Super Mario Run announced for iOS (Android later), Dec 2016, Screens/Info in OP

Partnering with Apple for exposure seems cool and a good move for Nintendo, but I am sure Apple was knocking on Nintendo's door first asking them if they could bring something nice to their press conference.
"Timed exclusive" is also 100% a thing where money exchanged hands, no reason to do this unless this is paid for. But Nintendo can sure get something out of announcing this at the Apple conference for themselves.

Also, if they bring out the Fire Emblem game out like that, and it has stickers for whatever this message thing is that I never used, I will seriously consider upgrading my iPad, not even joking.

Yeah, I just can't believe Nintendo took money for a exclusive OS rights for one of their IPs, it's crazy when you think about it.

and yeah the sticker thing definitely pushed me to get a iOS device too.

It looks pretty good, and it's an almost surprisingly logical move by Nintendo. I'm in.
Nintendo needs to do this shit if it wants to survive in the current marketplace. The smaller super-core fans can't sustain it. I applaud them for it. I'd rather have Nintendo around in some capacity than not at all.

Any mega meltdowns yet? I love a good meltdown.

Sorry everyone. Apple fucked up with the new iPhone 7, took out the 3.5mm headphone jack and are giving you little wireless earbuds with shit battery life that you will lose the next day.

Nintendo back to being doomed.

It's not an endless runner.

And they're going to make bank with this.

And I hope it does because I love Nintendo (and they're certainly far from being doomed in anyway), but I see it being like their last mobile effort where it's huge on day one but there's a massive drop off a month later. I'm not an analyst so I'm probably wrong and maybe I'm projecting my general dislike for both auto and endless runners alike (Rayman Jungle Run did nothing for me), but looking at the app store games like this don't appear to be burning up the charts (at least not in the top 10). The closest thing to it appears to be Limbo (though I'm only looking at names so I could be completely wrong). Anyways, I'm going to stop replying to this thread as it was not my intention to start a flame war. Carry on.

EDIT: There looks to be something called Geometry Dash in the top ten?

This is great. Im sure it will be addictive as hell. I love that the jump bar at the bottom of the screen is huge, and that comment about being able to play with one hand by Miyamoto is kind of brilliant, in that its so obvious but very smart design at the same time.

Nintendo will bring in the $$.

This is excellent news. It being free with a one-time payment to add all the additional content is basically a perfect approach. It being a NSMB-style runner is predictable and boring af, but it looks competent. The Toad Rush-mode looks fun and is definitely the more interesting part of the game itself.

pokemon is something that could easily work on IPhones and iPads as well. It's turned based lol. I hope Nintendo puts it on mobile, I also got tired of Pokemon go after a week or so...

I didn´t say pokemon couldn´t work.

It could easily and they know it. But they won´t, they want you to buy a 3DS (NX soon). That´s the whole point of the mobile strategy.

I wonder how many resources this would take compared to a handheld game.

recently? probably more comparable to their ds turnout. and they're making far fewer than that era, at least so far. five mobile titles a year means they can probably still publish 12-15 games on nx per year.

Not sure why people are so surprised that the Mario game is an endless runner. Nintendo has already made it clear that they are not planning to just transplant that games onto mobile. If you want the traditional Mario experience you buy a Nintendo system.

This is exactly the kind of game I was expecting Nintendo to release on mobile.

Any figure out what OS is needed?

RM8 was saying his 5C won't work with it but that's supposed to support up to the current OS....

Very few things make my jaw drop, this was one of those...

At first I thought this was a joke thread since I just read the other post about Should Nintendo's next mobile be a runner... and hear it is...

I don't care about what platform/hardware it runs on - if the game is fun, I will get it. The only concern I have right now is if it has landscape mode, not sure about having such a short forward FOV with a platformer.

Day 1...

Thank you! Hrm, So even though iPad 2 can go up to it, it won't work on iPad 2? :/

Level design looks way better than regular "runners", so kind of looks interesting. I never thought I'd see the day, but here we are.

Only for iPhone, though. :(

I am trying to not be hyperbolic.

But Myamoto announcing a New Super Mario Bros endless runner for iOS might be the most depressing gaming announcement since the death of the Dreamcast that wasnt about someone dying.

Sad to see Nintendo come to this.

Putting Mario on the hands of millions more is great. Being an auto runner doesn't float my boat. As long as real Mario games keep coming out there's room in the world for both. The nsmb aesthetics suck.

It's not an endless runner, it's a runner just like those NSMB2 levels. Nintendo has been stating for a few years that it was moving to mobile and releasing smaller games that would raise brand awareness and attract users to their dedicated gaming console/games. A Mario Runner is the first thing that comes to mind given that criteria.

Great announcement. With Nintendo doing this they are effectively reaching the consumers who abandoned their ecosystem in favor of smartphone gaming. They can make their money on Apple (and eventually Google's) platform while using these "lite" experiences to convince people to jump back into their ecosystem... whether it's the NX or another experience.

It's good to see Mario (and Pokemon) looking more up to date thanks to the power of these smartphones but I can't wait to see what's coming with the NX.

the iPhone 7 is really powerful and if the NX offers performance anywhere near that and provide games that take advantage of the "to the metal" performance... the NX may provide an experience very similar to current gen consoles on the go.

Very exciting to be a gamer right now.
