But... the jump from 1.3 to 6 is a hell of a lot bigger than 1.8 to 4.2, and I think that's the sticking point for anyone making a comparison, how significant of an upgrade is Neo compared to Scorpio.

I'm not entirely sure why people keep bringing up the jump between 4.2 to 6 being less than 1.8 to 4.2, I guess trying to minimize Scorpio's significant jump? but even playing Devi's advocate, the jump from 4.2 to 6 is actually more significant than 1.3 to 1.8, and we all saw how that turned out, and that's without accounting the CPU, the gap may be much bigger than what we know.

Bottom line, the upgrade to Neo is nice, but can we quit downplaying Scorpio?
we don't know final specs of either consoles at this point, but if those numbers hold true, I think people are just implying it might be somewhat difficult for the Scorpio to clearly show how superior the hardware is to everyday consumers because both it and Neo are attached to their original platforms.

I don't think anyone is downplaying Scorpio will be the most powerful console when it launches. How much it will matter is the debate, and for a variety of reasons I think that's a pretty interesting one.

That's a possible consequence of Neo, not the reason to exists.

"House said that one of the key motivations for PlayStation 4 Neo was specifically to prevent high-end users from abandoning the product at an earlier point than its natural eight-year lifespan. “We’ve traditionally seen that some of the core audience tends to gravitate back to high-end PCs at some point because these are the people who want the finest graphical performance,” he said. “So here’s a great opportunity to have them stay within our ecosystem."

They view PC as a competitor and it's *one of* the reasons Neo exists. I don't see how you can deny this.

Yup, pretty much this.

Especially when you consider the fact that the baseline is still ps4/xbox one and there won't be any scorpio/neo exclusive games, the differences will be much harder to show off.

If the Xbox One had been on the market for a whole year ahead of the PS4 with stuff like Ryse shown off, the PS4 KZ Shadowfall reveal would not have been nearly as impressive. That's what people are saying.

^^ guys this ain't a Scorpio thread ;-)

I've lost track - are there any handheld rumours? Now I've got a family, it's really hard for me to sit @ a console and play... but I'm figuring I can get away with handhelds. I'm waiting to see what happens with NX too for the same reason...

Awwww, let's.

Then again, we have no real idea what either is, so...

Lol, now that I read that back it does sound silly, I didn't mean it as a request, but more like I find it ridiculous when people make useless comparisons to satisfy their agenda, just stahp. Neo will serve its purpose and will do well, no need to compare.

Is golem on ue4?

Twitter: https://twitter.com/highwire_games/status/673558485288640513
What? You thought our tiny team was writing our own engine? It's 2015... of course we use UE4!

Also here,

Actually, I read somewhere that Highwire and Epic are both working on UE4-'VR' stuff.

found it:

http://www.polygon.com/2016/2/22/11051686/golem-playstationvr-highwire-games
"Everybody has the exact same console, the exact same booster box, the exact same screen on their eyeballs," Griesemer said. "So a lot of the messiness and lack of optimization that you have to have on the PC so it will run on everything? We just can get that right here. Also, Unreal Engine is awesome." The Highwire team has been in contact with Epic Seattle on a special VR rendering mode that helps with optimization, and it has Alex Dracott, who worked on Infamous: First Light, Second Son and PlanetSide 2, "hand writing and shaders and hand-keying the lights." It's not enough to make sure the team has a beautiful game. It has to make sure the game runs at a constant 90 frames per second in both eyes.

I caught up with Nick Whiting from Epic Seattle, who talked a bit about Golem.

"With VR development still so new for everyone in the industry, we've taken a very hands-on approach with teams using Unreal Engine 4," Whiting said. "With Highwire, they were one of the first PSVR projects on UE4 that we were able to take this approach with, thanks to them being located very close to our Epic Seattle offices. We'd send them early builds and improvements for PSVR as soon as we'd finish them, and they'd try them out in their project, and let us know how they worked. From there, we'd iterate back-and-forth a little bit, and in the end, both our product and theirs were mutually improved."

Definitely a move to downplay scorpion.

However I can't help but feel that the Neo and the Scorpion will quite literally be the most underwhelming console reveals of all time. That's the fault of being iterative instead of generational.

You think Sony would start a new gen 3 years into this one ?
While also selling loads on consoles .
This is to try out a new business model and is just a better PS4 .

Sounds like they view PCs as a competitor, I don't think they've ever had this view before.
They're also been pretty willing to support PC Gaming, there's been cross-platform multiplayer between PC and PlayStation consoles since the PlayStation 2, and they also once had a studio called Sony Online Entertainment which primarily made PC games.
I bet most people who own both PC and PS4 were primarily PC gamers first who bought a PS4 for the exclusive 1st party games. An upgraded PS4 won't stop people from migrating to PC. There are other reasons people choose PC besides graphics (e.g. No PS Plus subscription for online play, Steam sales, the openness of the platform, etc.).

If you thought the discussion on the last few pages was downplaying, it wasn't.

Don't act as if consoles are sold on performance alone. There are a variety of factors at play.

I'm not sure why it would be downplaying to suggest that Sony being able to show their exclusive titles at 4.2 TF tomorrow will take some impact out of MS finally showing Scorpio games. Or that the technical prowess of studios utilizing that power will come into play in showing the console. Or that the year gap between release will have no effect on Scorpio.

