I don't think they are afraid of lawsuits, as much as bad reviews of VR. They want VR to take off.

They don't want either bad reviews or bad publicity, or bad impressions. Constantly emptying your stomach in the wrong direction trying to play PSVR definitely would count as one of those.

As i said, some games are CPU bound, others are GPU bound, and some are both CPU AND GPU bound. Its hard to say for every title, but there are ones you can just tell in either case.

So then what is the problem with what i said again ?
For DC maybe they could let choose 60 fps or higher res .
As i said i don't expect it to work for every game .( truth is i don't expect any options at all lol )

Someone postet that on the German Playstation Facebookpage:

Anyone knows what that is? I know that PSX was an upgraded version of PS2.
But that thing in the picture looks more like a photo of a presentation? Will PS4 Neo be a "PSX", too?

(Sorry if it already got posted).

fake.
Sony Entertainment 2016... Nope
Symbols in wrong order.
™ after PSX would mean that Sony has recently filed a trademark for "PSX" checked TESS and Sony already has a PSX trademarked from back in 2011 but i think it was in regards to computer accessories...

down below where it lists all the trademarks but then lists SIE Europe doesn't make sense nor does "Also [logos] are trademarks of the same company." like what? no thats not how you word things.

Those games are rare because there are usually not many games that have large overhead gaps free at the end of development in terms of CPU or GPU utilization.

Games like the Bioshock series and Infamous second son, and Killzone Shadowfall for example, are games that are not generally taxing the CPU as much as they possibly could, and so when you unlock the 30fps cap via Vsynch, you get those 40+fps framerates.

The developer is simply allowing overhead they had after launch to be shown in the game. WHereas if the game was locked at 30, you would not see that overhead.

Still, that's not my point. its perfectly, technically possible to ship console games that offer a 720p/60fps or 1080p/30fps mode. (unless your engine works with a refreshrate that is graphics related, that would be kinda bad). Nioh is a recent example. I am more interested WHY we don't see that option in many games.

PS4 Neo > PS4 Ne-oh > PS4 Ne-o > PS4 Ne-ou > PS4 Ne-u > PS4 New > "New PS4."

I already have a love/hate view of the Neo thanks to many people screaming, "Neo will save this game!!!" It's annoying and will accelerate like crazy when it's actually revealed.

Nioh is a single game, and doesn't run at either 1080p or 60fps on either of the settings set.

Both options are compromised when they could have just had one, and spent more time optimizing the game itself for a specific target than accounting for whether or not the game would work partially with each setting.

That is the decision each developer thinks about and comes away feeling like its pointless.

FOr Nioh, they had to scale down the graphical settings to run above 30fps, and also have only a few enemies on screen at a time to actually facilitate those two options , something most devs aren't going to bother attempting during development.

Eh? It may not be locked, but Nioh definitely runs at 60fps on Action Mode. The difference between that and Movie Mode is instantly noticeable.

Got a bunch of requests yesterday for a white version of the PS4 Neo mockup I did (even though the source material is the black Slim photos, lol). Made one anyway:

Sony only mandates that for VR because anything below 60fps will make you physically sick and probably vomit out what you had for breakfast, and they don't want any lawsuits.

I know, but still, Sony could easily enforce a 60fps requirement for new games on Neo. I know it's not happening, I was just dreaming ;)
Maybe for the PS5 :D

I understand that. That Nioh's exceution might be a bit flawed, that is not the case. My point is that it's very possible to deliver console games with different performance profiles. That developers are not always allowed to, do not have time, do not want to, or whatever-other-reason, that does not make it an impossibility; it is a design decision that has very little to do with CPU or GPU overheads. Again, I am not saying that we will see these options any time soon on consoles, it always just mystified me that there are very few console games who do give those options. I am totally aware that more options means more development and/or QA, but crossplatform games are already designed to be scalable. My biggest hunch is that it is more of a policy thing.

Many people won't notice variable 60 if not pointed out to them if it doesn't drop all that much, i never did for Tomb Raider DE.

Maybe for the PS5 :D

Why would they? It would make as much sense as enforcing a rule that all games must be turn-based RPGs - instead the market decides what is and is not successful.

September...September...

Where art thou?
For my Bosom is wretched with anguish...
I long for just a droplet, a drip...
A touch...
That sweet, sweet nectar of leaks...

You know how this is the first time a mid-gen hardware upgrade refresh has happened like this? I think Sony should do something bold. Instead of just doing a traditional white or black console, they should make it either:
A. Chrome
B. Brushed aluminum
C. Available in several different colors like Gamecubes were.

The Neo is supposed to stand out, right?
If they just HAVE to make it a black console, then at least put the PS logo in full color over the top:

just let the man dream. he's not actually suggesting that's something they'll do

Harmless dreaming is totally encouraged. Dreaming that someday rules will limit other peoples' experiences, on the other hand? Not so much. People are still daydreaming about overturning my marriage so admittedly I'm a little hyper sensitive.

I know Neo is expected to use Polaris, but is there any chance the new Slim, if it's moving to 14nm, would also use the Polaris architecture with the same number of compute units and clock speeds? It would allow them to use less power. It could also mean they could use some bad Neo yields to make Slim GPUs, right?

I fully admit the above might be nonsense because I don't know very much about the differences between how PC GPUs and console GPUs are made apart from consoles being SoCs (whatever that means) and semi-custom.

There wasn't even any hint it was related to Neo, was there? I assumed they were just commenting on the Slim/NX leaks lately.

To be fair, they never actually said anything I can point to. There was just an image of a waterfall. People, inccluding me drew our own conclusions.
