Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Realistically, is there any chance that all the other concerns people have raised in this thread will be at least considered before release? Or is it too late for that?

The first Titanfall was already a great game even before any public testing.

They can fix things like the Titan drop rate and adjust the movement but don't expect to see more AI soldiers in the game. Titanfall 2 being multi-platform probably means that they no longer have access to Microsoft's cloud server resource. They had to design this game without the additional AI.

Then there are a lot of bad game design decisions which they can still change, but sometimes the developers are too stubborn to do that until it is too late. These bad design choices are quite common when the developers want to "balance" something or make the game easier for the new players which rarely leads to a better game.

Why the fuck would the make maps where you can't take advantage of any of the parkour elements? There's all these interiors that are so small and dinky inside where you can't do shit except be an awful camper.

I am flabbergasted playing this game. Words cannot express my dissapointment, I mean they had a SURE thing. It would have been so easy to double down on what made the first game special and great. I don't get it.

Maybe the real team made the singleplayer and the multiplayer was outsourced to LJN.

Guys what happened with the different scoring types in TF1?Why are they missing in this game?

Yeah the maps are awful. I doubt they put their worst maps in the alpha too so I don't have much hope for the rest. Partly why I don't think they'll delay it because even if they fix everything else these maps aren't going to make the game very fun. By the time they fix everyone's issues and remake all the maps they'd probably already be half way through titanfall 3 development

Still hoping the rest of the maps are good but..

Thanks for replying. I'm not optimistic!

I think that all factored into XP to rank you up, well since they use merits now I guess that doesn't matter anymore so it's gone.

First game must not have sold to expectations and Respawn had to adjust to something more familiar since the franchise is going mass market on all platforms. Does seem strange though to make a sequel that doesn't appeal to the people who liked the first game. I'm super bummed about this too. This was one of my more anticipated sequels to play but it feels like a prequel to the first game in terms of mechanics.

Experience is gone from TTF2 so there is no scoring whatsoever. Leveling up now uses a new mechanic called "merits", which you gain from doing various things in game, such as finishing a match, winning a match, leveling up a weapon or Titan.

And this is why you have an alpha a year before the end of production like halo 5 and gear 4. So you don't make every single mistake you can possibly make. Many others have put up good lists of the problems with this game, so i'm not going to redo that. Sorry to those at respawn who put their hearts and souls into this game, but i can't figure out the reasoning behind almost any decision. This game feels very much like another team worked on it, but unlike, for example, halo 4 or 5 from 343 everything was done wrong.

If we go back to titanfall 1 even when the last dlc maps were coming out there was an even larger focus on traversal. One of the maps was a digital world that was basically entirely running platforms. And in this game we have a level that is almost entirely devoid of wall running areas and instead is a long distance hunt.

What is more, the early promotional footage of titanfall 1 used the getting into the titan animation constantly. Why? Because it was awesome technically and showed the scale of the titans. The dropping animation was also heavily feature. In this game...we get super quick dropping animations devoid of all weight, the pilot entrance to the titan is in 3rd person for some reason, and all of the titans seem to have lost their signature feel and just look like generic mecha.

The complete destruction of what made the mechs feel so good and unique is the absolute worst thing about this sequel.

So their new server system still uses Azure as well as a few other cloud compute services. After playing and seeing how dumb AI controlled Titans are and the lack of grunts at all in hardpoint makes me think either the build for the technical test just got some of the AI features, though all shitty, or since it is no longer PC and Xbox only, they had to scale back what was being done with Azure to be able to make it work across multiple cloud services.

Having not played the original Titanfall and obvious mech fan, I was excited to try out 2.

Sadly this is probably the most boring/bland multiplayer shooter I've played in years, Bounty Hunt is a complete dud. So far this looks like this is an easy pass up for me this fall.

Never ran into connection or lag problems though.

The first sold 7 million. If that's not meeting expectations then lol

How do you play with a friend? I made sure we are in the same network and same data center but the invite friends button does nothing and invites or joins through the Xbox ui doesn't work either

I liked using the G2A4, it was a fun weapon but I forget what perks I had on it to make it good for me.

Interesting 'bug' when the orange part of the score counter slowly counts down when you are not earning points, forcing you to keep the action up. Sounds like an intended thing to me.

