Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

what baffles me more is... did they not enjoy playing their own game as much as we did?

at what point, while playing TF1, did they go "gee, this is just too much fun, let's change everything to make it less of that mmmk?".

yup.

TF1's open beta / tech test / etc. was pretty much exactly what we got at release, and the time windows were similar, no?

***also - why does everyone call it R1 and R2? is there some other game that already has taken the TF/TF1 abbreviation?

IIRC its the code name Respawn themselves call the games.

Also Team Fortress could count for the second question (though it would more be Team Fortress 2 than the original)

I hate it.

I hate everything about it.

It's not Titanfall. Titanfall was the best multiplayer shooter traversal system ever. Being in a titan was also really fun. Strafing, moving, and you felt really at risk... the shield would let you come back from the brink with your titan.

This game has:

1) Ruined traversal
2) Fucking awful maps
3) Titan's take too long to come out
4) Titan's are not nearly as fun to pilot
5) If your team loses the first Titan engagement in a match, you are gonna be fucked because they will have Titan's for half the match while you wait for yours to be ready to drop. Titan's are too hard to bring down without a Titan now. In TF1, I really felt like I could fuck a Titan's shit up.. the Titan was an advantage, but a good player against an iffy Titan Pilot would win 90% of the time.

Just, what the fuck. They went about as wrong as they could. The E3 trailers showed lots of awesome traversal and the game has very little.
There's always Overwatch. :)

honestly this is bullshit. I have 24 hours in total on titalfall 1 on pc. Last time I played was over 2 years ago, jumped back on today to compare to TF2 and it still the same old easy game. While I wasn't dominating as in 1st on the scoreboard, I was coming second or 3rd easily and that's after 2 years.

Going back 2 years it didn't take more than a few hours to consistently start winning. Obviously everyone learns at different speeds etc, but Titanfall isn't deep, it just gives you a lot of options.

oh i was definitely an exception with that, i hadn't played a shooter on PC in over six years as i had been a perpetual student of theatre with no money. [undergrad, bit of professional life, then graduate studies abroad].

as for your recent experience, the playerbase typically sucks pretty hard right now [at least on PC], with the exception of a handful of dedicated elites who are really awesome.

and as Cobalt rightly points out, winning doesn't mean you've mastered the ins and outs of the game.

after over 850 hours played, i'm still mastering new skills that some of my friends have had down for awhile now - just never feel like i stop learning in R1.

Yep, after 2000+ hours I'm currently still trying to nail down kraber play.

As a mech game this is awesome. I like running around and collecting batteries for better players and not focusing so much on getting kills. I still have a blast.

I'm on board.

48 pages of mostly criticism, wow, this is brutal. As a PC player I've only had videos to go off, but I can certainly see where the complaints are coming from. Although fun, this looks dialled down and rather pedestrian compared to the original. Most disappointing is the contrived and scripted rodeo mechanic. The suspense and anticipation created by the original's rodeo mechanic was a mini-game in its own right. Doing away with that seems nuts.

Emphasis on the word 'seems'. If there's one thing Titanfall taught me, it's to not judge the game until you've put the mileage in. As a Gen 10 player I don't think I fully appreciated the enormous depth and viability of certain tactical options until maybe Gen 8. Some viewed the challenges as a grind, but for me, mastering them was a revelation, and my appreciation for the game grew and grew. Respawn have already achieved legendary status in my eyes, and if the same bods are responsible for Titanfall 2 then I find it hard to believe they'd put out a dud. We owe them more respect and should at least wait until the retail version before making grand declarations of crapness.

Also, I think it's pretty apparent by now that Respawn had no intention of recreating the same game. As cathartic as it is to bitch about the things we miss, we need to move on from that now and discuss objectively what the game does right/wrong, rather than always viewing it through the prism of Titanfall 1. After so many pages discussing the same thing it doesn't do the us much credit.

FWIW, I've played alot of Blops 3 (Prestige 6) and just decided to play a few matches of it after about 20 or 30 consecutive TF2 matches. Blops 3 felt HORRIBLE in comparison. TF2 combat feels alot smoother and crisp all around.

