Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Reinstalled Titanfall. Shit is still so damn good. Feels so much better. I think adding the grappling hook to Titanfall would be a nice addition though. Not sure why they had to change everything else along the way.

I honestly don't believe all the maps are going to be like this... worries about gimped traversal may be unfounded on the whole. There's no point to the parkour system otherwise and I doubt they're that foolish.

Just played my first two games of TF2. For context, I was a super late adopter of TF1. As in, I just bought it like 2 and a half months ago. I don't turn on my Xbox One very often (I mostly have it for Forza, back compat, and the occasional exclusive) but TF1 had an alluring quality that made me want to keep coming back to it. Here are my initial impressions (most of which I'm sure have been covered already):

-My biggest gripe (and probably the least fixable) is that the overall gameplay speed needs to be ratcheted up like 1.5x. Pilots move really sluggishly and take forever to climb up ledges. And with the TTK super low, the time it takes to lumber up a ledge is enough time for you to get killed 3 times over.
-Speaking of which, the TTK needs to be increased. Not a ton, but at least a little bit.
-Attrition needs to be brought back. I had a genuinely good time playing Bounty Hunt, but it's no replacement. Attrition is way better.
-The Call of Duty comparisons are valid in terms of gameplay speed, but I still think the movement in TF2 is still way better than in COD. It fails to live up to TF1, but it's not awful.
-The Homegrown map is terrible. It tries to separate pilots and Titans from each other, but in the process it makes it unsatisfying playing as either. I have no idea who could've thought that map design was a good idea.
-Boomtown, on the other hand, is a solid map.
-No burn cards. That needs to be brought back.
-I agree with the sentiments that Titanfall should be timer based, not point based. Not much else to add here.
-I don't know, I'm actually kind of enjoying the game despite the critiques though. I still occasionally play and enjoy Call of Duty, so maybe that has something to do with it. I'm liking the game so far, but there are definitely aspects that could be better.

TL;DR - Gameplay may not be up to snuff with its predecessor, but I'm still finding it enjoyable.

I can see them adjusting movement to be closer to TF1 but level design? I just dont see it happening.

I expect minor tweaks to come from this beta (spawn points, TTK, Titan drop rate, etc), but as far as map design/layout and core game play, I just don't see them reworking any of it, as the game releases here in the US in nine weeks.

Like it or not, this is Titanfall 2.

Sorry to offend your sensibilities, but I find it comical that they are trying to pass this off as nothing but a "stress test". Do you believe for one moment that since the completion of this "alpha build", which is apparently eight weeks old, not one of the developers play tested it and said..."gee, the Titans aren't dropping fast enough..."

The fact of the matter is that I hope that they make tweaks to the game play, because unless things change nest weekend, I know of four preorders that are going to be cancelled. Sadly, aside from a few minor tweaks, I fear that this is the game.

Edit:
Just to add to what I said above, I saw this was just tweet was just posted
Jon Shiring:
@FateIsAlex the design team is listening to all kinds of feedback, and we’ll be making changes based on that.

Don't lie to us, and tell us this is nothing more than a stress test, or use the words "alpha build" as an excuse for what we are seeing. Call it exactly what it is.

As someone who's actually a software developer who works on massive projects used by tens or hundreds of millions of people, "the fact of the matter" is that you genuinely can't figure everything out (sometimes even basic things which are obvious in retrospect) until you have people out there in the world actually playing it.

You're accusing them of "lying" because they made some minor gameplay tweaks. It's just ridiculous.

My impressions from gamescom are confirmed. I still think this is vastly better than TF1 in every regard.

Was never suuuuuper deep into TF1, but I "prestiged" at least twice.

Really, really dig TF2.

Also, I think I played a map at gamescom that is not in the beta. Not sure though.

Pretty much same thoughts here. Wasn't. A massive fan of oroginal but prestiged and played for about 40 hours. This looks and feels better. Pilots actually have a bit of weight now. Miss jumping on enemy titans but at least anti titan weapons work better on this one to make up for it. I had fun in my 5 or so matches and feel I've seen enough of it to k ow I am gonna buy it. Sp campaign is icing on the cake.

