Very disappointed so far with the Xbox One S. What's going on here?

UI lag has been a problem I've had with the system for a very long time. It's a laggy mess and don't dare press B on the main menu. Don't you dare!

I've put like 50 hours into Halo 5 and never once had an issue with it. My gut reaction is that you're missing a system and/or game update.

Sounds like MCC is acting normal lol

I don't need a chart, I play around with both of them on a nearly daily basis. While the Xbox One has some shortcuts to get to things, it's still feels sluggish and unresponsive as hell. Sometimes you have to go into a menu on PS4 but it's super fast and responsive. While technically you may be able to do something in less time on the Xbox One, the user experience is much worse.

Wait what were we talking about again?

Sent a message to a friend saying Hello takes 17 seconds in PS4.

Bullshit.

That no time to sent a message.

Source for this graphic?

There's no way that's true.

And its not you OP, the Xbox OS is sluggish. Can't speak to all of your audio issues though.

Yes I remember that test. For context, it was done at a time when the XBox OS was MUCH faster than it is now and the PS4 OS was defnitely slower at those particular tasks BUT it was the faster OS overall.

The Xbox One OS is faster than the PS4 OS. You can reach the most important stuff quicker than on the PS4. It can still fell less snappy but it is faster.

Believe it or not but since the OS update last year it is faster in all the most important aspects.

But I have both and it's not the case for me. I loathe the Xbone's UI.

Thanks, I'll do this after work.

Is there any kind of OS-wide reset I can do? I'd like to try doing that and then reinstalling the games.

Yes, you can do a factory reset or a factory reset that keeps your data. I'd try the latter as the first option, although I can't imagine you'd have much in the way of broken caches and databases so early on.
I think due to the way that games download, that redownloading them is unlikely to help.

I would get the NAT to Open as your first priority.

That is why I asked the source because there is something missing in these tests... or the graph is being used without any context.
But nobody shared the links.

BTW these are not the times the PS4 get for these specific tasks.

Same here. Luckily the great games allow me to look past it, but damn, I don't like navigating it one bit.

I don't remember a time when the PS4 OS was anything but quick and snappy, and when the Xbox wasn't slow. Xbox's separate apps, and app startup times for everything just doesn't allow for any flow. The left-nav has made some common things much easier to get to though, as has the PS4's new quick menu.

OP you pretty much listed, with the exception of Halo 5 which I've never played, all the reasons I returned my XO original after a week. Truly woeful interface, game installation and useability. Scorpio needs to smash it with the UI and have a clear advantage over PS4 if it's to have any chance of me dipping in.

A lot of this stuff sounds odd and the three of you are experiencing this?

btw: The twitch app is garbage.

No.

Yes.

Almost my exact experience thats why I sold mine. Worst console purchase I personally ever made. To each their own I suppose.

You guys without any issues, you are able to snap things without issue? I tried to start a twitch stream in MCC and the entire console locked up in the process. You are able to do this without any hiccups? I'm just baffled. That was the one thing I could repeat and consistently have issues with.

The Xbox One's UI is laggy and in comparison to the PS4's UI it feels inferior but it isn't as horrible as some folks on here are making it out to be.

I've never experienced any of the complaints the OP has mentioned. The snap feature does suck and MS should do away with it or improve upon it. MCC is well we know...MCC. I've experienced problems with party chat but that's because my NAT type was moderate. It's been NAT type 2 for awhile now and I haven't had issues since.

I'm on my Xbox One right now watching YouTube and pressing RB to scoot over to Community, OneGuide and Store is sluggish. But the UI has come along way from the metro style tiles we had at launch. "Shitting" on the UI isn't going to make MS make it any better.

We can discuss it, and bring it to their attention in other, more effective ways.

Not since the Last anniversary update. Suspend/Resume has changed. Maybe they (MS) did it for stability reasons, but the suspended game gets shut down a lot more frequently. Similar to BC titles. I remember they used to be suspended, but now are always shut down.

Some games have issues with suspend/resume, but to my knowledge have had issues since the start. Are you sue about the BC titles? I thought they never were able to be suspended.

the majority of your issues is Halo

Game Party chat thing is something you can disable, and you can do volume controls within the side bar. As for network errors... check your settings, connection etc. remember that party chat is p2p

..