My issue with the current method for earning a titan is that it's treated like a killstreak more then anything, the change in making it an score you have to reach instead of a timer you aid by doing stuff is huge difference in practice when on paper it sounds similar.

just going by what others said

It could be working as intended but yea the current philosophy of titan meters needs a bit of work. Making the whole special ability amped stuff more killstreak based I can see. The titan stuff shouldn't tho in a game where that is the most marketed feature.

The game also fell off a cliff playerbase wise after a month. That ain't something to be happy about.

When you search, there is an option to Invite Network. When you choose that and a game mode it will pop up on screen for your friend to join. The regular Invite Friends option isn't available right now.

ONCE YOU MASTER THE SLIDE INTO JUMP MECHANIC THE PILOT COMBAT IS FUCKING AMAZING

Let's just get that out of the way right now. Pilot play is wonderful as always. There's just a few tweaks they need to do to hit a home run here.
  • STIM NEEDS TO COME BACK FASTER LIKE TITANFALL 1, AND IMMEDIATELY BE AVAILABLE AFTER DEATH
  • NO MORE GLOWING PILOTS
  • MORE A.I ON THE MAP AND MAPS NEED TO BE MORE LIKE TITANFALL 1 WITH TONS OF PARKOUR ROUTES
  • HEALTH REGEN NEEDS TO BE A TIER 2 KIT OPTION OR HEALTH REGEN IN GENERAL NEEDS TO BE FASTER

Seriously, this is all they have to do to make pilot combat BETTER than Titanall 1. I have a feeling we haven't seen the parkour maps yet so that might not even be a problem. If they make stim more available, health regen faster (or give you the option for it in the second kit) , and prevent you from glowing like a goddamn christmas tree they nailed it.

So, lets calm down eh? These changes are easy. =D

One of the developers has already posted in here that this isn't the average beta or tech test, it really is an old build of the game that's far less finished than a build that's 2 months out. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt so far.

There's definitely a lot of changes I'd make but I'm still having a lot of fun (except it constantly seems to end at 5v2 with me always being on the team with 2. Ugh)

Like genuinely super sad.... This was one of the few games I was looking forward to this fall. I know some people probably put their all their heart and soul into this thing, but y'all fucked up.

:(

Pilot changes are the least of this games problems

Agreed :(

Pilot changes are the least of this games problems
Well i'm just talking about pilot play here. The game mode options are easy to fix as well. A lot of the problems are easy to fix actually (if the map designs are not like these two, because if they are then yeah there's bigger problems)

I refrained from mentioning TItan combat because we havent' seen the other titans, and we don't know what other options we are getting with the titans in terms of customizations.

ok, what exactly do you disagree with?

Pretty disappointed with this game as a big fan of the original Titanfall and one of its big defenders on this site leading up to its launch (not that it needed defending, the game was great). I feel like a lot of my issues are exacerbated by my inability to play faster paced FPS with a controller (especially the PS4 controller) but I really disliked the movement speed changes and certain options being relegated to the perk system. The maps in the beta were terrible for showcasing and taking advantage of the movement options but again, maybe that's because I'm not as good/comfortable using a controller for this type of game so I didn't really try to utilize the movement options when I should have been. Everyone seems to hate Bounty Hunt but I think it's actually pretty fun!

I really want to try another build of this with better maps and on PC.

I don't think they toned down the AI for the tech test. It is more likely that they made the game less intensive for the servers in order to save costs that come from using Azure, Amazon and the other cloud services. The use the cloud servers for the AI soldiers and titans was one of the key selling points of the first game. There is no feature like this mentioned on the Titanfall 2 website.

It is a shame because the first game had the best dedicated server support I have seen in a console game and the maps really benefited from the full use of Microsoft's cloud resource.

I agree. People who are complaining about Pilot speed must not be sliding. I'm cruising around these maps with the slide, sprint, and wall running abilities.

The actual take away is that there is less verticality and parkor elements in general. In TF1 when you could wall run and keep wall running higher and higher it felt fast. The speed was there. With less virtual areas and wide open locations and narrow tunnels, all that feels lost.

