what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Good choices, both are great games. Xenoblade is a modern classic, and although 7th Dragon is nowhere near as good as XC, it's still a fun dungeon crawler.

Yes, I'm finding that 7th Dragon is a great game for casual play or when I have shorter intervals of time available. It is light enough to jump in and out of, yet very fun. It plays kind of like an Etrian Odyssey but with full 3D graphics as compared to the minimalistic approach of EO. I'm really enjoying it.

Xenoblade on the other hand is blowing me out of the water. It is incredibly immersive. I won't play that unless I have my Senheiser headphones on and a few hours to sink into it. I really didn't expect a handheld game to pull me in like that.

I'm also playing Bravely Second. Great game, but boy those characters sure like to talk a lot!

Beat the NA release of MeiQ once, just wrapping up the post game before starting new game plus and seeing what new areas I unlocked.

After owning the game for over a decade I'm finally getting around to playing Final Fantasy IX. I'm enjoying myself so far and am currently on the second disk.

Just finished platting I Am Setsuna. I enjoyed the game a lot, definitely glad I played through it. Next JRPG probably will be FFXV when it comes out...

I got Dark Cloud 2 off the sale a couple days ago.

Game feels like a grind and an errand fest.

Yet I'm sorta addicted. Wouldn't mind a follow up.

Xenogears complete! If only that game wasn't a technical mess I'd play it more often!

Next up I'll finish the original .hack saga by replaying Quarantine! Shouldn't take long at all so I'll have something of a breather before ToCS2 next week!

Just finished I Am Setsuna, which is a great game. Sure, it's not Chrono Trigger, but what game is? Definitely one of my favorite games of the year. Think I'm abandoning the platinum though... I beat the game and did all the side quests except for the mega boss a few spritnite eaten monsters, and I ended up with 69 fluxuations. Even cheesing spamming healing commands against a pengy over and over again, it would take forever to get all the way up to 200...

Doing another playthrough of Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume. What a great game. Wish the Fire Emblem series had writing like this.

Got the plat for The Witch and the Hundred Knight: Revival Edition, so now I have the ones for both the PS3 and PS4 versions. That's one game I don't want to play ever again.

Started up God Eater: Ressurection. Lots of fun so far

Started a while ago, but I'm playing all the Trails games, from FC to SC then CSI preparing for the CSII launch. Obviously I won't finish all of them before the game is out, but I plan on playing them from here on out until I finish CSII.

Finished Bravely Default a few days ago.
Beside the weak second half ,it's a really great game.
The combat and job systems are some of the best I have ever seen.
I know some people have problems with the story and characters, but I really like them, too.
Well, except for Tiz, heis really boring.
I'm still finishing a few side quests before moving on to the next game.

I should probably get back to Trails in the Sky,but I have a hard time making it past the prologue.

I finished Bravely Second a few days ago. I've since jumped into Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker.

I hope to have DS2RB finished before the launch of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice.

you going for all achievements? good luck. both DS are so addicting. every run I do feels as fresh as my first playthrough

Well, XC wasn't originally a handheld game, so that may be part of it ;). Of course, I think handheld games can definitely blow you away, but the sheer sense of scale in XC is unlike anything seen on a handheld before. Also the soundtrack is incredible.

Good way to describe 7th Dragon, it does feel like a less hard-core, higher production value Etrian Odyssey in some respects. Not surprising since the series have the same creator. Definitely one of the better JRPGs on the system imo, the battle system and character progression mechanics are great. Story is average but it doesn't take itself too seriously, which helps.

It's Dragon Warrior Monster / Dragon Quest Monster but to the infinite degree!

500+ monsters, breeding, equipment, customization, and endless levelling and dungeons.

On track to be my GotY and looks to be as under the radar as DQM was on the GameBoy all those years back...

I am playing Final Fantasy 2 (PS1) ... and I am enjoying it. This isn't bad, especially not for a classic JRPG. I'm not resorting to hitting myself or any sort of extensive grinding (I grinded a bit for money after getting mythril). You can really see the roots of the series in this game. An evil empire. A resistance force.
Star Wars
.

The little 2D animated scenes that act as stand ins for what would otherwise be FMV are really cool. It's too bad that FFV and FFVI weren't remade in this way. Or FFIII for that matter.

I enjoyed FFII, but I think the game has no balance whatsoever and the entire game design is the result of a madman. Like, when you enter into a room, you find yourself in the middle of it instead of being near the door. FOR WHAT PURPOSE.