I've had a lot of these issues as well. I'm really glad you posted this topic because I was actually considering getting an "s" in hopes that it would alleviate some of the problems with the sluggish UI. Guess not :(

As you've already had the same chat audio stuff answered (the XB1 system is better than ps4's, options are great) it really sounds like many of the rest are Internet related. DMZ that sucker if you have to and go wired.

Also, turn off suspend and resume. I've encountered all sorts of weird bugs and problems on both XB1 and PS4 with it on. For example Forza 6 would crash all the time, have multiplayer connection issues and pop up weird errors with suspend and resume on. Turning it off literally fixed every issue I was having.

Seriously, turn off suspend and resume.

The only thing I've ever snapped is the game dvr and the browser. Ive never tried to stream but I have played with people streaming with no issues on their end (forza not halo so i dont know if its a game specific issue). But Im in the preview program and I have never run into the issues you are experiencing on the default os.

You mean it's been "OPEN"?

You are correct. I meant it's "OPEN".

This is kind of disappointing to read. I am a satisfied PS4 owner but I've always thought about adding an Xbox One for some of the exclusives and just cuz I like to buy stuff. I always assumed that the UI and suspend/resume etc. but I guess I was wrong.

OS is disgustingly slow. It crashed the other day trying to open games and apps page. Took over a minute just to get there and see what games I had.

Holy shit. OP's experience is typical??? How do people stand for this? I've never played on and XB1 so I had no clue this is what owners put up with.

PS4 isn't perfect but no where near this bad. I only have a couple recurring UI problems: sometimes when coming out of rest mode I'll open YouTube and it'll get stuck on the logo so I have to quit the app and reopen. It also seems to keep forgetting to sign me into YT so I have to tell it to. I also have a problem where if I leave a DVD in the console for too long it won't work, it knows a DVD is in there but it won't read it so I just have to eject and put it back in then it's okay. Both of these problems are annoying when they happen but by no means a deal breaker. Although I do wish they wouldn't put recent games in the main menu, I'd rather they have their own drop down list.

Maybe you could actually contribute to the discussion meaningfully instead of rushing in with your sword and shield ready ?

OT: The Xbox One ui is one of the main reasons I dumped the system. Both the original and new os/ui were slow and unintuitive in my experience. Made the console painful to use for me personally.

Agree with this.
It almost aches to have to use mine. It's as slow as using my PS3 and that is slooooow.

My experience in general with the UI is that it is slow and unresponsive. The button presses not registering drives me nuts and it seems to be more of a problem now than it was in years past. With that being said sometimes the UI works flawlessly. Either way it's definitely a bummer and something I hope the Scorpio leaves behind.

Can't say that I've encountered any of the other issues the OP mentioned. I got myself and Xbox One S this past weekend and it's been fine for the most part.

Mic audio - is there not a way to adjust your own mic input to the console? One of our friend's mic is really quiet compared to everyone else. Does he have to buy that headset controller adapter to get that functionality?

When you bring up the guide (double tap the Xbox button) there should be a menu at the bottom if you have your headset plugged in.

Are you in Europe? I live in the UK and I have to set it to 50Hz for TV otherwise it stutters like crazy (for sports which is all I really watch on TV). However this means when I snap TV while playing a game it seems to run at 60Hz causing problems. I don't have this issue with the majority of web apps as they seem to be 60Hz or do something to sort it out.

But with regards to running a Twitch stream that doesn't seem normal as I have the standard Xbox One and it's fine to snap Twitch and play. Maybe the Moderate NAT is causing a problem I know it causes problems for some of my friends in voice chats and games. If this is the case they either opened the required ports (or forwarded them) in their router or put the console in their routers DMZ area (not sure the DMZ thing is 100% safe as it's fully open then).

With the mentions of disconnects it does sound like you could have some sort of NAT or network issue.

