Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

I don't know what I'm missing from the first one as I never played it, but I'm loving the hell out of this. Just hit someone with the gravity shuriken then grappled them to me for a kill.

There's a lot to like. They just need to tweak. Really, that's about all they gotta do is change a few things.

People, including myself, are very passionate about the first game so our reaction is always doom and gloom lol

can't really say much about maps right now since we literally only are playing on 2 of them

like that isn't even a problem to discuss since we don't know what the others are looking like

Gaf you've disappointed me, I was expecting a shit show judging by a lot of impressions but I came out pretty impressed after playing for a few matches. While it has changed in a lot of respects from the TFall1, I still feel like its TFall at heart. The maps aren't the best that they've shown off, but the game still flows pretty well in my opinion. Pilot movement reduction is noticeable, but it seems like they want you to use the grapple to compensate problem is you don't et grapple by default. They should give you the option to shoot the titan core while on roady, or drop a grenade instead of just making you drop a nade every time you ride a titan. Hoping theyre listening to a lot of feedback, because I still think it has the potential to be special in its own right. Shouldve delayed until March 2017, because Im playing BF1 as soon as that drops barely a month later..

You can't imagine they put bad maps out for us to test though, especially given the harm negative impressions could do to day 1 sales.

just played my first session on ps4 (so i didn't play original game) on pilot vs. pilot and i came away rather impressed. the shooting feels good, i'm digging the high damage guns do and it's fun just going around sliding and grappling and wall-running. going to try and get in a titan next

The issue is if the two current maps are communicating an overall design philosophy that extends to the rest. I mean, sure, I suppose it's possible that all of the other maps are similar to Angel City and whatever else was amazing from R1, but I would think that's a long shot at this point.

The two maps that were playable in R1 before release (Angel City and Fracture, IIRC), were both excellent at showcasing the movement possibilities offered by the mechanics. In R2, Homestead seems to have a vendetta against pilot mobility, and while Boomtown is better, it still doesn't have those long parkour lines that people loved from R1's maps. Not the best first impression.

I find the computer talking to you while in the Titan to be the fucking best thing.

"WARNING! You are engaging two enemy Titans!!"

I FUCKING SEE THAT!!!

I miss being able to shoot a Titan's core during a mount.

But now you can play basketball with the titan and your shiny grenades! Titans like basketball.

Titanfall 1 has some awesome voices, the default was cool but they added in some really cool extra AI's

You're right. Like, the chances of the rest of the maps being somehow radically different are slim to none. It's really the one thing that cant be changed at this point.

TTK, grunts, titan timer, speed all seem possible if the devs decide to not be so stubborn on their current direction

They basically rebooted the franchise so "new players will feel welcome". I wish the best for Respawn, but wish they didn't do this. I am always saddened when developers don't "trust" their own game.

"Rebooted" but kept the 2 in the title. That's beyond dumb. They literally could have shipped Titanfall 1 again but with a campaign and a new platform and gotten more sales. Don't understand this need to make new people feel welcome. Especially when it kicks out the other people who have already been sitting in the house.

Came into this with this being the front runner for my Multiplayer FPS purchase this year but after having played the Pre-Alpha test I'm left disappointed... Had never played the original so no idea how different this plays but it certainly isn't what I had expected or hoped for.

Titans don't feel particularly fun or rewarding to play with as they are quite immobile and it seems to come down to who can dump more damage into the other party when you face a enemy titan. The maps don't feel great either and probably play a big part in one of my main complaints; how stationary focused the gameplay feels... there are all these movement abilities but if you put them to use chances are you are quickly going to be shot down by someone peaking over the top of a roof somewhere.

Right now it feels like it's trying to hit some sort of middle ground and in doing so neither the Titan or Pilot combat feel great.

I am saddest about rodeo changes: In TF1 I specialized in killing Titans as pilot (mind games out of the wazoo haha) and now it's all canned.

Let's just hope and pray they make some huge changes for Fall. I love the studio and want them to succeed.

Do Titan's always appear on the map even if they don't cash?

Can people remind me of the fanboy anti-Titanfall names?

Like. Pfft, Titan? More like TitanASS

Thing is the ps4 and new current gen owners would enjoy Titanfall 1, there was no need to remake what already worked well just because you have new people playing.

Terrible decision.

Like genuinely super sad.... This was one of the few games I was looking forward to this fall. I know some people probably put their all their heart and soul into this thing, but y'all fucked up.

:(

Just played my first match and I feel the same. Haven't played enough to pin down what I dont like about it, but while playing it just feels dull.

Im not even sure i want to play a second match.

They have enough time for tweaks. Just do the tweaks necessary and the game will be great.

Has any dev ever made such a change in direction and then reverted back after the fans had an outcry? Time and time again, Ive seen the devs dragging the game to release, kicking and screaming.

Titanfall 2 seems to really encourage cod style play. Titanfall 1 really discouraged it.

Haha, it's a bit like that. Your Titan is on fire, you can't see anything through the hail of incoming projectiles, controller is vibrating from explosive impacts...

"ATTENTION! You are getting your arse handed to you! Advise git gud countermeasures immediately!"

I'm not seeing a massively positive reaction from new player either. Seems like they might miss everyone with this one.

I only played a handful of matches of TF1, so I consider myself a new player and I am highly enjoying this.

