what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Pokemon Alpha Sapphire!

I'm 5/8 of the way through the gyms and it's pretty easy so far, but this is the longest a Pokemon game has ever held my interest.

Probably going to trade it int towards Sun/Moon after I beat the elite 4, it's still worth ~20 or so.

Valkyria Chronicles on PS4, i'm much better this time round. It kicked my arse last time, just beating it was an achievement, this time i'm going for platinum.

I was a bit gutted I only managed B rank for the Batomys fight. I tried so hard and was perfect I thought. Oh well, new game plus for that one.

I played a crap ton of Bravely Default.
The game is awesome, but fuck the red mage boss.
I will have to skip him for now, because I simply can't keep up with his healling nonsense.

Gonna start Xenogears tonight, an to heck with diggin' up my original PS and Gameshark! I'll play through it with no cheats to increase the text speed. This is gonna hurt x.x

edit: This ost is still a classic!

Finished up Star Ocean 5...that's a bad game but at least it had the decency to be mercifully short.

Not sure what to go for next.
Wild arms 3-never played a wild arms before.
Trails in the Sky SC-Lol i need a quick guide or something to refresh my memory of the first game.
Or Suikoden 2

Playing through Star Ocean 5 right now. It has fun gameplay, poor writing, average music, great character designs, and a decent story.

I am in post-game right now, and there is a lot of grinding involved if you want to optimise your party. Regardless, I'm enjoying it.

Wow from my tracking so far Xenogears may be one of those rare games where the in-game timer could be considered 100% accurate to your real play time. More importantly however is that the games still amazing! Except for now as I'm nearly about to head down into the sewers of horror x.x

Booted up Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Hadn't played it in a few months. At 52 hours. It's a good game despite its flaws. It's like a comfy blanket or chicken soup. Makes me feel good.

If SRPGs count:

Stella Deus

pretty neat game on ps2.

Finished FF6, now can't wait for this year's essential RPGs thread so I can somehow decide between it and Xenoblade. Currently playing Dragon Quest V,
just got married and learnt why one should NOT gamble
and simultaneously playing Undertale. Not strictly a jrpg, but it feels relevant enough. Likely postponing Dragon Quest VII 3ds to an October game when it hits Europe, so I'll still have time for VI I guess. (Don't need to play VI first plotwise to my knowledge, but what kind of heathen plays VII before VI while owning VI?)

Finished Tales of Hearts R and I thought it was pretty average but had some decent combat. Pretty average story and characters for the Tales series.

About 5 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles X. Sometimes I get a little to wrapped up in trying to figure out builds and min-maxing and instead I just need to play the game and all that stuff will come to me.

Been playing Bravely Default,

I just started chapter 5 @ 65hrs in.

Been enjoying it, but I need a break for a week or so. That way I look forward to what looks like 4 chapters of Ground Hog day.

Stella Glow is honestly a great game. Imageepoch's best game imo, a really fun, endearing SRPG.

Yeah. You can clearly see them improving themselves step by step since the first Luminous Arc game. Too bad they went bankrupt just when they finally reached the sweet spot for their SRPG formula.

At the moment I have "just" the following in various states of actively being played:

Trails in the Sky First Chapter - I'm... actually I have no idea where in the game I am. I loaded it up for the first time in ages about a day ago, and everything was weirdly orange (I have changed graphics card since I last played it!). I don't want to abandon it, though...

I Am Setsuna - I've hit the magic point in RPGs where all I have left to do is the last boss but because of sidequests I can't bring myself to actually beat the game. I must rectify that... I've had fun with it but it's not exactly going to stick in the mind.

Star Ocean 5 - oh god why did I buy this it's awful. I think I must have never liked Second Story in the first place, although 3 was fine I guess 4 is awful as everyone knows... Although thinking about it, I didn't mind the SNES original. Still, Star Ocean 5 is dreadful and I feel bad for buying it - and I've barely even gotten anywhere in it yet!

Digimon Cyber Sleuth - why did people get so overexcited about this? Thus far it's ridiculously easy and the plot is super dull. I liked Digimon on TV 15 years ago or whenever it was, but this does not live up to nostalgia.

Plus others which I'm going to pretend I'm not playing because I have a stupid backlog and I feel bad.

