I am just hoping that the system allows for non-4K TV owners to have an upgraded 1080p experience graphically (AA, lighting, etc.) and not just the same one as OG PS4.

Er...it would be impossible to lock out visual effects rendered by the GPU just based on what TV you have.

Official announcement of what? I'm confused.

Sony never announced the event publicly. We just know about it because some invited press people told us.

Right.

Usually for these types of things, they'll have a public announcement with a PS Blog post and - if we're lucky - maybe a teaser video. It would be very out of character though if they say nothing publicly about the event before next week.

One of the slides from SDK leak mentioned just that. What devs could add for 1080p users [who ware vast majority now].

I know, but I have been worried that it's mainly focused on pushing that 4K visual and not using the extra power for 1080p users. Realistically, I doubt Sony would go that route, but I hope 1080 adopters are given some amazing looking games.

Ohhhhh ok. I totally forgot about that (I skimmed a lot of it). Thanks for the heads up!

Depending on when a Next PS box, which I'm not going to call 5 just yet for my own reasons would hit, if it is within say 3-4 years of launching an expensive "upgrade" version of PS4, if it indeed cannot play PS4 games, it will be interesting to see consumer reaction. If Neo cannot play the new box's games albeit possibly poorly, consumer reaction would be interesting from those that did buy one. I suppose it would be OK as long as cross gen games kept being produced for several years more.

Anyone who actually believe Neo could play PS5 games would only have themselves to blame. Sony will make it very clear that Neo is a PS4, just slightly better.

PS5 being able to play PS4 games is definitely a possibility. However, there will be VERY little reason to allow PS5 games to run on Neo. Because as I kept saying, Neo owners would always be a minority. No one would ever truly base their software decisions around such a limited number of consoles.

How would Neo owners be in a minority in comparison to PS5 owners when it launches?
Also what's the difference between a PS5 (with bc) and a PS4 Neo 2?

Yes. The PS4 has always had this backup feature and I guarantee that you will be able to restore the OG PS4 backup to the Neo.

PS4 had the ability to transfer saves, not complete games and such. That's new to firmware 4.0

I could be sworn I transfered PT last year when I upgraded to a 1tb HDD. It's always been an option to transfer games.

Not always. Version 2.50 is when they started to allow you to back up (games, saves, settings, etc.) to a 3rd hard drive and restore to another system/hard drive.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015...te-2-50-available-tomorrow-features-detailed/
Back-Up and Restore HDD to USB — Back-up and restore your hard disc drive data associated with users on your PS4, including settings, saved data, screenshots and video clips as well as games, patches and download data, to and from an external USB drive.

I'm really excited for the event.

Personally, I'm glad the Neo wasn't leaked. It's always exciting to hear the new announcements.

With the recent rumors that the PS4 slim doesn't support 4K or HDR and looks to come with only a 500GB drive, when compared to the Xbox One S features, my guess is that their strategy is to try and push people to buy the more expensive Neo to get those features. I haven't read if the price of the slim was confirmed yet but I think for this strategy to work, Sony would have to price the slim very, very competitively, cheaper then the Xbox One S.

And though probably not realistic at all, I hope for another handheld that works more cohesively with the PS4; something akin to what the NX is about.

Vast majority of users will be vanilla PS4 in comparison to Neo.
Think about it, we have a likely $250 PS4 slim coming in as the base SKU, that thing will move insane units on the global level.

Neo by contrast is very much a premium enthusiast SKU.
Also Sony has hinted at still having traditional "generations" per say, so a Neo 2 along with a PS5 wouldn't make all that much sense when games are developed exclusively for PS5 (which has bc)

4.0 has that functionality. I'll use it when I get a Neo.

That's my plan, but I do have a concern about whether the source PS4 for the transfer remains useable. I want the same content on both my original PS4 and the Neo.

I'm sure there was something in the wording of the transfer utility in 4.0 which seemed to imply that you'd be deactivating and factory resetting the source machine.

Because PS4NEO has been developed from the start as a marginal iterative concept, based completely around the original PS4 using only marginally upclocked components of the original machine outside of the GPU.

PS5 likely will not have these shackles of being tied down to PS4 or NEO's development pipeline, will be allowed to have its own titles to take advantage of the hardware, will largely be significantly bigger a jump NEO to PS5 than PS4 to NEO(and a HUGE jump comparing PS4 to PS5), and also, will likely be the new standard Sony will push on people to upgrade toward.

NEO is an option, PS5 won't be to play the biggest and latest titles, even though i'm sure crossgen will still take place to some extent, and PS5 will have BC with PS4 and NEO titles. Of course that is just my prediction.

Yes I'm also expecting something like this.
Slim at 299$ initially because they need to firesale the old PS4 units, then it will be dropped to 250$ during the holiday season while the Neo will stay at the same price but with games included.
We'll see soon enough though, 1 week to go.

Not a fan of that price differential. Doesn't seem like the upgrade is that much.

Price is totally appropriate for the leaked specs.

Are there any rumors Rockstar will show something on the event?