I didn't like the bounty hunt game mode at first, but after a few hours of experience, I am into it. I really like the movement and traversal mechanics as well as the actual shooting.

I played a couple of rounds yesterday and I think it's meh mostly for the reasons everyone brought up in this thread. This was going to be a day 1 purchase for me, I loved TF1. I'll probably pick this up when it's cheap but I doubt it. It wasn't very fun to play.

Guys what happened with the different scoring types in TF1?Why are they missing in this game
Yeah, I noticed that as well. :(

All the different bonuses you got for a kill was very satisfying.

Yeah I can't say that's it's bad, but the sense of chaos and frantic energy from the first is completely gone. It's oddly quiet in comparison.

Ugh, just played my first match and this game is so off. What was an instant preorder is now waiting for it to be on ea access.

First the graphics are much worse. I'm only assuming because it's a download and it's to keep the file sizes smaller.

The audio is so muffled and oddly mixed, like being underwater. The sounds in TF1 were crisp and defined and added extra impact but made everything around you clear.

The maps are messy with loads of extra unneeded details. Whilst the originals maps felt a bit boxy they suited the wall running of the maps and made areas defined.

No one ever camped in titanfall, it was suicide to camp as you'd be found instantly but in this game all you see is campers as the tactical abilities have been reduced to pointless add ons. The sonar knife being the biggest issue. Even hard point is made for camping by making you sit in areas amount them up.

Lets take for example Windows. In the original any building you could go inside was either a room with 2 door ways either end for you to run through or had large windows in it to shoot from but it was obvious where you was. Most building had no Windows or little in way of internal access.

This has Windows in most buildings, little ledges made for sniping from and rooms that connect either in multiple ways (vents, Windows and doors) or tiny Windows to again snipe from.

In fact the maps don't help where as before you'd go from point to point these maps are almost rectangular in shape where by if you don't capture the centre point you can't capture the one beyond it as that's where the other team spawn.

The UI has lost all of its distinction for something that looks a bit ugly and confusing too.

Lets talk about the Titans too or lack there of. Most games I have zero to play with despite getting kills. Those that do appear are quickly dispatched as a rodeo is now instant death with little to combat it. The pilot weapons to take down Titans are pathetic. One weapon fires a single round that does little damage if it hits and takes ages to reload. By which point you are dead. Where's the AI too? They were to allow for larger maps and so you've always got something to attack. It also meant if you was poor at killing you could still help your team in other ways.

Why do players have health bars now? A couple of bullets kills players any ways.

How they managed to mess this up is beyond me. It really does feel like Cod AW where they saw a preview of titanfall, decided to copy it's ideas based off a couple of paragraphs and screen grabs and hope that'd do where as Titan fall felt totally unique in how it played.

The original really felt like the last level of Halo, constant running whilst everything explodes around you as you call in Titans. It was fun and action packed with tactics. This is a slow tactical shooter that allows you to go on roofs sometimes or hide in Windows. All ou had to do Respawn was add a single player, some new maps and ps4 support. Not copy advance warfare and make everything worse. It's pretty telling all the feedback over various forums says the same thing. They ruined what made the original great.

Just a dirty grab from my stream archive yesterday, you can still go to places with the slide/jump combo, although you definitely needs an elite or scuf to do this efficiently.

Also notice how the speed is painfully slow without Stim. It wasn't like this in TTF1 at all.
OMG i've mastered slide and i am A MINI GOD out there in pilot v pilot. Averaging 40+ kills a match and that's with flying around the map, no camping.

But yes you definitely need an elite or scuf for this.

Man Respawn is so close to perfection with pilot play, it just needs tweaks!!!

Regarding camping: Im seeing lots of people just stand on rooftops and do decent.

I think the issue is really a lack of grunts. Grunts promoted a lot of movement. Without them, people are better off camping for kills.

And by camping, I dont mean just staying in a corner, but just staying grounded and not moving around

My biggest complaint is so minor about this game but luckily it could be patched in. It's Titan aesthetic customization. I remember cod becoming pretty stale and then all of a sudden you could customize your body, face mask, tag, gun color and tag, and just about everything. It would be fucking awesome if we could customize Titans with different colors, stripes, tags and whatever.

The first game was a fucking JOKE with the customization they offered. They let you pick a small tag THAT YOU COULDNT EVEN SEE. It was fucking minuscule. That's why everyone kept asking for aesthetic customization and that's why people are so mad that they changed everything but the customization features.

I just don't understand the choices behind the design philosophy of this game. They're so baffling.

And hearing people say that pilot movement is fine- to "just use the slide and grappling hook!" Further proves how OP the hook is compared to the other abilities. They should have given all pilots hooks if they were going to destroy movement like they have.

Yeah, I'm done with the game unless they make some drastic changes. I never cared much for slow, campy shooters like CS, COD, BF etc. I spent years with TFC and Natural Selection. Then finally with TF1 we had a new game that was designed around movement and speed. And they ruined everything great about it with a slow, campy TF2. Because there isn't enough of those around...

Such a bummer.

I'm enjoying Bounty Hunt mode quite a bit. Not sure why people are hating it.
I think it's more that it's a terrible replacement for Attrition, which was a simple but really fun mode.

But I think changing everything to be a killstreak reward is probably the biggest turn off by far.