Crossing fingers this all takes a proper turn with their inhouse builds.

these impressions are really disappointing,

cant believe some of the changes theyve made to this game. the first game was so good. it really sounds like they're making the game worse...

The game in its current state is objectively worse in almost every conceivable way.

Like genuinely super sad.... This was one of the few games I was looking forward to this fall. I know some people probably put their all their heart and soul into this thing, but y'all fucked up.

:(

EA just said they're jumping on the remaster train. Maybe we can get a console Titanfall re-release that doesn't run like trash. I love the XBone version, but it's am abomination between the resolution, FPS, and screen tearing.

Wow you guys..

I was sort of hyped after playing last night, but all of you have made me realized that this beta isn't really that "good" to begin with...

Hmmm I am trying to stay Positive.....

So you think they made this build and have since fundamentally changed the game? Absolutely not. This is what the game plays like. It's just buggier.

This game needs a delay to next spring. It will crash and burn hard against BF1 and even harder against Call of Duty. It was never going to beat them, but the goal was to take sales from CoD. It's not really going to do that at the moment.

Damn, some merciless fan feedback here. Sounds like they really homogenized out a lot of Titanfall's unique components. Not great....

All stuff about performance and graphics. Nothing about gameplay. So you are missing the point here.
While it goes on to talk about performance, this part is still very important all around:

As was stated, this build is off an old branch of code and was made specifically to test our new server hosting system with Multiplay, Networks infrastructure, matchmaking, etc. This is not a new-school style "beta", aka demo, of a finished product - this a the real deal pre-alpha; bugs and all. I think I branched off our main dev line about 8 weeks ago. At this stage of development that is a huge amount of time, not to mention the time we have left before ship.
So yeah, gameplay-wise I can't see a lot of big changes. But we're still missing a lot of the finesse and small details that can really put a bow on this thing. And I'm going to have some faith that a lot of it was held back because their main intent for this was to test the servers.

Wow you guys..

Hey, if you liked it then keep playing. Don't let anyone else sway your opinion. I've still only had time to play 2 games, but I'm about to jump back in today to really nail down my opinion. Honestly, I'm on the fence and all the negative opinions, even my own complaining, I won't let sway me from the fact I was having some fun yesterday.

Wait, stim isn't available upon respawn? That's it. That's fucking it.

ARGHHHHHHHHHH

I am more annoyed about this than... Literally anything else.

I'm not, as I've already said there's changes I'm disappointed in, I'm just also not willing to completely right off an unfinished and incomplete pizza slice of a game.

I agree. People who are complaining about Pilot speed must not be sliding. I'm cruising around these maps with the slide, sprint, and wall running abilities.

It's everything combined. It's not about people not using the slide function. It's the fact that momentum is shit compared to the first game. Wall running is much slower. Jumping is much slower. Maps are more open with less to run on. Titans are slow as fuck too and add to the fact that maps are open and it takes forever to even get your titan, this game is practically ruined and the more I talk about it the more frustrated I become. Definitely avoiding this game.

Disagree completely(on the movement). I went that route and it didn't make the game any more enjoyable. Not to mention, it's only one of the many problems. In regards to the maps, I doubt we're gonna see a grand departure from what's already being shown in terms of design tbh. The rest of your suggestions are fine.

Damn, some merciless fan feedback here. Sounds like they really homogenized out a lot of Titanfall's unique components. Not great....

If there were maps like Angel City or Rise in this beta I think the reception would be a lot better. The maps and gamemodes seem to be highlighting a lot of issues on top of also being issues themselves.

...this is only a few maps, and you're concluding about the final game?
The maps unfortunately is only one of the major problems with the game. In general, I feel it has strayed so far from the original vision of an all out Warzone of AI, Mechs and Pilots that it would be incredibly difficult to put a bandaid on at this point. There would have to be major restricting of gameplay design and mechanics in order for this to work in the way I was hoping it should.

Yeah, thats' one of my bigger issues that causes a lot of frustration but it's an easy fix.

Really? Try it in one of the few areas where there's walls and places to actually bounce off of. It's fast dude. I had to switch my slide from thumbstick to a lower paddle on the back of my elite. once i did that i was freaking flying.

if you're on xbox come join, i'll show you.
