Super Mario Run announced for iOS (Android later), Dec 2016, Screens/Info in OP

No (Nintendo and Mario fans) wanted this. Many hundreds of thousands will be happy to see Mario on a platform they enjoy. Many will be excited to play Mario for the first time

Exactly.

There's no way Nintendo was going to get me to buy hardware to play their games. That ship has simply sailed.

But I'll be happy to enjoy their software on a platform that I already carry around with me 24/7.

I think that is your area of concern. All the other elements are in this title. Doing it in a straight shot only enhances the chance you will get a high score on your next run.

All the other elements aren't what make it a runner though. Look at every runner out there and tell me what they have in common. Nintendo even put the word Run in this one. They all have that one thing in common and no Mario game until now has had it.

The profit margins on this game are going to be insane, it's 90% old art assets. It's probably going to make more money than the last 5 Mario games put together.

Yeah this isn't for me, but if it means exposing more people to Mario platformers, to push them towards traditional consoles/handhelds like Pokemon Go did, I'm ok with this.

No one expected or wanted that, but no one (or at least next to no one) wanted this either. There's plenty of other things they could've done with Mario that would translate well to phones with minimal retooling. Dr. Mario for one.
i want this...I want this a lot.

I miss Nintendo, but with a PS4 at home, it's all I really have time for. To jump back into Nintnedo games with hardware I already have (iPhone/iPad) is incredibly valuable to me.

It's not as deep as your typical Mario games, but we've seen Mario do wall jumps, flips and wall crawling in the previews so it's more than just your typical run and jump.

Yeah, no argument there. Was just using your post as another jumping off point about my ranting that Mario games have almost always been predicated on a level design that emphasizes continual movement in one direction anyway. Taking that control away certainly neuters the game but it doesn't necessarily remove the fun in timing everything perfectly for that perfect run.

The entire point of their mobile presence is to get people to buy their main games. They won't put full games on mobile.

The point of putting their franchises on mobile is to make money on mobile. They aren't putting full traditional games on mobile if it's not right for the platform.

I wonder if there could be a way to combine this with Super Mario Maker.
NX users could create runner levels for players to play on both NX and mobile. That could make this game an evergreen title.

The Fire Emblem mobile game is still coming though, right? It's not cancelled for this, right? Because - that is literally the only bad thing that could come from this.

It made too much sense not to happen - I'm more then fine with this.
Did the Sonic Runner make some money for SEGA?

I think some people need some serious reminders that the auto runner thing is already a thing they did in NSMB2.

Oh, I'm well aware but I'm also not a fan of any of the "NEW" SMB games with the WiiU game being the sole exclusion. I've already said that auto runners aren't for me but I also don't see Nintendo making big strides in the mobile market with a endless runner.

I am not surprised in seeing mario on smartphone, after their DeNA deal and the announcement of their biggest IP coming after miitomo.
But man, the reveal at the Apple conf with Miyamoto on stage...is something else!

What a megaton!

This after the pokemon GO boom and the Olimpic Rio celebration is creating such a brand awarness for them

I don't think you understand how many people play the original SMB, and are getting caught up in the runner terminology in comparison to new entries.

This isn't an endless runner. These are specifically crafted stages.

It's coming but it has been delayed to 2017.

It's not an endless runner.

And they're going to make bank with this.

Still coming, but delayed a few months. Coming out by March 2017.

Seems like the Runner will take the place of Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem, both of which have been pushed to next year.

Nintendo on mobile, to me, is like eating a tub of Ben & Jerry's. I'll buy it, I'll even enjoy it, but I'll hate myself for doing so.

It would be so cool if you unlocked Mario stickers for your text messages as you achieved certain milestones in the game.

Basically what happens with stickers on Miiverse, except people would actually use them.

But it isn't a real Mario platformer (I hope this doesnt sound like the " 3D world/land arent real 3d mario") but if you cant controll momentum this really wont feel link a mario game (even looking that trailers the short jumps looked weird). It just like a random iOS platformer with a mario skin.

It's like saying Pokemon Go exposed more people to Pokemon RPGs, when they're completely different games.

Have you played the Hitman/Lara Croft GO games? Or the Rayman games?

Have you tried playing the Deus Ex: The Fall game?

One works, one doesn't.

Because just like adapting stories from one medium to another, altering and modifying things to better suit that medium is smart. Distilling the core aspects of a franchise to a format that works well on mobile is smart

I'm not arguing that why they did isn't smart. It was smart to release an Ingress clone instead of a traditional pokemon title, as that better fits the instant winner bite sized gameplay of the mobile market. It is also smart to release an extremely pared down Mario title instead of a traditionally controlled platformer. Pointing out the very clearly designed simplicity of Nintendo's mobile offerings is a testament to their ability to read the mobile market, not the opposite.

Nintendo are being very smart by releasing games that require no investment and are comparatively easier to master. Mechanical complexity/depth and the mobile market simply don't mix in real time titles given the simplicity of input and what the market traditionally rewards, and Nintendo stock prices and success compared to their traditional releases are evidence of this.

Nah. A $40-$60 game where Nintendo gets to price the game high multiplied by tens of millions and you still get better chunk of the revenue (and profit) still delivers better rewards than a mobile game priced for cheap plus not getting much out of it because Apple gets the share of the pie.

It's still a great money-making machine for Nintendo though.

This disagreement was and is only about our differing opinions on what constitutes a "runner". Anything beyond that really isn't part of my shared opinion on the matter. We're merely going to have to disagree on this.

I don't think Nintendo's aim here is to make big strides in the mobile market. I just think their goal is to put out a quick, fun game that will promote their own brands and encourage sales of their own systems. Plus I can see this game doing well if the price is right. It's the kind of simplistic game that mobile gamers look for.

you are all acting as if nobody had played a mario game before, they will fall in love with it and go buy a nintendo console next day. While we console gamers look from this side of the fence casual mobile gamers see this like "oh yay no need to buy a nintendo console for a mario game anymore"

After playing those New Super Mario Bros 2 warp stages, Ive been wanting a Mario runner for a while, so I'm getting this for sure.

The best news for me though, is NO FUCKING MICROTRANSACTIONS!

Man this reminds me, maybe I should finally get that Rayman runner...

Yeah ever since i played those I felt like the blueprint for a Mario based runner was pretty obvious even though people consistently seemed puzzled by it.

They continue to use the lame NSMB art style. Come the fuck on, make a new style.

Every NSMB game has different visuals. NSMBU is the prettiest one. They weren't going to create a new style for something like this. They'll save that for the next full game.

It looks like this game uses a modified, stripped down version of Super Mario Maker. And of course the gameplay is most similar to this since Mario automatically runs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wI6wClmV8Y

Pokemon Go has already proven this to be false.
