If Sony invested in a more powerful console then Microsoft invested in another more powerful console at their turn, if Microsoft is allowing devs to do exclusive games on Scorpio, why would you think Sony wouldn't do the same for Neo?

Because they have different strategies and don't have to follow each other?

Sony was going to supposedly do this regardless of what MS did, they both wanted upgraded units.MS is the one saying that the era of generations is over for them, and Sony is the one saying otherwise.

Yep, that's my final prediction going into the meeting.

4.14 Polaris GPU
2.4 GHZ Jaguar CPU
8GB GDDR5 RAM at 218-224GB/s

399$

October-November

BOOK IT
Still think we need more memory bandwidth. The CPU and the GPU will be fighting for memory access.

Polaris has significantly better bandwidth utilization than architectures before. You can do more with a decent amount less.

I know about the lossless color compression, but what about the disproportionate bandwidth allocation? Was it an early APU limitation that they're gonna fix in this iteration?

Another thing that needs fixing is the VCE latency... we're talking about an extra 100ms of input lag, even in LAN Remote Play (<1ms).

How do you know i won't buy one? I may at one point do so, depending on the circumstances involved.

Also, why do i have to want to buy one to speculate on information about the console? Am i barred from doing so without a 'i bought a ps4 neo' seal of approval?
I mean, I was wondering the same thing in all fairness. Mostly because you said 'I have no desire to buy Neo' I think it was.

It's just funny to have such strong wants and desires for somthing you have no interest in buying. Of course I can understand being swept up in the hype and changing your mind about that too :)

Edit: also, I agree with you mostly on the likely specs. Though holding some glimmer of hope for 5.5 haha.

It would be 1 APU + a GPU all on a SoC.

I was just throwing the cache out there in hopes that it would be away to supply more bandwidth & less latency for some tasks.
What kind of cache? eDRAM?

Also, are you talking about 2 stacked dies? How are you gonna cool that thing? Die stacking works in mobile SoCs, because they're extremely low-power to begin with.

I don't see the point of 5TF, and it being super expensive. Just cause its a higher tier than super budget PS4(which i expect to be 249 in its lower SKU) doesn' tmean it has to go above PS4's 'just right' price level. Especially considering it would put PS5 in an awkward position, since its bound to be significantly more powerful than the jump of PS4 to NEO, yet will have to be priced at a mainstream price level like PS4.

I can see the prices fluctuating depending on harddrive space. So maybe base PS4 slim will be 249 and base NEO will be 399, and the price will go up depending on the HDD's included
I don't think 399 is this magic end all be all price point that you are making it out to be. There was a lot of doubt how this console generation would go in the industry and Sony just went the very safe and conservative route to make sure they were not going to be under cut by ms and also making sure they launched in close proximity and built a machine that was already outclassed by PC before it came out. Ms did not have much problem selling in the initial year at 499 but then Sony with the extra power and lower price pulled ahead. I believe a potential ps5 will launch at 499 as well with power that atleast matches the latest PC cards during its launch.

The 599 PS3 was just a little over the edge especially coming a year late and surrounded by negativity from developers and so I don't think Sony will ever go above 499. I can't see Microsoft launching Scorpio at 399 so Sony has a lot of leeway to undercut them a year later even if ms boosts specs.

I'm more intereseted in the feature exclusives to Neo. Any rumour floating around?

If there is it'll probably be VR lounge features. Like a real theater mode, and not just a screen in black space.

This is likely because PS4 won't have the power to render anything other than the game while Neo does.

Psp/vita compatibility is probably a safe bet. My out of left field crazy theory is Valve and Sony partnering up and doing some crazy things like unified friends list and cross platform coop and maybe some cross buy titles like ms with Windows 10 and xbox. It doesn't mean Sony will bring ps4 exclusives to PC though since they still would want to move hardware. Neo will probably have steam link support in this scenario.

You guys think Neo is gonna ship with the same controller as the slim? If it does, do you think Sony is gonna unveil a more premium Dual Shock for purchase separately . I would be down for that personally.