Finished Tales of Hearts R and I thought it was pretty average but had some decent combat. Pretty average story and characters for the Tales series.

Yeah, Tales of Hearts R was pretty good but I'm still searching for a Tales game that beats Vesperia for me. I just started running through Symphonia yesterday so I'll see how it goes.
Of the few Tales games I've played I would put them in the order of:

Vesperia>>Destiny>>>Hearts>>>>>Phantasia

Did the first 2 chapters in Genso Suikogaiden vol 2. Not really an RPG, it's more of a visual novel, but it's an interesting spinoff of a classic RPG series. The first Genso Suikogaiden was pretty short so I figure I have another 2 hours or so till this one is done.

Also learnt how awesome the Battlecry skill is in Setsuna. So now I did a lot of the sidequests, all that remains is the one-on-one battle with
Hapsper
and then the uber-powerful secret boss. Then I'll go for the final boss. Hopefully will finish that soon too.

After that, I'm at a bit of an impasse... Do I want to play a shorter game a la FFL3, Mega Man Legends 2, Granstream Saga, or dive into long-ass Cold Steel or Suikoden 5? This is my first weekend where I have absolutely nothing going on since like April so I'll make sure to get a lot of gaming
and cleaning, sigh
in!

Man Golden Sun dialogs and story... especially knowing the twist in advance, it looks like the characters (or the writers) are perpetually on drugs and dropping brain cells along the way.

The dungeon design is p. fucking good I have to say, the Lighthouse was top notch. My only complaint is some puzzles depend on psynergy, and sometimes it's not very clear whatever you are supposed to solve them now or later. (Since psynergy change depending on the dijin equipped)

I really enjoyed my time with Hearts R, it felt like a "Golden Era" Tales. Must have been the world map.

I'm currently playing through Final Fantasy VI for GBA but using a DS.

Oh man. This game is wonderful! The music, the sprite work and the diverse cast of characters and party members are just top-notch. Locke and Celes are the characters I'm most interested in so far but each party members has very distinct and unique characters so I'm sure people like very different characters.

However my favourite part of the game so far is the bosses. Bosses like Ultros & Vargas are just so interesting and personally found them challenging. Love it.

My only complaint with the game so far is that sometimes I have no idea where I'm supposed to go. Got stuck for a while running around the map because I didn't talk to someone in Figaro Castle at the beginning of the game. Small stuff like that happened to me during the time I played but I'm guessing its just cause I'm spoiled with way-points and modern games telling me exactly what I'm supposed to do or go next.

At the moment I'm on the Phantom Train and it is a pretty interesting scenario. Loved the sudden change of perspective during the short forest area.

Really excited to see where this game is gonna go next.

Currently on Chapter 2 of Legend of Dragoon and just picked up Kongol.

Hoping to finish it up in a couple of days and then start my replay of Legend of Legaia.

PS1 JRPGs were so good...

Just picked up 7th Dragon III Code: VFD and Xenoblade Chronicles. Finally getting back into handhelds after a lengthy absence. So far really enjoying 7th Dragon. Planning to start Xenoblade this evening.

About to wrap up FFX HD Remaster ( VIII and X are the only main series FF games i've never beat). Going in on Super Robot Wars OG: The Moon Dwellers. The translation is serviceable, but I cant complain since its a new SRW on a current gen system that native English speakers can play! It looks amazing in action too.

Chipping away at Panzer Dragoon Saga every so often. I know its short, so its like I dont want it to end.

Playing through Bravely Default right now. I really like the idea of switching between jobs whenever you like, although not sure if i should switch between them often or pick one and stick with it. Some of the jobs also seem rather useless right now (Merchant for example)

Went back to NieR because of the Steam/PC announcement of NieR Automata.

Finished
Endings A and B, now going for C and of course D again.

This game just might have the most satisfying NG+ I've ever played. The mechanics itself are serviceable but I think this is still one of my favourite experiences from the last console generation.

Good choices, both are great games. Xenoblade is a modern classic, and although 7th Dragon is nowhere near as good as XC, it's still a fun dungeon crawler.

A bit into Suikoden 2 and having a blast with it.

Lol Luca Blight holy shit-he's one of those guys who has been built up so much by people that i thought the real thing could never live up to expectations, boy did he prove me wrong.

