What's the alternative? Say nothing and let Sony take the premium console cake unchallenged?

They are grasping at straws. Announce Scorpio at E3 2017 with a launch shortly after. Ensure it is bigger and better than neo and blow our minds out if no where. It was their time to reorganize and come out with a rebrand/reorganize of the Xbox brand.

Now it looks like a "wait...me too " desperate attempt at the spotlight. Seems like panic mode still exists at MS.

Doesn't matter how much PS4 sold, Scorpio will get PC ultra setting "port" anyway.
Plus, if they don't announce Scorpio in advance, thing might be worse. That's why this is clever, they stop some fans from jumping into Neo and make Neo look less powerful. Two birds one stone. 3 birds if you count oneS

Microsoft can show as many Powerpoint presentations as they want. The truth is the NEO will be on show next week. All MS have come up with is a list of fictitious specs that may or may not be available more than a year down the line.
The NEO is almost here and any prospective console purchaser will surely be swayed by actually seeing something more powerful in the flesh rather than something that exists only in Microsoft's imagination.

Honestly I just don't understand peoples fascination with hitting 4K, I really hope the TV manufacturing industry head towards 21:9 next instead of 8K, consoles can look as pretty as they like, match PC max settings etc, but until they can output in 21:9 it's going to be big negative point for me.

Sony's play is/will be that Neo is good enough to see the PS4 generation through on higher def TVs, for maturing VR, for users who want a bit more polish at 1080p.

If it turns out Neo is 'good enough' for those goals, then mission accomplished. Coming this year is a good idea if the reality of Neo is 'good enough' to impress people in those contexts. Delaying for a year to have a slightly-to-somewhat better 'good enough' would be questionable. 2016 is 3 years after PS4's launch - that's chronologically exactly the likely mid-point of this gen which is a good point to inject a bit of extra wind into the sails technically IMO. Another year+ later would be getting into the tail-end of the generation.

I take you haven't seen a game running at 4K.

Everyone they stopped from buying a console before Scorpio release is a win, doesn't matter what fans or what console they owned.
Stop someone from buying a Neo, great win. Stop someone from buying a Xbox one S, still win after a year.

I think that was even said in an interview with Phil

But 6TF won't have the same impact in 2017, especially after Neo launch.
It will not blow our mind in 2017, games will not look that much different from Neo. It won't have the reception like they did at E3. We will be like "okay...that's it?"

Announce Scorpio at E3 this is a necessary move.

Lol

The Scorpio isn't interesting to me. I have a PC. By the time Scorpio releases, there will be at least 8TF for a 1170 and over 10TF for the 1180. Since their games come to PC, I don't see a reason to buy a Scorpio.

The Scorpio reveal was so bad.

And the worst part is, it kinda shows that maybe MS doesnt actually know how to reverse the trajectory of the downward trend of Xbox.

That they thought a talking heads concept video trying to address a singular issue (power) without much more was a good idea...

Yikes. It kinda told me they gave up on the larger market.

GAF is not the mainstream market though. I thought Scorpio and its "native 4k" had successfully become the newest buzzwords in the system wars at large? (genuinely curious here, I'm more of a PC gamer and don't really have my finger on the console pulse all that much)

They basically tried to rip off the PS 'conversations with creators' videos, whilst missing the things which made them videos successful.

Yeah, I've always wondered about the directions they are taking.

Mattrick-era X1: 'It will do everything!'

PS4 launches, is branded as a 'games first' machine, sells by the truckloads

Spencer-era X1: 'games are important! look at this expensive conceptual machine we might release in 12+ months! Also, the X1 will basically become Win-10-in-a-box because of UWP so you can play a bunch of X1 exclusive games on PC as well'

Ed Fries did a great interview about the OG Xbox era and why he left, because of company-wide interests conflicting with what he wanted to do with Xbox. Microsoft hasnt changed much in the past 10 years.

Yeh I wouldnt be surprised if MS was panicking, they have been very reactive this gen

I take you haven't seen a game running at 4K.

I have, and I rate 21:9 aspect ratio a lot higher for gaming, and for movies especially, a lot of people on my home forum have moved from 4K to 21:9 displays and have found it more immersive, 4K has just become the new target mantra for the tech industry at moment and a lot of consumers have just been caught up in the tidal wave, there are more important things than 4K that improve your gaming experience, ultra low input lag displays, higher refresh rates, and wider aspect ratios etc.

I've been an avid console gamer all my life since the Atari 2600 days, I'll be buying the Neo day one, but consoles aren't just chasing 'PC max graphics settings' now, in my opinion the current day PC enthusiast is experiencing something more than that.

Did MS get caught completely off guard by Neo being a 2016 thing or something?