Agree.

Why would they put their worst 2 maps in a beta/alpha/tech test whatever they want to call it? They'll be wanting to make a good impression and put in maps they think are good (Angel City from TF1, Combine from BO3, etc..). With a beta you usually get the best of the best.

Maybe you're right & I hope you are that the other maps are better but I'm expecting the worst sadly.. At least that way I won't be disappointed, i've had enough disappointment to last a life time already :(

I'm sure two months is enough time to change things such as timers and other stuff but I doubt they're gonna go in and remake the maps or overhaul the movement system (my biggest gripe).

I don't even know what it is, from the moment your player jumps out of the dropshops at the beginning it felt wonky to me, just didn't have that smoothness and responsiveness that could immediately be felt in TF1.

I hate to say it but I just cancelled my preorder. Bummer because I was really excited for this, more than any game releasing this year. I know the devs are listening to feedback and making changes but that's not enough to fix the core gameplay issues. Until the movement system gets overhauled, I'm out. Gonna fire up Titanfall 1 for a few matches for old times sake.

DS4 broken, ended up playing this test with my phone, sucked ass but lol i managed to get a kill ( melee kill ) using touchscreen controls hahahahaha

Is there a community of Titanfall on 360? I was going to wait until Titanfall 2 or when I get a X1 for Titanfall 1. However, I'm not sure if the 360 version would give you that Titanfall experience like on X1 and PC.

I'll buy this game if they add:
- Titan build time
- AI
- Classic movement (+slide)
- Fix the HuD to something more akin to the original game
- Design game modes to promote mobility
- Bring back classic rodeoing (with the option to steal the core, which would eject you from the Titan)
- Allow full customization of Titans, including choosing your core ability (Edit: or make mixable sets, for example, "Scorch" can be combined with an Atlas chassis)
- No kill streak like functions, make boosts time based as well
- Make all future free maps with the same design philosophy as the first game
- Bring back classic maps (like Angel City) in addition to the planned DLC season (outsource it or do it yourself)
- Rebalance Stim
- Make "all first person" an option
- Bring back exciting music for multiplayer

While I'd like to have them fix existing maps (like Homestead), I think that's too much to ask unless EA is willing to delay the game until March 2017. This game has so much potential to be amazing and I would hate to see it go to waste in an attempt to cater to the CoD market. Let Call of Duty be Call of Duty and Titanfall be Titanfall, no need to cross the streams.

I remember hearing really positive impressions for the 360 port. It wasn't as good as the PC/XB1 version but it wasn't severely gimped or anything.

Also, bring back the awesome presentation

I assume this doesn't exist because it's pre alpha, but the npc that tells you your titan is ready was cool

Not a fan of pilot vs pilot, reminds me too much of getting my arse handed to me in COD.
I was getting killed from everywhere.

It was basically the same game at 1040x600, 30-50 fps.

Have you come around on TF2 or back to Overwatch for that online shooter itch?

TF1 was a dream FPS (I didn't even mind the lack of content), damn shame TF2 hasn't clicked with me.

Ya, Titanfall was so far ahead of the game in its presentation. This feels more lonely.

As others have speculated, it definitely feels like like a loss stemming from the complete separation of singleplayer and multiplayer. But even outside of Campaign Multiplayer in Titanfall 1, the presentation there still trumped what's here (even in the Alpha).

I was hoping we could get the singleplayer campaign without sacrificing the hybrid presentation of the original, but it seems like that's not the case.

The faction you can choose to be (Apex Predators, 6-4, etc.) should be the announcer.

This feels more lonely.

Adding context and character to multiplayer brings so much immersion and atmosphere to the game. Really makes the battlefield feel more alive.

I played the Titanfall 2 Test until max level (10) and then went back to Overwatch.

Although Overwatch kind of sucks right now until Season 2 starts back up, anyway, so =/

Not understanding the complaints about TTK and speed of the game. Feels very fluid and fun. Loving it.

