The Jets-Bills game televised nationally by CBS and NFL Network generated a rating of 9.5 with a share of 18. The NFL trumpets those numbers as an increase of more than 20 percent over the average rating of 7.9 for each of last year’s Thursday Night Football games, several of which were televised by NFL Network only.

But before cracking open the champagne, consider this nugget buried in the release: Last year’s season-opening Thursday Night Football contest between the Broncos and Chiefs generated a 12.9 rating and a 24 share. Apples to apples, that’s a decline of more than 25 percent.

The addition of Twitter doesn’t move the needle all that much, with an added average audience of 243,000. As noted by Chris LaPlaca of ESPN, Monday night’s Steelers-Washington game had an average of 307,000 streams and the Rams-49ers game had 309,000 — even though ESPN (unlike Twitter) wasn’t streaming its games on phones.

In Week One, the ratings for Monday night’s games declined in comparison to 2015, as did the ratings for the opening night of the season and the first Sunday night game of the year.

Has anyone done analysis on relative taunting penalties for black players vs. white players? b/c anecdotally feels pretty much like a "Appearing to Celebrate while Black" penalty. Feel like JJ Watt or Rodgers could whip it out and swing it around after a sack and the refs would be like "oh those guys...leaders and funny" but if a black player does a private fist pump it's equivalent to a targeted killshot.

I also love that doing the fist pump is the same as literally the most heinous, intentional, injuring actions you can take on the field. NFL is such a cracker-ass league.

At Sunday’s Oakland Raiders game, Derek Carr (not actually Derek Carr) and Khalil Mack (not actually Khalil Mack) had a disagreement in the stands. The nature of the dispute is unclear, because the video starts with a puzzled Mack watching Carr get into a stance before Carr jabs his hand right into Mack’s face.

This move did not work. In fact, it angered Mack enough to punch Carr. And then Charles Woodson (not actually Charles Woodson) jumped in.

Tim Brown (not actually Tim Brown) advised Carr to stay down. He did not, walking away in a daze.

Eagles are underdogs here I'm expecting a Bears W. He did great last week but we're still putting a rookie QB out there.

Lotta Eagles ballwashing happening on this pregame show. They're really talking up Wentz, so seems perfect for a primetime implosion
