Clinton piles up research in preparation for debate, while Trump does what Trump does

Hillary Clinton's advisers are talking to Donald J. Trump's ghostwriter of “The Art of the Deal,” seeking insights about Mr. Trump’s deepest insecurities as they devise strategies to needle and undermine him in four weeks at the first presidential debate, the most anticipated in a generation.

Her team is also getting advice from psychology experts to help create a personality profile of Mr. Trump to gauge how he may respond to attacks and deal with a woman as his sole adversary on the debate stage.

They are undertaking a forensic-style analysis of Mr. Trump’s performances in the Republican primary debates, cataloging strengths and weaknesses as well as trigger points that caused him to lash out in less-than-presidential ways.

As Mrs. Clinton pores over this voluminous research with her debate team, most recently for several hours on Friday, and her aides continue searching for someone who can rattle her as a Trump stand-in during mock debates, Mr. Trump is taking the opposite tack. Though he spent hours with his debate team the last two Sundays, the sessions were more freewheeling than focused, and he can barely conceal his disdain for laborious and theatrical practice sessions.

“I believe you can prep too much for those things,” Mr. Trump said in an interview last week. “It can be dangerous. You can sound scripted or phony — like you’re trying to be someone you’re not.”

Long piece worth a read to see the stark contrast between the two (a huge pain to copy paste stuff on NYT anyways).

1 month away from the debate of the century.

Nerd vs. cool guy debates in high school.

Although typically the cool guy won by promising unlimited pizza day and no homework ever.

Still not sure if he'll even show up. He still has a decent chance of staying home and claiming his car broke down or something.

Or he could go full Twitch Chat and blare incomprehensible bullshit as justification for not showing up.

Okay seriously who's going to be watching the Falcons/Saints game instead of this? Pretty sure even people at Buffalo Wild Wings and other sports bars are going to be watching the debates. You could put this on pay per view and it would still be the most viewed television event in months.

"I know how to handle Hillary," he said.

Ben Ghazi emailz ben ghazi ben ghazi emails emails ben ghazi america ben ghazi barack hussein obama ben ghazi

BEN GHZAI

All he has to do to appease his base is just rotate "Emails!" and "She's Sick!". Why even bother waisting time?

I don't know if this will play in a debate. The health questions would definitely backfire, and while you can get some play about emails, putting it out there allows Clinton to rebut it how she wants. Those topics work with Trump supporters because they don't have anywhere there to rebut them in a typical campaign rally or on Breitbart. In a debate, where your opponent can shut those down, they won't play as well.

I think Trump will focus on Clinton sounding or seeming ingenuine. Trump may be a pants-on-fire liar, but because Clinton is a career politician who has been dogged repeatedly by scandals of confidence in her political career, that's the only angle Trump can play in a debate.

I think trump will try to seem like he's 'winging it' while Clinton will have prepared, methodical answers.

How would it not end up happening? Seems unlikely.

I'm probably mistaken, but wasn't there a lot of speculation about Trump most likely intending to back out of a debate with Clinton, knowing how much damage it would cause to his campaign? If anything, this story would seem to potentially back that
story up.

I haven't been following the run up to these debates too closely though, so if that train of thought is currently outdated, I apologise.

At least she speaks like a an actual politician, not like a deranged 70yo 5th grader with an extremely predictable speech pattern, Mr. Trump.

And it will make no difference to Trump. He'll just keep spamming those "talking points" while calling her Crooked Hillary.

I honestly think he is gonna try and bully her and the moderator like he did in the primaries.

If he tries to be soft spoken Trump, he will fail as well, as it will come off as phony and planned and it's not the Trump people are used to seeing.

The first debate will go down in history as the text book manual for how to carry out character assassination of a lesser candidate.

Trump will cancel the remaining debates and will isolate himself to his bedroom for the remainder of the campaign where he will cry incessantly.

The last time someone tried to bully Clinton in a debate they got their ass handed to them in the election. The general electorate isn't a big fan of bullies.

I'm scared he might be able to turn it around on her in the debates. He might throw he off completely somehow, or make her sound condescending.

My fantasy is that Trump completely snaps and calls her a cunt on live TV.
I want to know what the odds are for any sort of gendered insult, connotation, joke, etc. If he goes there, the race is beyond over - the gender gap cements itself into place.

I really don't know if he can help himself.

This is basically the equivalent of

All Trump will do is bring up Monica Lewinsky, Bill Clinton's trade deals, Benghazi, Huma/Weiner and deleted Emails.

I wouldn't be shocked if he has Monica appear at his rallies and make speeches about Bill's "pillow talk" where he pointed out Hillary's darkest secrets.

Or some other stupid tabloid-level shit.

Trump will approach it like a 12-year-old bully. Zero substance. 100% bluster.

Hillary needs to stay focused and not get baited. She has a tendency to overreact to some things, or underreact (aka "what difference does it make?"), and it makes her look bad. If she does eye-rolling or other emotive stuff, it'll look bad.

Haha, that quote from trump. He is hoping for a Rubio style mentdown. He knows it is his only chance.

I don't think he'll say bitch or cunt, but he'll probably try to bring up Monica Lewinsky. "If Crooked Hillary can't keep her marriage safe from outsiders, how can we trust her with America's borders?"

"I believe you can practice too much for something," said Trump, surprising absolutely no one. Though unstated, it was presumed he also was thinking, "I also believe you can study something too much, think too much, and try too hard. Honestly, I don't see why anyone ever puts in any effort, I never have and look where it got me!"

Given Lewinsky is now a prominent activist against cyberbullying, I doubt it highly.

Backing out of a debate usually causes more harm than not.

And don't forget - that the entire process is rigged. He's gonna rant about how everyone in the audience and the media is bought and so forth.