The Scorpio reveal was some reactionary stuff obviously. Announcing when and how they did is so illogical from every POV other then "well.. we really just wanted to make sure people didnt forget about us"

It will be interesting to see if MS has any major 3rd parties in its pocket who will be mysteriously absent from any NEO presentations / support lists though. Thats kind of the only thing that can help them soften that year headstart neo has.

Also I fully expect MS to be well over that 6tf target they mentioned. Heck I probably bet they low balls that number on purpose so they can say they exceeded it later.

What's the likelihood PSVR's OLED display and input processing meets UHD Premium specs, apart from only being 1080p of course.

10bit/1024 shades per RGB channel (1.07 billion available colours)
Wide colour gamut (min. 90% P3)
High contrast ratio (max. 0.0005 nits deep black, min. 540 nits bright highlights)

Sony haven't actually UHD Premium certified any of their devices but it'd be a unique selling point, meeting these image quality specs in a relatively cheap device.

Bethesda and EA (but Star Wars might be there).

Thats never going to happen anymore considering they are losing to their competitors 2:1 WW

I don't see why any game would be announced and revealed on Neo first, especially a multiplatform title.
Because said title would be revealed to the audience of the market leader (who is winning by more than 2 to 1). And if RDR was meant to be shown at Sony's E3 conference but pulled this would just be the next opportunity.

That and it's Rockstar, arguably the biggest third party developer for consoles. Which company wouldn't want them to announce their new product on their stage? lol Plus another bonus caveat is that PSM is in New York, where Rockstar HQ is located...not that would mean much but still!

I still think if Red Dead were to be revealed next week it'll start with a Game Informer cover reveal on Monday or Tuesday and then first footage at PSM.

I thought folk would have been going crazy in here with excitement about the Neo, not talking down MS or the Scorpio?

The thread got sidetracked by someone who mentioned the Scorpio and its been downhill since then.

I personally would leave it at the sentiment that Sony does not have to worry about the Scorpio while pursuing their own strategy

But developers will still want to sell the game on other platforms, and by revealing the version of the game the smallest audience will actually play seems counterintuitive - that is assuming Neo updates add more then just an increase in resolution.

This hits the nail right on the head, look at everything they've tried to generate momemtum for the XBO.

3rd Party "Exclusives" - ROTOR, Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, Dead Rising
1st Party "Exclusives" - They've used every tentpole franchise multiple times come end of 2016 - Forza, Halo, Gears
New Operating System - regular and frequent updates - the New Xbox one Experianc, EA Access
Backwards compatibility
Removing Kinect
Firesales with multiple games and giftcards in bundles, constant "limited" price drops

They've thrown the kitchen sink at it and they're down YOY and making no dent in ROW.

So now they're trying 2 items that the competiion has "Power" - without a confirmed console and spec and "VR" even though they haven't got any official announcements of supported headsets.

Its somewhat of a hail mary, but i can't fault them for trying.

As for the Neo, it will be 4.2TF, it will sell fine, the slim will sell a ton and Sony will be coining it in, scorpio will be too little, too late.

Yeah but they'd obviously mention it'd be playable on both Neo and PS4 so it would be both audiences and also offers the opportunity to see what benefits the Neo offers for one of their big open world games?

But the game will look the best on that, its never never stopped companies showing off their multiplat console games running on beastly PC's at events.

First of all, lot of third party games are announced with highest PC settings that most people who play said game will never experience. Secondly, even on Sony's stage they would make sure people understand that all the games will run on base PS4. Furthermore, press releases will go out as soon as new announcements are made to get the message out that it is coming to the all the platforms it is coming to. Ergo, this is a non-issue.

South Africa too. Maybe.

Oh man, Red Dead Redemption is one of my favorite games of all time, an absolute masterpiece, if they announce a sequel, oh man....

You all might think my theory is crazy but this might also be how Xbox Scorpio will get to 6TF.

Xbox One S APU + 36 CU polaris GPU both clocked at 980MHz would be 6TF

or it can be the Xbox One S APU with all 14 CUs enabled + the 36 CU GPU both clocked at 950MHz that would also be 6TF

But what about Vega?

I still think if Red Dead were to be revealed next week it'll start with a Game Informer cover reveal on Monday or Tuesday and then first footage at PSM.
That's a good call. I hope it's not revealed in a cover reveal but rather in a trailer at the conference because I think that would be a lot better but I could see that happening.

They don't have to show button prompts in the trailer, so they could easily immediately upload the trailer to their channel but with the XB1 and (if the port is not delayed PC) logo at the end to sell the game to that audience. And if it's not coming out on PC until a couple of years after the console version I'm sure they would love to first show it off in the highest graphical fidelity they can currently show (since Scorpio games won't be getting shown off until next year). I think showing that version would mostly just get people excited for Red Dead and by association Neo.