Because it was better in TF1. Map design doesn't help, but the quick TTK punishes players from getting out there and using the games movement systems, as you are just a big target to long range shooters who pick you off super quick in this. So players move slower, take cover more, play cautious, essentially not playing like Titanfall at all.

Sorry, minor things and bugs I can understand, but if during the course of development, if you cannot identify a major flaw in the mechanics of a game in which you control said game play, then there is a fundamental flaw in your operations. It's not like they didn't have a clue staring them in the face the entire time...the game is called Titan Fall.

Replayed titanfall 1 on xbox one and the difference at least me is huge..so more frantic action but also the movement etc. If it ain't broken, don't fix it and they didn't fix it they removed a lot more than i thought they would in titanfall 2..yeah it is a tech test but we can be critical about it since like me i never asked for it to remove stuff that what made the game great.

I really like battery stealing but the design is currently silly/backwards. Sounds like they cann fix it though

I cant wait for people to get good. I hate trashy teammates but it's not their fault the game didn't explain batteries

Giving your teammate a battery gives you insane meter for your own titan btw

Although Overwatch kind of sucks right now until Season 2 starts back up, anyway, so =/

I still can't believe there's downtime between seasons, it's a really dumb decision to not have the next season start right away or within a few days. Going back to Quick Play just doesn't feel as engaging but I digress.

The Antihype

Yeah, I'm currently playing TF1 rather than 2...

There's a full CTF lobby!
Yeah but no slide bro. no crazy superhero stim shit and wallhang? ewwww.

I dare say that the gunplay in Titanfall 2 is improved and actually better than Titanfall 1. With a few tweaks that i have repeated on here ad nauseam the pilot play could wreck Titanfall 1.

Not really.
You keep saying this as if you're authority. Would you care to provide a gamertag? vids of you in Titanfall 1?

Me too. I'm so so utterly devastated right now.

Chill. The changes will come. All will be well again. Have faith in those dudes from Respawn.

What changes do u expect them to make?

I honestly think they'll reconsider things like

  • stim replenishment.
  • Titan timer
  • game modes with a.i like the original
  • player models glowing like idiots
  • maps focused on parkour
  • first person view over third person
  • titan customization
  • momentum advantage for wall runs

Besides maps (if the other maps aren't different than what we see now), everything else is a reasonable and executable fix.

I dunno, I read a lot of the negative impressions and was pretty worried, almost ready to despise the game myself. I've played a few hours, and I will say the maps do seem more sparse, but not to the extent some people are saying. The jumps do seem nerfed a bit, but I can still pretty effortlessly never touch the ground on the maps moving from place to place. The idea of Titans being presets eventually won me over. Overall Im enjoying it a lot and still plan to get it when it comes out.

What aspects do you prefer of the second?

Also the guy saying TF1 is dated is ridiculous, that game still plays like a dream.

You forgot changing the speed, but this may not matter if the maps were designed better

It's probably too late for map changes.

Homestead is so shockingly awful. The B flag is hell

But yeah, if they add timers and grunts, Im likely on board. Unless the maps are like homestead

They made Titanfall after Modern Warfare 2.

True but when they have to make a sequel to an amazing game they have past form for shitting the bed (well if you dislike MW2 that is and I'm kinda counting the Modern Warfare games separate from COD1/2)

And in all honesty the people that were good at Titanfall 1 are still good at Titanfall 2, and dominate 99% of the population.

People that were bad at Titanfall 1 are still bad at Titanfall 2. There's not much difference here in terms of crazy skill gaps between the two groups.

So, when i see people like "you can just succeed running on the ground, you can just sit on a roof and dominate" chances are you were getting dominated by really fast parkour players in the first game that bunnyhopped all over you. That aspect of the argument needs to go away.

The speed is fine if the maps are smaller (and if they adjust stim replenishment) which i think they will be since most modes will focus on 5v5, most likely.

played some more, still not a fan of the changes but eh. I like the orange grass map much better than the other map. but they're both too open and then too crowded imo

feels good to be doing well on the score boards again though. titanfall 1 was my shit.

i do have a strong feeling this is gunna get delayed tho.
