Just finished the first episode, really liking it. The cast is great and I love that old skool kung fu vibe it has too.

All of the above?

Watched the second episode. It's much slower as expected since the series is falling into place after the kinetic opener, but there are some pretty great scenes. The birds, Cadillac dancing, and the ending piece (which was totally spoiled by the trailers boo). I didn't care too much about the drama instigated between Shaolin and Zek though. But I'm sure that won't last for too long.

It's about the fall of disco, the rise of hiphop, and the state of the Bronx in the late 70s, which happens to be the melting pot of black culture in NYC. There's crime, there's teenage angst, there's opportunistic politics, there's corruption, and everything is tied together through the an undercurrent of music.

Late, but thank you. Giving this a watch today.

I love the intro/recap, I just wish the lip syncing wasn't so terrible. They should have just let Nas play older Zeke. Or at least let Daveed Diggs performs the rhymes. What's the point in casting a rapper if he's gonna just lip sync?

I'm 17 minutes in, and I reaaaaaally want to love this show.

Every second the director is changing the viewpoint to a scene (like as if it were cut by someone with ADD), the acting is all over the place (some of it horribly bad) and the lines these people say are off, even ones not meant to be cheesy. The effects are jarring too. Freeze frames that zoom in so blurry, and static shots of the city make me realize it was probably a budget concern... But even this could have been fixed with better editing.

I watched the little brief gang fight at the beginning and when Jimmy Smits arrives by car I thought for a second it was a guy holding up a piece of a car to make it look like a real one from his point of view. And the boy who flips him off in brown stripped shirt, his bad acting was just awkward, as was the boy holding the gun to another boys head. Yikes!

I'll continue to see if theres greatness to be had, but at the moment it's not impressive at all, which is a shame.

First hour I'm watching like man...there's a lot of terrible editing. By the end of that first episode I was hooked. I've always liked this era.

Also fuck you Mylene. My nigga is in love.

Yo! St. Mary's park!! Aw man played so much ball there growing up. So far pilot is solid except for that "gang" scene.

Im like a half hour into the first episode and it's all over the place. The show keeps jumping around and the transitions being random old footage is disorienting.

5 episodes in.. this show is amazing. Don't let that first episode fool you, the show definitely calms down once other directors step in.

Holy shit, I just finished watching the 6 episodes back to back and it was craazy good, loved it from the get go and every minute that followed. I knew it'd be good going in, having both the actor from Dope and The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete I had a feeling it was going to be great even, but even then It seriously blew my expectations away. I wish the 2nd part was made available from the get go, 6 episodes was just too little.

Nobody seems to be talking about this show, which makes me sad. :(

This :(

This also got evicerated by some critics. The criticisms are valid, but I hope that doesn't shun away potential viewers, since it really picks up later on.

The ride is over. If I didn't know there's a part 2 coming, I'd feel happy with what they gave. Excellent show. 2017 feels further away now.

This show proves that some bad acting and some bad lines, mixed with some questionable editing choices and varied visual styles can still make for a terribly entertaining show.

I was up till 3:30am last night because I had to finish it. I look forward to part 2 in 2017.

This was a cool show. Just watched all 6 in one day. It's got its fair share of problems, but it purely being just entertaining over shadows any of those.

Just started episode 6

This dinner scene is more interesting and has more to say about punk and hip hop than every second of Vinyl combined.

Finishing Episode 6

"Zeke, do you think we'll be able to handle all challenges of Part 2?"

lmao

But seriously, FUCKNG incredible series.

Who are you referring to?

Jaden at first seemed a little off, but then I realized that his character is just on a whole other mental plane (high as fuck) the entire show.

There were some attempts at being super emotional (i.e. crying) that just didn't look good. Like the little gang kid, Mylene and Zeke

But most of the bad acting was probably intentionally cheesy line delivery from main and background/supporting characters. the gang kid was especially bad on delivery.

But none of that soured my enjoyment of the show.

Awesome first episode. Onto ep two. Glad shows like this can exist but man if it weren't for Netflix this would never reach the light of day I feel like.

I didn't expect to like it cuz of luhrman but wow man that pilot was so damn good.

Reminds me a bit of Chiraq in that it takes real world culture and issues and folds them into this heavily exaggerated fantasy world. Really liked how they're treating the emergence of hip hop like some secret kung fu gang war.

I hope the rest of the episodes are like this. Would be really disappointing if they play it straight after this.

Question: Is this show suitable to watch as a family? Or is it very much strictly an adult show? Is there sex and/or graphic violence?

Depends on the family. It's not a kid's show, but I don't think there's much offensive stuff. The language is definitely R-rated, they drop f-bombs, n-words, etc. There's violence, there's sex, and there's lots of drugs. 3 episodes in I haven't seen any actual nudity or any graphic violence, so it depends on what the family is comfortable with.

Episode 6 will be problematic

Baz Luhrmann is an acquired taste. It looks like with Sense8 and The Get Down, Netflix is funding stuff no one else would, while proving why no one else would...

I liked it too, though I thought it was quite random at first. Then I read that Flash pretty much saw himself as a kung fu master of sort (hence, the "Grandmaster " moniker)

(Link also discusses how Baz Luhrmann deliberately opted not to treat this project as poverty porn).

This is really what I loved about the series though, hiw everyone has mythologized themselves and fantasized their surroundings, yet the intercutting of the 70s B-roll and the set pieces themselves ground these fantasies and still create a sense of grit.
The lack of pages for this is upsetting.

:((

Where's the hype, man?

I actually never really was too crazy about his stuff, but this is the most invigorating television show I've ever seen. Like, I had to get off the couch to groove out at several points in the series.

Exactly this, it's like a disco and hip-hop fairytale.

I'm half way through it and I enjoy it a lot it's stylized of course but I love the mythic take on Grandmaster Flash and Hip-Hop's origins.

I liked episode 3 and 4 a whole lot more than the second one. The characters really work for me, and I love seeing the very deliberate split between two camps of characters - the guys with Zeke, and the girls with Mylene. The contrast between the two characters and their inner circles is really well done. I loved how they used the backdrop of the blackout as a thematic turning point for all the characters. The meeting between Ed Koch and Cruz was really, really funny.

Going to be really sad when I run out of episodes and have to wait for Part 2. :(

I am watching the first ep now. Damn. It's like that 90's Romeo and Juliet but set in the Bronx and twice as good. I'm hooked.