Kinda. There was someone on Twitter that some GTA fans and leakers said was a "Sony insider" and who hinted that Rockstar would be at the Playstation Meeting but I don't really know about that one. lol

Then the guys on Kinda Funny did a Gamescast talking about predictions for the meeting, went with Red Dead being a stinger given it's Rockstar and it's in New York which is there backyard since the main HQ is there. Then Colin brought up that while he shrugged off the reddit E3 rumor that Red Dead was supposed to be the stinger at Sony's conference but was pulled due to Orlando, he did hear the same rumor from people "absolutely fucking trusts". Colin also was cool enough to post in the PS, I Love You thread to clarify:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=213436437&postcount=3734
Just to be clear on this, I'm not in any way, shape, or form substantiating the rumors. I have no primary source(s) here (and, frankly, I haven't been a journalist since 2014, and I'm not really poking and prodding around for details these days... much of the stuff I talk about on the shows, Tweet about, and the like comes to me). I'm simply reiterating that I've heard this same rumor that was originally floating around on (I think) Reddit through a filter that makes me trust that information more, when originally, I was skeptical, if not completely dismissive.

It's important to note that Sony itself (via Adam Boyes back in June, I believe) said that the rumors were false, and that the show was locked. But with the timing of the conference, the Orlando Shooting, and the obvious strangeness of the placement and cadence of the Days Gone stinger, it's crystal clear why skepticism is abound. I'm pretty sure we'll never actually know, but it's fun to talk about, especially with the Neo announcement forthcoming.

Hope that puts things into perspective. Have a good weekend! -Colin

So that's why some of us have "perked" up a little and mention Rockstar and Red Dead for the meeting. There's also some going further to explain that Take Two has another investors call in November, likely on the 5th, and for the last 2 calls Zelnick has basically used the same line regarding Rockstar's development: "They're hard at work on exciting projects that will be revealed soon". Is Zelnick going to want to repeat the same thing for a third time in a row and when all of Take Two's current slate and releases ends in October? lol

Absolutely, really excited to see what they have done with the Neo. But a shame the Slim got leaked and broke street date in some places so early.

Seems like if that's true, they kept the leaked specs. That's fine as long as they either downclock the CPU to 2.0 or upclock it to 2.2/2.4. I just can't stand uneven values. 2.1 is such a pain.

Would be nice, but i really hope that they would lower the slim to 249 and not 299. You can have a 299 model with a 1TB HDD and 249 with 500GB.

I didn't really pay too mention attention to the leaked Neo developer docs, but tbh, I think all we need to know about what to expect is in there.

Basically it sounds Sony expects the following from developers for their games on Neo:

1) To run at a higher resolution when connected to a 4K TV (minimum 1800p it seems - although whether this is a suggested minimum or a hard minimum is difficult to tell. If you can't beat that res, they say to contact them).

2) To additionally - but seemingly optionally - run with enhancements when connected to a 1080p TV. That may be some mix of IQ improvements, framerate improvements, enhanced effects etc.

So the strategies Sony expects from devs seems to be to target different TV owners with different improvements.

It doesn't seem like a game HAS to target a 1080p TV with specific enhancements - framerate would be a freebie for GPU limited games - but I think most exemplary games that Sony puts out will have two specific paths for the two target TV types.

Some examples might be:

'4K'/30 on a 4K TV
1080p/60 on a 1080p TV

or

'4K'/30 on a 4K TV
1080p/30 with enhanced effects on a 1080p TV

or

just '4K'/30 on a 4K TV
no specific enhancement on a 1080p TV (excepting a smoother framerate perhaps, as a freebie if the game is GPU limited)

In effect the Neo user might have the kind of choice over how the game runs that some have asked for on consoles for a while - higher resolution vs higher framerate/per-pixel fidelity/whatever. But the enhancements on offer may vary from game to game, outside of the higher resolution mode for 4K TVs.

I think that would be a good catch-all strategy, and I reckon what they're saying to devs in those presentations is more or less how they'll communicate the benefits to users. They can and will market it to 4K TV owners who want that across-the-board resolution bump in games, while offering additional options for 1080p owners.

7 days to go you sexy beasts. They are gonna fumble sooo fucking hard with this announcement, I can feel it. Excited as hell, nevertheless.

As someone who plays on a monitor (currently 27' 1080p, VA) - what are best options? I know monitors come with varying native resolutions but I dont' think they upscale well.

Not sure what you mean... Neo here will take the internal res and scaling it up to 4K for output. You won't be switching between different output resolutions depending on the dev's target. So you'd just want a 4K TV if you want to enjoy that enhancement path.

Because the devs were actually quoted saying as much. I'll see if I can find the link.

Edit: "However, as we approach our planned release date in November, we realize we need more time to perfect GT Sport, which we’ve already dedicated so much effort towards since announcing the title. We do not want to compromise the experience in any way. While we cannot confirm a new release date at this time, we are more committed than ever to making GT Sport the best Gran Turismo game to date."

I think you missed what 0racle was saying. He was suggesting GT's delay was caused by NEO's "new" launch. PD can't exactly go out there and say "GT delayed cause NEO march 2017".