A discussion on adverse factors towards Scorpio isn't downplaying.

I'm not downplaying Scorpio. I just mean the impact of Scorpio graphic next year will be underwhelming because we will get use to 4.2TF graphic.
Think of it this way, if Nvidia stop making new card after 750ti, and they show 1070 this year then they release 1080 next year.
Which jump will have more impact?

But not everyone will be used to the neo. And thats only if all the games provide substantial improvement.

Much like me, I had a modest PC set up when I first got a PS4, but as time went on I wanted to experience the games with better fidelity and frame rates (don't get me wrong I'm very much in for a PS4 neo as I like Sony exclusives) but I've since upgraded my PC to an i5 6600k + GTX 1060 (I don't have a 4k TV so will ramp up all the other effects and still get rock solid frame rates)..

yea that's another side to the equation. Not just the hardware jump, but if Sony WWS puts out something that takes advantage of Neo like GTS or whatever, how much will Halo 6 impress everyone in Scorpio? Will it clearly show a big gap in effects after Neo has been the new hot stuff for a year? If Neo gets up to 5TF I think MS should go even higher. Really I think they should make Scorpio exclusives, but I get why they don't want to force users to upgrade. We'll see how both of them play out though. For better or worse, I'm kinda in the Sony ecosystem and will likely only branch to something from Nintendo in the handheld space.

Sony has a lot of work cut out for them in marketing that's for sure. I dunno what strategy will pay off more;

- releasing first and having the spotlight for a year
- releasing and becoming the most powerful

Doubling the framerate of UC4 would be mindblowing... but only if they're able. UC4 is utilizing the CPU to the very max. It will be very interesting to see.

Everything is possible, it depends how much things can be sped up. Most of game rendering time lies on the GPU.

"Very max" could mean that CPU works really hard for 10ms, while GPU does the rest in 20ms, providing a bit over 30fps (game is limitted to greatly framepaced 30).

30% better cpu and 230% better GPU can lower those timings really close to 16ms.

I think the Neo will ultimately be a failure because not many people will see the need to buy it. It won't have any exclusive content and they will still sell the PS4 alongside the Neo. I also think the games will only look marginally better. After the Neo, Sony will go back to the traditional console lifecycle or put more resources into beefing up PS Now.

The importance is the leap from the baseline which Scorpio will clearly be ahead.

Either way I'm looking forward to tomorrow with extreme curiosity.

What's a failure for you?

Sony isn't expecting it to do massive numbers according to their FY report.

Me too. I don't hope anything fail, but hope they still keep that traditional generation.

I think they've already confirmed they are. Something along the lines of "there will be another generation" and highlighting the benefits of fixed hardware and how iterative would erode that.

Howdy? Oh come on Sony. This has to have something Red Dead Redemption related happening. HAS TO!

Howdy! As you may know, PlayStation Meeting is happening tomorrow in New York City at the PlayStation Theater. It’s only open to members of the press, but we also wanted to open the invitation to PlayStation fans to watch live.
So here’s your invite! Join us at live.playstation.com tomorrow, September 7, starting at 12:00pm Pacific / 3:00pm Eastern.
And stick around after the presentation for a special episode of PlayStation LiveCast. See you tomorrow!

They aren't going to win back PC gamers who've jumped from consoles and I don't see how they'll stop someone that's considering a PC from getting one with iterations. Just seems strange.

I currently buy 100% of multiplats on PC just because of how huge a difference there is in quality, but if PS4 NEO can close the gap enough then I will start getting some multiplats on PS4.

Who know? Maybe the success of Neo send a wrong signal that we love iterative hardware make them double down on Neo 2 instead, like the sucess of Kinect to Xbox one.

Since this is a new business model i wonder what Sony expectations are .
Lets say they only expect 5% of there total sales from neo by the end of the gen .
From there they would try to improve on this next gen .
So it going to be interesting to see what would be a failure for them.

How likely do you think that is when:

A. Games aren't even required to be upgraded (beyond being 1080p)

B: You don't get a choice in what gets upgraded

For me, I think Neo is a one-off product for them to ensure PSVR has a console available which can run more demanding games than PS4 would have trouble running. Just a guess on my part based on one or two things I'd read in the past. Purely a guess and nothing more.

Then the expectation of 3rd party doing patches for Neo seems to be off.

Not really .
They have to make a effort to get things moving .
That does not mean they expect this to sell millions for a while.
For eg Sony putting a certain amount of effort into PSVR but they already said they don't expect big sales .

I disagree. This move brings consoles in line with other CE devices. The focus on ecosystems only makes these types of products more viable. Allow people to come in at different entry points and make money off of the services provided and the games sold on the platform. The idea that consoles can compete against every other CE device with the antiquated generation cycle is confusing. Yea, many aren't for the change, but this change isn't just about consoles. It's about viability in a changing world where you can get entertainment from various options at increasing levels of fidelity on an annual or semi-annual basis. How can a 5-7 year product continue to compete? I'm unsure. Something has to be done to keep consoles fresh and entice people to stick with the ecosystem going forward