Have you checked to see if all the ports are available:
Port 88 (UDP)
Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
Port 80 (TCP)
Port 500 (UDP)
Port 3544 (UDP)
Port 4500 (UDP)

OP, some of those issues are typical, but some of those sound like you might consider either a factory reset or doing an RMA.

My day 1 xb1 doesn't have anywhere near as many freezes and crashes as you seem to imply(actually, I don't remember it crashing at all in recent memory), so either XB1S is very poorly made compared to the original or you got a bad batch.

I've never had a problem streaming through the snap app.

What universe is this where the Xbox UI is worse off than Playstations?

I haven't used an Xbox One/S, but I kinda took it for granted it was way smoother than the PS4.

I use it a lot to stream from time to time. The shitty twitch app snaps to the side and after selecting the options and confirming them(the app needs a couple of seconds to commit the setting or inputs, like I said "garbage app"), I can stream for hours and end the stream without problems.

Its not. Theres a whole bunch of variables we need to work out, that Halo 5 issue is completely new to me, works flawlessly on my machine.

OS is a little slow and i hope MS sort it out. The popout core menu is perfect though.

This was the preview version and it's faster now than it was in this graph. I don't believe it's been tested since firmware update on ps4, but this is the most recent, accurate account I believe is out there.

Start a party and invite 3 friends takes 20 seconds ? on Ps4 ?

i don't believe it . in any case it's not my user experience.

Hey guys,

My two friends and I are PS4 owners and recently decided to each pickup an xbox one s halo bundle. We played halo all the time on 360 and we recently felt the urge to play again. A few days after getting the consoles, we are already looking at returning them. I'm trying to figure out what's the deal. We've had a few issues and I will name a few of them and see if you guys could shed some light.

-Snapping things to the side is pretty much unusable. TV snapping stutters no matter what game I am playing. Twitch causes MCC to crash. Going from a snapped app to the main game is unreliable. It takes a few seconds for the main game to become responsive or it stays frozen altogether.

-Party chat. We frequently have the audio drop out and say there is a network error. We start a new party and everything is fine again.

-Party Chat. I will randomly get switched to game chat and vice versa. Very confusing in the middle of a match.

-Headphones. On PS4, when you route game audio to the headset it automatically mutes the sound coming from tv/speakers. Do you really have to mute your tv/speakers manualy on xbox one?

-Mic audio - is there not a way to adjust your own mic input to the console? One of our friend's mic is really quiet compared to everyone else. Does he have to buy that headset controller adapter to get that functionality?

-Headset audio dropouts. Game audio will randomly dropout, leaving only chat audio. Sometimes, the reverse happens. Sometimes both drop out. The fix is to remove headset from controller and plug it back in.

-Disk drive - while installing Halo 5, my friends disk drive was making a loud noise. His recording sounded like a washing machine.

-User Interface. This is the one I'm most dissapointed about. I expected Microsoft's prowess with software to be refreshing coming from the PS4, but it's extremely lacking IMHO. The UI is cluttered and extremely laggy at times. Button presses take seconds to register. Menu options can be all over the place.

-When installing Halo 5, the intall process froze multiple times for all of us and required us to pause/unpause the install to get it working again.

-I couldn't get my xbox one to change my tv channels. I thought this was a feature. Maybe this is my fault, but I thought it shouldn't be that hard.

HALO: MCC:

-Lots of freezes on startup. The microsoft studios logo will freeze everytime I startup. Sometimes the entire game freezes.

-After multiplayer games, it kicks you out instead of searching for another game.

HALO 5:

-When launching halo 5. It crashes on the splash screen back to the xbox home screen sometimes, requiring restart.

-Forge file browser. This is not showing as available for 2 of us. The third accesses it just fine. Mine was working one day and not the next.

-Halo reqs. Anytime one of my friends accessed his req's during warzone, the system says something like "Retrieving data", He was also never able to look at the previous game's scoreboard while waiting in the lobby.

-Forge maps. There are alot of maps that have moving parts of the level. These will stop moving completely in all parts of the map for many minutes at a time. This made maps unplayable.

-The game's graphics are disapointing. Is multiplayer 1080p? It looks low res at times with lots of aliasing and shimmering. On some maps, the environment textures lack any detail at all.