I don't think Sony will really care that much. 4K adoption is starting to make sense now, and everyone buying a new TV in 2017 but also most people buying TVs in 2016 will be desperately looking for 4K content. Sony has a secondary motive in this since they greatly benefit from getting people to buy new TVs, compared to other console makers.

This all hinges on how much die size that extra IPC is costing Sony.

Right now its less than 10% of 4K owners. Those that recently bought a 1080P HDTV are not the kind of folks to upgrade quickly and won't for the foreseeable future. It literally took 10 years to get those same people to even upgrade to a 1080P HDTV and these are the majority of customers out there. What you have with those that own a 4K HDTV...are the kind of folks that do upgrade more frequently but most people are not standing in line eagerly waiting for a 4K HDTV. Most cable providers are actually waiting for the jump to 8K content before doing their technology overhaul...Right now they say that it will take 5 years or around 2020/2021 when 4K HDTV's are a majority...we are talking 5 to 6 years until we get there. This entire 4K push is pure marketing with zero substance for the foreseeable future. 1080P gaming will be the norm for a while still, imho.

That would allow for easy PSVita/PS1/PSP emulation complete with the compatible codecs already written

If they did that AND those new Vita rumors are true, I'd like to see the ability to hook up a Vita directly (or via Bluetooth) to PS4 Neo, allowing you to play the all non-PSTV compatible games on your TV using the Vita as the controller. In hindsight, I really wished PSVita had no gimmicks (touch screen, back-touch pad, camera, etc.). It would've made PSTV a much more appealing product for people and it would've made Vita games better suited to be future proofed.

take this for what it's worth but yesterday talking to little birdie in the know at COD XP, final dev kits wont go out until the Sept 7th reveal and expect NEO to be higher than the original rumored specs. Late September/Early October launch.

I've had a few other winks and nods that NEO is out in Sept/Oct this year but this was the first time I've heard specs closer to Scorpio from some one on the dev side of the fence.

Interesting. I already sold my PS4 about 3 months ago....Right now im on the verge of upgrading my PC graphic's card but i might hold off on that until Vega next year and just put everything i have saved up for Neo and a bunch of games...not sure what to do but Sept 7th will let me know what to do. It would be nice to see the Neo bumped up in spec. I have zero interest in Scorpio as i already have a competent gaming PC...so its PC and Neo for me, now i just need to know what will get my money first.

Honestly, I don't think people buy TVs based on what most cable or TV providers in the U.S. Are doing. Most are still only providing 1080i content here. Some 1080p.

IMO, people buying TVs fall into a few categories for those shopping for one. Budget TV shoppers and High end TV shoppers. Budget TV shoppers mostly want the most bang for their buck regardless of source device. Budget shoppers with some knowledge still might want 4K UHD now. They don't know when they can buy another set and there are budget 4K sets out there which they can buy regardless of how high the quality. Some don't give a crap about 4K if they can get a larger set for the same money.

People with the money not to worry tend to buy the best they can and do. Some because they want the set for 6-10 years and want some future proofing. Others because it is the best at the time they buy.

Regardless of which set they buy here in the U.S. They know most providers of TV content aren't giving them content which matches what their TV can do, and streamed content will likely match up to 1080p for most cases, though streaming providers like Netflix and Amazon have some 4K(compressed) content. The general public doesn't actually know that compressed 4K streams are generally a match for standard Blu Ray content. They believe it is higher quality than that. Only those with the knowledge to know the difference, those that can see the difference and those with a UHD player and can see the difference know that 4K streams aren't the same quality.

People buy marketing.

I believe Lord Cerny will surprise us the specs again. I honestly think the cpu will be better this time. In Lord Cerny we trust!

I feel like these arguments about 4K adoption could be made about HD adoption back in 2005 as well

But HD is already HD. as of right now we are just being forced into UHD to make money for the television companies to get a push out of more expensive televisions

I don't know what you mean by HD is already HD
people made similar arguments about HDTV back in the day

Def hoping for an elite controller, but I'm not holding my breath. Nice avatar, btw. 😉
