is something that almost definitely regular ps4 games won't be able to take advantage of without a patch (as they've been designed to run with an 18CU GPU), the realistic scenario was ps4 games being able to use the extra power gained from mainly the upclocks for the GPU and CPU (as those 18CUs and 8 CPU cores are all still able to provide more power than the ps4).

No, Neo enters base mode where the game thinks its a normal PS4 and will run exactly like a normal PS4 unless developers make a Neo patch for it.

I don't think that's how it works but we will have to wait and see I guess.

With locked framerates I believe that will be the case.