Story is pretty cool for a NES RPG, tho'. It handles war and deaths way better than FFIV and FFXII ever did and it actually feels like your party is the moving force behind the story.

To punish you for opening doors. : p

7th Dragon III. I almost skipped it but decided to give the demo a whirl while traveling. Story notwithstanding (it's not terrible, just inconsequential), I'm really enjoying it. I like the base-building mechanics and the extent to which each class can be customized. I read some reviews that complained about the difficulty (too easy), but for me the balance is just right. Death is rarely punishing; it's a simple matter to restart a battle and put a new strategy to work.

Oh, and that Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack? Killer-diller.

About to finish SMT Apocalypse. Don't know if I should continue with Ys VIII or start ToB now. Ys VIII's pacing is so damn slow. Played four hours and nothing interesting happened. I hate cut-scenes in low budget 3D games: three people standing there, barely animated. You can't speed it up unless you are willing to skip the whole story.

Doing another playthrough of Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume. What a great game. Wish the Fire Emblem series had writing like this.

Very few JRPGs have writing on that level.

Started .hack//Quarantine today, beat .hack//Quarantine today!

Infection - 02:59:05
Mutation - 03:41:32
Outbreak - 04:32:07
Quarantine - 05:53:31
IMOQ Series - 17:06:15

Speeding through 'em was a blast but next time around I'm going back to a nice casual pace.

Now I'ma chill with Style Savvy: FF the next couple of days until more Cold Steel goodness arrives!

Been dividing my time between Mega Man Legends 2 (calling it an "RPG" is a bit of a stretch but whatevs), and Final Fantasy Legend 3 (definitely an RPG).

MML2 is better than the first game in certain ways (the music, oh god the music is so much better, and the dual analog controls too), but worse in others (the small islands aren't as appealing as the large town with interconnected dungeons the first game has, and oh god the water dungeon was HORRIBLE).

FFL3 I'm exploring the Future world now. Game seems pretty aimless and the story doesn't make a whole lick of sense... the "Pureland Water Entity" appears and starts flooding the world, and people from the future go to the present to stop it, but then also travel to the past and back to the future, where the only differences between the worlds is that they are more flooded as you go further forward in time. Game is slightly grindy but not horribly so (the Chaos battle in his underwater castle was ROUGH though). And the game doesn't always spell out where you need to go next.

Overall, seems to be much weaker than FFL2 (especially in terms of scenario, FFL2 was brilliant for a game of that era!), even if it is much more traditional than the Kawazu Kraziness that was the other FFL games. In fact, it almost reminds me of Mystic Quest of all things - you can jump, and you see your sprites during battle (small and facing the enemy, just like MQ!).

I was surprised to find out I was among the first to platinum this game when it released in the west. I really hope this studio keeps on making similar games.

Anyways, not really a JRPG but recently finished Saturday Morning RPG and I didn't really like it. You get many items for your arsenal, yet only a few seems to be effective.

Next game should be World of Final Fantasy, Cosmic Star Heroine or Trails of Cold Steel.

started FFXIII this weekend and a few hours in I find it interesting. maybe there is some love in this thread for the game because everywhere else i get asked why I play that aweful game. But I want to form my own opinion about that game so nobody can talk me out of it.

Over the last few weeks I've beaten Dragon Quest 3 and Final Fantasy I. DQ 3 is a masterpiece, thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game and it'll probably be on my top 20 if we ever do another "essential rpgs" voting again.

Final Fantasy I was more of a mixed bag. It's pretty impressive for the time it came out and it has some good ideas but it wasn't exactly fun to play. The encounter rate is so high that exploration felt like a chore since I could barely take 3 steps without 9 enemies ambushing my party and having to sit there for a minute watching them pummel me before I get the chance to even do anything ("enemy attacks first" is way too frequent and since every encounter comes with Musou-numbers of enemies battles feel like they take forever). The magic charge system and the lack of a reliable way to recharge it inside a dungeon also made sure my black and white mages stayed mostly useless throughout the game except for bosses and a few encounters where the tedium would get to me and I'd be like "you know what screw this I'm Flaring these fuckers". I almost wish I did a party with 3 fighters and 1 white/black mage to warp out of dungeons since the former far outclasses everyone else in combat.
I still somewhat enjoyed it though. Dungeons are actually threatening and pose a level of challenge that I sorely miss from more recent installments of the franchise, where they feel more like a formality. Gil is useful since most items are fairly pricey and you can't just stack up on resources and instead have to choose carefully what you'll actually need. The new boss tracks for the Origins release are pretty sweet. Overall, it's somewhere between a 6 or 7.
Still a better game than XIII.