-Random disconnects during multiplayer

-"Can't reserve dedicated server" errors when starting games

Did we get a bad batch? Are these issues common? I hadn't heard any complaints like this before ordering.

I cant comment on all of those but I can confirm many of them.

-Snapping is indeed pretty much bullshit.
-User interface in general is stuttery
-Installs frequently get stuck
-Halo MCC is a fucking mess
-I've had my fair share of H5 crashes also
-Reqs frequently get stuck on retrieving data
-Moving forge pieces are notoriously finicky
-Most games on XB1 are not 1080p

Snap is broadly fucked.

All the rest of your issues I've never had. If it wasn't for the fact it was happening to all 3 of you, Id suggest network shenanigans

The thing is that it's not consistent, which makes it worse in my opinion. When all goes well everything is smooth, but from time to time you can have a simple command hanging for no apparent reason. Which makes the experience unreliable for the user, I'd rather adapt to a small permanent lag than having to swear at a screen once a week because it didn't do something fast enough.
Sometimes I blame it on the preview dashboard, but I've been using a second One with the public dashboard for a few weeks and it doesn't solve everything.

It's gone from being a console trying to cater to a bunch of different shit no one wanted in their game console, to focusing on games for the most part while still having to cater to some bullshit, revision after revision. They don't have their heads up their ass anymore, so maybe they get it right.

Yeah I don't know about that. One may argue whether people did or did not want the original vision (I did), but at least they had one. And they had a console that was good at multitasking and swapping from one app to another. Now I don't see the "focus on games", except that several non-gaming features are now broken. Granted I never use the party chat or invite functions, but it doesn't seem those work much differently than before.
I'm still waiting to be convinced that MS isn't in "panic mode" any more. They had a plan with the original one and it failed, but what's the new one ?

Is your XB1 power cord connected to the wall and not a surge protector? The XB1 has built-in surge protection and connecting it to surge protector will cause problems.

Ive never heard of this, ever. I've had both x1 and x1 S, and haven't had near the amount of problems as the op.

This isn't really true. A surge protector isn't going to do anything to harm it. Because it should be getting consistent power anyways.

However most 'surge protectors' only activate when their is a big spike and they trip the circuit on them. They aren't power conditioners or anything and even if they were it would do no harm to the xbox one power cable.

But it's an extra bullshit step for them to troubleshoot you through to waste more of your time.

The new dashboard update made it faster already last year. Still Xbox UI has problems.
Store is slow for me for example.

xDHxCIk.png

Using PS4 4.0, I just sent a hello message to my bud in 11 seconds, and that includes turning my body back and forth to my laptop to hit the stopwatch. [steps: start stopwatch, turn body, switch out of game, go up to messages, scroll to friend, type hello, send, appears on screen, turn body and turn off stopwatch]

So, no, I don't think this is accurate. And it's not like sending/typing is changed in 4.0, so even with 3.0 that's absurd. If I didn't have to scroll to my bud I could have beat that time.

I always found the UI on xbox one to be slow and laggy no matter what, a fresh format, being in the beta dashboard tests, honestly the older OS was better.

-After multiplayer games, it kicks you out instead of searching for another game.
They do this on purpose saying that it's like the old games, which is completely false.

It's definitely understood that my friend's mic outputs at a low volume. It's actually the PS4 headset. No one is arguing that. My issue is that the xbox doesn't provide any way for you to boost or adjust your mic level. Ps4 has this. Any chat app on pc allows you to adjust your mic transmit level. It's jsut something that is necessary sometimes. It's a basic feature and astonishing that the xbox one doesn't have it. People keep telling me there's a setting for it, but it's never an actual mic input setting. It's either headset volume or mic monitoring.

Calm Killer

In all media, only true fans who consume every book, film, game, or pog collection deserve to know what's going on.
There is no way in hell this is true. The PS4 is so snappy compared to the Xbox One.

Owning both and being a preview member for xbox one, I can say for me they are about the same.

As for the OP I don't really have an answer. Seems like a lot of little things that I have never experienced myself. MCC still has issues and chat can be affected by the mic/headset. Wish I could help more.
