If there's two sku's solely relating to the hard drive there should be no reason to not pick the smallest one if you already have an upgraded 2tb hard drive the stock PS4 is there? (apart from if it's coming with a SSD).

Just asking now as it's usually best to get pre-orders in the second they become available on the day of the conference.

The only obstacle to that would be if the HDD inside is either a different physical size which I don't think will be the case, or if the enclosure inside is for some reason incompatible with the drive you have which I don't think will be the case either.

You will likely have to deactivate PS4 with the drive in it first and wipe the drive before putting it in the new machine from what I hear on here though. I think some people have said that it causes some issues if you don't.... Possibly regarding licenses and DLC or something?

Thanks from the heads up, good to know :). I guess that means no one with be playing PT at 60 FPS lol.

Well, here's my question about that. Doesn't the new firmware on PS allow for some kind of file transfer system? If so, maybe there is a way you can transfer the files to a temp drive and then transfer them back? I don't know, but might be worth checking into.

Thats a point. I wouldnt want to lose that little gem.

Do we know yet if the leaked PS4 slim has had the die shrink to 14/16nm?

If it didn't i fail to see the point of the smaller redesign, as that would make the unit even louder and hotter by a decent margin.

I think its a safe bet to assume that a process node in the same vein of the XB1 S was implemented

The more I think about it the more I hope Sony reveals more of their plans moving forward with these new consoles. Rather than just announcing Neo/Slim and finishing, I hope they shed more light on where they will be 2-3 years down the line. How often do we expect a new console?

Pre 4.0 you can backup your hard drive to an external and restore it to another system. 4.0 brings the ability to transfer directly from one PS4 to the other.

Right. But, let's say you wanted to use that same drive you have in another unit, say, the Neo. Wouldn't you be able to transfer the contents to a USB 2.0 drive connected to PS4 now, then deactivate PS4 with drive in system, wipe drive, put in Neo, update drive, connect USB drive to PS4, transfer files to drive in Neo?

I want WipEout back, not sure I want VR though...definitely no rolling around for extra boost ;)

Same here... really hope WipEout comes back some day. I was thinking the other day, it would be so sick if they showed a new WipEout at the Neo showcase. RIP Studio Liverpool.

We already know some of this, because House explained a decent amount at E3 when he revealed the existence of the unit.

We know...they are not planning on 2 year style launches, so we can assume 3 years or more atleast.

He stated that rather than being a new generation, (which they still consider a thing), PS4 NEO will form the basis of Sony trying a different type of mid generation refresh for those looking into the market for more power than the base units.

And so we can see how slim and NEO occupy different parts of this PS4 ecosystem going forward.

Lol, remember when you could buy a console for $300-$600(looking at you PS3 fat) and have it last for around 6 years or so without another version hitting? (Sounds like one of those old people stories).

Guys just for my confirmation (because the last articles i can find are months old) all games here forward *will* still work on a regular PS4 model correct ?

Has there been any news or developer notes about how this will effect patching ? will developers focus on bringing the game up to specs on Neo and leave the base versions hanging at 20FPS etc ?

They are mandated to work in all cases, as per the documentation.

And with the 40+ million userbase(with many more to come considering the PS4 Slim will sell far more than NEO will), i sincerely doubt anybody is making games with NEO as the target anytime soon, leaving the original hardware to languish intentionally. By the time that would even matter, PS5 will be out and essentially leave both NEO and PS4 irrelevant.

yes the rumors and leaked docs say starting in October all games with have a Neo mode and a base mode.

IMHO I wouldnt count on base mode games running as well as Neo mode games, obviously will vary from dev to dev.

I'd also expect this same scenario Holiday 2017 with Scorpio and Xbox One games too

How many PS4 owners would have a Neo model, for the next 3 years?

I personally believe Neo would be lucky to have 20% penetration, more likely 15%.
(NeoGaf is an unusual group that would likely have a higher percentage Neo ownership than the general public.)

Remember that Neo isn't PS5. It isn't a new model that everyone had to upgrade to eventually. Neo is a premium PS4 that would, in about 3 years, be made obsolete by PS5. This means it is very unlikely that most existing PS4 owners would ever bother to upgrade, and upcoming Slim customers certainly won't.

Since we can safely predict most PS4 owners won't have a Neo, it means it would be suicide to neglect the base model and focus on the Neo for software development. You would be deliberately kneecapping your own game and restricting your own sales. Money is what matters, in the end.

I still believe.

Wipeout HD Fury VR. Just don't play it after a large meal.

I did notice that the Playroom VR menu screen (with all the robots in the gym, arcade, etc) has a Wipeout track running round it, with robots racing on it. Could this be a hint? Or Sony twisting the knife?

I think, just from a developer perspective, I'm not sure why a mandated requirement for 60FPS is a good thing at all. Or any other such requirements that aren't based in some sort requirement for player health and so on.