Currently playing FF V, by far the best gameplay in a mainline title imo. The balance between customizability and challenge feels just right. See, this is why I kinda resent FF for trying to reinvent the wheel with every single release. I would really love to see them improve upon the ideas of the job system introduced in V in another mainline title, but alas they never did it again and instead we're stuck with shit like junctions or paradigms.

Now, I'm not sure whether I should go with the android version of FF II or if I should stick with Origins. Are the newer versions still challenging on their own right or do they just completely remove every ounce of balance from the game, like the FFI rereleases? Because I'm not sure if I can stand another "miss!", enemy ambush bonanza like 1 and would actually enjoy a more balanced approach to difficulty, but if it's too much on the easy side then I'd still rather go with Origins.

Went back to Digital Devil Saga after finishing Raidou 1 and it's been a lot of fun. It plays almost the same as Nocturne but without demon recruitment and with set party members instead, but it gives you free reign for what skills everyone learns, so customization is easier than ever.

Story is intriguing, the setting is interesting and the characters have actual depth, which is definitely a twist in these games lol. The feeding and hunting mechanics add some cool twists to the press turn systems and I think overall it might be the most mechanically solid JRPG I've ever played.

Too bad it runs awful as a PS2 Classic on PS3. I hope the PS2 SMT catalogue makes it to PS4 sometime.

And damn, that music by Meguro the GOAT.

So far it's been endless fun EXCEPT for that princess castle dungeon, I hope there's nothing else like that...

I got so tired of that theme by the end

this is the best tho. I love it so much I use it as my ringtone.

Yeah not surprised, I forgot to mention that the encounter rate can get a little bit crazy at times and while I don't mind the battles, it slows down exploration too much.

That theme tho, I fought detachable head dragon guy yesterday and had to take a moment to enjoy the music before doing anything. Meguro is seriously one of the best out there.

About to start Dragon Quest V for the first time. This is my first Dragon Quest game and I've heard it's one of the best in the series, so wanted to check it out before VII.

Great choice.

There's a feature in it called party chat. That's when you talk to your party members to see what they have to say about the situation. Use it after you talk to any person in the towns or reach any new part of a dungeon. They'll always have something new to say.

Finishing my Atlus run with SMTIV.

It's a decent game for sure and fusing demons is cool but something is missing. Maybe it's the very bland cast, poor dungeons or mazey world map. I like the game but I don't love it. And after playing TMS#FE and Persona 4 and now this very closely each other the battle system is starting to get a bit boring.

Gonna take some break from JRPGs after this. Though I should find time to play FFXV, WoFF and Persona 5 with all the other great games coming too.

Spoilers for neutral ending.
Needing to finish all those challenge quests can kiss my ass. I hate this kind of padding.

How did you like Raidou? Been looking for a good JRPG to play since Persona got knocked out of 2016 and FFXV was delayed again. Haven't touched my PS3 in awhile. (It's been having problems with connecting to the network for some reason.)

Can't decide if I should play Lightning Returns on PC or try getting my PS3 to work so I can finally finish DDS or Raidou 2.

Anyone recommend a good reliable place to pick up a PS3 slim with the lowest price atm? Amazon has some for around 110$, anywhere else I should look for one cheaper other than say eBay?

Really wish FFXV and/or P5 hadn't delayed their releases. Hope SMTIV F is good but tbh I've had a really hard time playing on a handheld and actually getting invested enough to finish them. I don't know what it is but now that I'm older it just doesn't seem to grab my attention anymore for very long. Xenoblade X was the last console JRPG that was able to hook me but I still haven't been able to finish it once I hit a wall with my character levels. Think around chapter 8? The one that everyone says the boss is considered the hardest part up to that point.

I've been playing through the Suikoden series with my boyfriend and we've just gotten to 5, and I have to say, I didn't realise at the time how slow the game is to start.

Honestly weve had more trouble getting into 5 than 4, which was just as "better than its reputation" as I remembered thinking it was when it came out.

I believe the FF II for android is comparable to the PSP version. I would recommend it in a heartbeat over PS1 because it lessens the amount of points needed to level up weapon and magic profficiency. In the PS1 release every use adds 1 percentage point to it getting better which takes way too long to even gain a level. In this version one usage might earn 10x that. I still found it to be a rather balanced game overall, unlike FF I's release. But now you can actually explore the leveling system of FF II in a more relaxing way which isn't so grindy.

Seeing your spells evolve into flashier versions is one of the best parts of FF II IMO.