Lots of great little scene already. The one where Nanami+MC just sit and wait for Jowy really got to me.

Nothing about GS2's hype is overwrought.

Nothing.

I'm early on in a bunch of JRPGs. Help me pick one, gaf!

#FE
Bravely Second
Digimon Cyber Sleuth
Breath of Fire 3

I beat Setsuna, finally. Definitely a bit underrated, sure it has its share of issues but I felt it was pretty charming and fulfilling.

I also played through Genso Suikogaiden vol 2, a visual novel that takes place shortly after the events in Suikoden 2. The storytelling was fairly interesting (you finally get to see a bit of Harmonia!) but I really feel like the game was so short that both vol 1 and 2 could have been combined into one game. If you're a hardcore fan of Suikoden lore, it's worth playing I think.

Now, it's time to start on something new from out of the backlog. LOTS of options here, I think I'll have to do some picking out of a hat, unless anyone here wants to give me advice:

Final Fantasy Legend III
Suikoden 5
Trails of Cold Steel
Granstream Saga
Mega Man Legends 2
Tales of Xillia

Final Fantasy Legend III
Suikoden 5
Trails of Cold Steel
Guardian's Crusade
Mega Man Legends 2
Tales of Xillia

I never did find the time to play through Suikogaiden 2! I should do that. It sounds like it adds a lot more to the lore than Suikogaiden 1 did.

Can only speak to the first two, but FFL3 and Suikoden 5 couldn't be much more different.

FFL3 is a whimsical, short time-traveling game that never bothers to make any sense. Fantastic music, tough bosses, but not mechanically all that interesting (you can change your characters into beasts/monsters and cyborgs/robots, but they tended to be less effective than human in my experience). Some FAQs go into detail about how the alternate forms can be effective. If you're diligent about it they may be worthwhile -- I never found using a FAQ for a mobile game all that fun.

If you're on a Suikoden kick and haven't played 5 yet, it's fantastic. The first 6 hours or so are a super story-heavy intro, and the game is at least 40 hours, so it's lengthier than most of the games but the payoff throughout the midgame makes the intro well worth it. Difficulty-wise it's a walk in the park, especially if you use passive runes on characters. Music's great, so it does have that in common with FFL3 I suppose.

Have fun, though! They're both good games in their own way.

Bravely Second
Digimon Cyber Sleuth
Breath of Fire 3

I am currently playing #FE and loving it. I played Digimon and got tired near the end of it.

Haven't played the other two, so pick #FE

Final Fantasy Legend III
Suikoden 5
Trails of Cold Steel
Guardian's Crusade
Mega Man Legends 2
Tales of Xillia

I am a huge Trails fan, but I still haven't played Cold Steel. Going from what I know of the series and other people's reaction, it's great.

I would also recommend for you to play Cold Steel because CS2 is coming out soon and you may finish CS1 in time to play CS2 with everyone else in the forum.

Currently juggling:

Digimon Cyber Sleuth
Yo-Kai Watch
Dragon Quest V

Enjoying all of them! I also have SMT IV waiting to be played. I don't want to mix too many jrpgs at once though or I'll probably never finish them.

The spritework is divine in this fully-featured classic.

Try this one out if you've played FC/SC (it's not as good but it'll get you on the CS2 hype train with us.) :P

Bravely Second
Digimon Cyber Sleuth
Breath of Fire 3

I played BOF3 recently and found it really average with a extremely high encounter rate, awful mandatory mini games, and not much story. Recommend skipping.

Been playing Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk all week. My first time playing an Atelier game. Already around the end of the game and loosely used a guide to avoid missing anything important for endings.

Getting soooo close to the end of Xenogears I can almost taste it! Shockingly the game has yet to crash on me where it usually does or any other place! Gonna hope that holds true to the end!

I just beat EarthBound for the first time and it was utterly spell binding. Now I know what everyone was talking about, its a truly wonderful experience

Hell yeah! I'm on the Earthbound train as well, and enjoying every minute of it. From its charm to its mechanics, utterly perfect.

In my fourth year of first time playthroughs of breath of fire iv, chrono trigger, final fantasy tactics, and Ni no kuni