He actually makes a valid point. At issue is *how* TF1's core loop/gunplay/movement mechanic plays so differently from CoD, which is simply objective truth due to the fact that wall running & Titan mechanics are unique and so well integrated and required for successful play.

As you noted, people learn at different rates, even in a game like CoD. The difference is the aforementioned core loop in TF1 has a much higher skill ceiling due to its unique elements whereas CoD is essentially a lowest common denominator shooter with very little/no verticality or unique movement options. Even in a game like TF1 some people will "get good" quicker than others, but there's a movement/gunplay/gameplay loop in TF1 that (obviously) doesn't even exist in CoD.

Put simply, I can't remember ever having a single "Wow!" moment in a CoD game when it comes to watching others playing. In contrast, even after 250 hours in TF1 I would regularly run into players doing shit that would make me go "Damn that was cool!" The nature of the TF1 movement system allows some amazing map traversal. Indeed, in order for players to truly be awesome at the game it *requires* players master the unique movement. You'll never be better than a middling TF1 player if you play like CoD.

Ya, that's the thing here, I'd still rather play R2 than pretty much any other online shooter out there right now other than Overwatch, it just doesn't reach the incredibly high (in my mind) bar that R1 set.

What I've played of this Test has been "good", but not even approaching the level of enjoyment I got out of the first game.

Half-tempted to boot up Origin right now and reinstall the first game like so many others are doing. I've done it in the past and been unable to find any games, but the servers might be more full now with renewed interest from this Test.

I miss the cluster bomb, rockets, big punch ability, etc.

I am actually downloading titanfall 1 to my laptop now (don't have my desktop at the moment)

I might be in denial having been pretty hyped for this game but I'm having a blast with this beta. I never dedicated a huge amount of time to the first one however, so the changes might seem less drastic to me than others in this thread.

Did the TTK get increased? Feels a lot better to me than it did yesterday. I'm finding myself taking hits and getting out of the way much more reliably.

Whelp, I take back the whole "TF1 feels better" comments. Jumped back on TF1 after maybe a year plus away. Shit is dated... Yikes! TF2 feels MUCH better. Damn... Rose tinted glasses.

Well, it appears that there is a flying Titan in the campaign trailer.

I bought the shotty. It's really cool, though objectively much less effective than the carbine (well, all the guns are).

Yeah, I can imagine the Shotgun is fun but on these maps not the best. I think I'll try the Grenadier.

The maps are too cramped for my taste. So you spend less time using the slick traversal and more time sitting on rooftops and such. It's my biggest complaint so far. Haven't gotten used to the Titans yet since they seem to come much slower than TF1. They definitely seem weaker so far

Welp the connection issues just killed any interest my friends had in this game. Tried to get them into it and they were starting to warm up to it but the connection issues just completely killed all of it. It's literally impossible to play with friends right now.

Played some more and I've changed my mind. Not buying this.
It looks nice and runs well and the grappling hook is fun and all but even with all these movement options you're still such an easy target which makes just running around a more viable option. Titans aren't very fun to control either, the game modes were kind of boring and Had too few players so the maps felt empty. Such a shame.

Homestead is the opposite of cramped... That's the problem with it.

Sadly, the Call of Duty Kiddies claim another one...

Words I never thought I'd say... "whelp, maybe I'll buy titanfall 2 for it's single player"

Homestead is the opposite of cramped... That's the problem with it.

The problem is distribution of map geo. There's a lot of empty space, but the areas where there is cover / viable parkour objects are very small. So it feels both too big and too small. Too big in those big empty grasslands, and too small in and around the few buildings that are on the map.

I can't really agree with a lot of the gameplay or speed related complaints. I just hope people still give the final a try and don't judge based on these 3 game modes and 2 maps.

The SMGs feel so good on hip fire and getting the drop on an opponent or running above and behind them while hosing them down feels really good, while at the same time I struggle to take out enemies that are at any distance or behind cover on a roof.

Also the stim that increases your health regen is really useful and helps get away from bad situations a lot.