Developers having as few as possible arbitrary restrictions placed on them by manufacturers, the better it is for the industry and gamers is my thought process.

I beg to differ, ffxv is a prime example of this.
It has terrible IQ and terrible framerate.
Maybe you shouldn't mendate resolution, but framerate is a must. 15-30 fps gameplay is an insult on hardware which is uniform for everyone. They knew the console spec and yet they choose to ignore it with the poly ccount and shaders.

PS4's stock in Japan is almost at E, so that September 7th date needs to get here fast. Last week the PS4 sold 5k units in Japan, that's down from 17k the week before. They really need to get those slims out next week.

Is it not possible that we won't actually see the release of the "Neo" this year, and instead simply have the slim and then the Neo next year with more powerful specs to come inline with what Microsoft are proposing?

Yes I know about the leaked documents and about the suggestions that games released from a certain date need to have a "neo" mode, and about the tie in with the release of PS VR, but I'm still thinking that it's possible that we're not getting the Neo this side of Christmas.

In addition to checkerboard rendering, the leaked Sony docs refer to a "geometry rendering" method to increase resolution. Evidently they'd discussed that earlier, when first revealing Neo to developers. Is that the Valve-based solution?
That is a mystery right now. I'm curious as to what that is. My guess would be something that helps cut down on the cost of standard resolution rendering but I have no idea.

With the delay of GTSport I think it's in part to neo being 2017. They will launch together in a bundle.

We have gone over this. They wouldn't hold this conference before holidays season only to launch next year.

Realise date of one software doesn't and shouldn't dictate what you do with your hardware. Specially when that software is GT.

I've not read the whole thread so apologies if I've missed that.

So Sony have confirmed this meeting for the Neo yeah? As far as I was concerned nothing was concrete. It's simply a conference to discuss PlayStation. But obviously people are putting 2 + 2 and getting the answer they want to hear.

Yet you're posting as if it's a done deal and this is an official Sony Neo conference. We'll see on the 7th but I think the release this year is the slim, likely announced as available "now", and that's that.

We'll see though....

Nah, this thing will be sitting in warehouses as we speak from all accounts. It's made, set in stone. It will release this year, be a good premium alternative for new buyers and the hardcore current PS4 owners. The Slim will be cheaper, probably aggressively so and will make the most sales. Neo will be an improved PS4 that has a year head start on Scorpio and will be able to undercut Scorpio on price by a large margin by the time that console rolls around, which should be more than enough to keep most people in the Sony ecosystem until PS5 eventually releases around 2020 and outdoes Scorpio when it does as it should be timed nicely for quite drastic improvements in components that will be becoming available around that time.

Yes. The PS4 has always had this backup feature and I guarantee that you will be able to restore the OG PS4 backup to the Neo.

Playstation Meeting's are specifically to announce new hardware, and they wouldn't hold one to announce a slim model. That would be handled at a standard gaming convention. And according to the FoxConn worker that's been posting drawings of the Neo, it's already in mass production.

With the delay of GTSport I think it's in part to neo being 2017. They will launch together in a bundle.

I don't think Sony would ever be mental enough to tie in a hardware release to the reliability of one of their most unreliable (time-wise) developers! Ha.

It's Neo. They wouldn't hold a conference for slim. Vita 2 or PSP 3 is not a thing, no matter how much a very small group of people want it to be. For any other software related thing they wouldn't hold a special conference. In fact, they still are having pre-TGS and Asian conference for software like every year. They are fairly close to this conference too. So this has be Neo. Furthermore, announcing Neo so close to holiday and then not launch it this holiday would be considered a mistake of epic proportions. Specially when they are on record saying that they want Apple style announcement and launch.

So, Neo is coming and it is coming this year.

Right, there's plenty of games with FPS that dips into bad territory. But why should a minimum be mandated?

It's another obstacle all developers will have to run through (imagine the quality control required for minimum FPS) which really just ends up punishing all developers because of a few.

As opposed to maybe consumers just having some self control in regards to buying habits.

What makes you think it's the software causing the delay ? ;)

Because the devs were actually quoted saying as much. I'll see if I can find the link.

Edit: "However, as we approach our planned release date in November, we realize we need more time to perfect GT Sport, which we’ve already dedicated so much effort towards since announcing the title. We do not want to compromise the experience in any way. While we cannot confirm a new release date at this time, we are more committed than ever to making GT Sport the best Gran Turismo game to date."

Depending on when a Next PS box, which I'm not going to call 5 just yet for my own reasons would hit, if it is within say 3-4 years of launching an expensive "upgrade" version of PS4, if it indeed cannot play PS4 games, it will be interesting to see consumer reaction. If Neo cannot play the new box's games albeit possibly poorly, consumer reaction would be interesting from those that did buy one. I suppose it would be OK as long as cross gen games kept being produced for several years more.

Meh, it could just be the already existing and noted frame rate dips they're having. It could be they want to make sure it runs great on Neo. I don't personally think it is related to Neo's hardware launch.
