Star Wars: Rogue One Story Trailer

I know Edwards has a reputation of not being an actor's director, and it's surely got the spectacle, but everybody is super stilted in both trailers. You got this superb cast and it feels wasted. I need to hear Ben Mendelsohn talk. Refuse to believe you can make him turn in a poor performance.

If you care, RedLetterMedia's Plinkett reviews break down why the original Star Wars films are so good, in the course of showing how the prequels are so bad.

Basically, the originals nail the fundamentals of good storytelling and characterization. Couple that with truly revolutionary effects for the time, and the world class score, sound design, and art design (from the environment concepts to the physical props), and those movies totally earn their classic status. They are standard pulp fare done unusually well.

I own quite many editions of them and recently watched the Harmy's "original" restorations (which were wonderful). My biggest appreciation for the films comes indeed from the art/sound design and of course the sci-fi world they created. The writing and acting is super hammy though and some of the directing not up to par. As a cultural phenomena they are probably unmatched, but I just don't enjoy the writing and acting like I do in let's say, the Dollar Trilogy or many eastern action movies from that era.

Gareth somehow got a horrible performance out of Bryan Cranston.
I've already given up on expecting good performances.

I just want a good looking and fun star wars movie.

Lots of beautiful shots. Great action. Awesome trailer.

But the dialogue seemed weak (could just be the trailer) and the acting seemed stiff at times (could just be the trailer). Not to mention that the directing and writing credits don't fill me with any confidence.

Am I the only one not convinced this will be great? I hope it all comes together. There's obviously a ton of potential.

The Death Star display Darth Vader is looking at is very reminiscent of the old style of display used in A New Hope.

Wonder if this shot means he's overseeing construction.

There is basically nothing about this I don't like. The slight desaturated colouring, scope of cinematography and vistas, campy dialogue, entourage cast of misfits, the premise; everything. It's what I've been wanting from Star Wars for so long.

Seriously excited.

I don't know what's up with nu-SW and implausibly pretty actresses, but I'm swooning so hard right now.

Was this the role Tatiana Maslany was considered/auditioned for? Because this totally looks up to Maslany's alley.

Its sort of making me puke in my mouth seeing people in this thread throw JJ Abrams into the bushes....for Gareth Edwards...

I don't really understand all of the Abrams loathing either. It seemed like it reached critical mass with the Star Trek reboot. I could understand the lens flare criticisms, but not really anything else. Also, he's been one of the more prolific TV show creators/producers of some of the better shows starting in the early 2000s. Alias, Lost and Fringe were all really good. At their respective times, there really wasn't anything else as slick.

His TV efforts are considerably better than his movie ones. Most of his feature films are as pretty as they are hollow. Once you can look past the visuals, TFA is the definition of bland. Just like his take on ST.

It's a really weird shot. It makes him look super short for some reason.

Cool trailer but there were some very bad performances and dialogue in there...

But overall I'm excited!

And wow, that lead actress looks so freakin' cool!

Maybe it has allready mentioned in this topic. But the hair of Whitakers character has grown between the two trailers Scenes reshot? Or does he shave his head in the movie? (Or is some of it a flashback).

Like the trailer though. Great thing to wake up to. It doesn't have the same OOMPH for me as the TFA trailers had, but this is probably due to the way darker tone. I love how it really looks like a war movie.

Also, I found lot of the dialogue delivery in the TFA trailer being 'off' too. Chances are in the context of the film it all works a bit better...

I thought that was obvious, though those particular displays are in the rebel base in ANH if I remember correctly, so that shot might an aftermath of sorts.

Maybe it's Dark Helmet.

So that's why he wasn't in the Ghostbusters reboot! He was busy... with his spaceballs. #NotMyVader

Oh, I actually completely agree regarding The Force Awakens. I do not however believe all of his movies have been all that empty. I think both Super 8 and Star Trek are great. The rest though? I don't have a strong opinion one way or another.

Hopefully it's better than Disney supposedly thought when they ordered half of it to be reshot.

Unless there has been more recent, relevant news...

Nope

I see a tonal shift that I'm not too fond of. This trailer is much more upbeat than the first.

Whitaker said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that both hair styles are in the movie and that it is in some way reflective of his character. So either he starts with long hair and shaves it, or there's a time skip in the movie where it grows.

In terms of the actual trailer:

loved it. Love the war vibe that's going on here. Loved the Vader tease. The characters look cool.

The lines were a bit stilted, but I'll put that down to trailer editing for now. Loved the music.

guys, can we like ... not do that?

we get 2 female leads in a row, and some of you just creepily appreciate their looks?

more ontopic: Getting more into cosplaying recently - for as big of a cast they have, there's barely memorable outfits to be seen, which is a shame. (beyond Director Krennic's white attire, of course)
making Rey so easy, yet so recognizable to cosplay was a real stroke of genius. seeing 6 year old girls dressed up as Rey for Halloween does warm the heart. Gonna be a lot harder with Jyn Erso

Lol. Discussing the appearance of actors isn't creepy. It's not like they are saying anything gross. Let them have their fun. You can talk about 6 year olds if you want.

Thanks. Didn't buy that issue as their exclusive first coverage of TFA back in the days was so short.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Add to that the more mature and desperate tone reminiscent of ESB, plus it already feels like certain shots are going to become classics (at least 2-3 shots of star destroyers in that trailer gave me chills) and I like what I saw of the new droid's personality (feels like a cross between C3PO and HK47).

The best trailer for the movie yet (and much needed). I'm glad to see it continues to look like a very different Star Wars movie that's darker, grittier and with a feeling of the stakes definitely being high and the outcome not necessarily guaranteed even though we know roughly the outcome of this movie.

My only hope is that Vader's presence is minimal or, at best, they introduce him gradually as the movie progresses. Introducing him from the off wouldn't help the rest of the movie imo, and R1 isn't about Vader really anyway.

Can someone remind me of the timeline of when this takes place?

By major weapons test I imagine they mean a Death Star test on a planet, and that kind of goes against the whole destruction of Alderaan from A New Hope.

I'm going to enjoy the shit out of this movie, but maybe that'll be a point here?
