hell, watching the most recent Gundam series in Iron Blooded Orphans, even the lead for that show actually kissed the girl who liked him long before we got to it happening for either choice here, which should say enough given the lack of focus on romance in that franchise compared to Macross

Well to be fair, you have to go back to the original to find a Macross TV series that resolves its romance plot. Frontier was a giant tease and 7 didn't give a fuck.

Frontier seemed like a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation (potential romances involving multiple characters usually are though, as some fans are bound to be unhappy either way). That said, I would've thought the ambiguity of the original series would sit better with viewers than the way the "what if" movies chose to end it.

series:
Alto: "Ehh, I can't choose! You're both my wings!"

alternate continuity films:
IIRC, Alto picks Sheryl, but then vanishes following the final battle while Sheryl's left comatose.
I don't see much point in acknowledging Kawamori's clarification on what happened after that, as something as important as that was exactly the sort of thing that should be included in the story one wants to tell, not tacked on long after it's over (but, since I don't care about the films anyway for a number of reasons, I'm not as invested in invoking Death of the Author theory for this issue).

...But then, given the reactions to how something like Inception ended, ambiguity probably isn't something that most audiences can handle, and that's without focusing on something as heated as romantic pairings.

The love triangle between Basara, Gamlin and Sivil resolved quote naturally. Sivil knew she couldn't compete so she left the galaxy.

Lol. Yeah I keep telling people Mylene really isn't in that love triangle. Basara's just not into her and never got into her, Mylene just has a stupid crush on Basara. Even though I think her common sense does kick in and she likes Gamlin, she just can't 100% focus on him for some odd reason. Sivil was a wasted character though. I actually did like him with her, they just barely interacted with each other towards the end.

Considering how much Alto starts focusing on Sheryl in the original series when he finds out she's about to die does kind of tell you how much he actually likes Sheryl. Sheryl had the kind of access to Alto that a lot of people really don't and the same can be said for Sheryl with Alto. Sheryl opens up to him a lot and I think there's more depth to that relationship. Ranka mainly just got into Alto because the dude looked pretty. They have a very endearing and respectable friendship, but Alto doesn't view it as more important than what he has with Sheryl. The dude spent his birthday with Sheryl, that should tell people enough about who he likes more and trust me Sheryl didn't exactly put a gun to his head. She just understood him well enough to talk to him and give him what he really wanted. Sheryl gave him an open sky to fly through, Ranka just baked his ass some cookies.

Towards the end I wanted to hang Hikaru for how he was treating best girl Misa. They dragged that triangle out well passed its natural conclusion because it was quite obvious the dude loved Misa when she left for earth to speak to her dad. You don't just send a secret heartfelt farewell through morse code to some random fucking stranger. Dude loved her, period. His scenes with Misa had a lot more emotional weight and sincerity than his scenes with Minmay.

Hmm, didn't this apply to Ranka too though? IIRC, she wound up inadvertently being the one to set him on the path to joining the SMS specifically even before he graduated from his academy, plus there was that mission on Galia 4 (which coincided with his birthday, honestly need to rewatch the series after so long, but I remember obligation as part of joining the SMS and the opportunity to fly somewhere with real skies taking priority of spending time with either Sheryl or Ranka) where she bought him the time needed to take to the skies with that impromptu performance after the Zentradi locked the place down (basically her birthday gift to him, IIRC). At the same time, though, I do remember that Sheryl being present was the reason the SMS were called in for that mission to begin with.

This is not to undermine the significance of Sheryl's impact upon his life, of course. There's no denying that he was one of the only people to care so much about Sheryl after her fame started to fade, and her health along with it. I can also agree that it was different things that first led the two of them to take interest in Alto before exploring things in greater depth (how he carried himself seemed to do it for Sheryl after tracking him down to reclaim an important keepsake as her first priority, and indeed, stumbling upon a guy she found physically attractive was the case for Ranka).

...The way Frontier did things really does make for much more interesting discussion than how Delta's handled its triangle (a very generous choice of words, given how Mirage hasn't gotten to do or say much of anything).

It seems like Alto did join to protect Ranka, I just think there was more of an emotional component with Sheryl though. I always say he loves both, but I just feel that there's a different level of love with Sheryl though. It's the love that he can't explain and runs away from, but when he thought he was going to lose Sheryl he pretty much devoted himself to her.

Is this seriously how it will end...? With one episode left?

SEASON 2/MOVIE IT IS.

Kawamori truly mastering the art of making ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥

Mikumo is Sharon Apple, this love triangle is just fucking dog shit though. This finale better be grand cause they just got rid of the big invasion fleet in 20 seconds.

Last episode is going to be rushed as fuck. RIP love triangle, if it ever existed. If Lady M really is Minmay, and they found the Megaroad-1, wonder what the others are up to?

i'm really wondering how the last episode will go... it honestly feels mid season and one episode is a pretty tall order to resolve everything satisfactory.

i hope whatever cameo happens, it's longer than the 5 secs Isamu got.

All anybody needs of Isamu is 5 seconds. I want a Misa cameo, but eh, that shit ain't happening.

Did they actually spoil Re:Zero?

Nice use of Do You Remember Love? "I love you soooo".

And I guess Minmey is Lady M. Boy did she change if she's all mad scientist and making clones of 10,000 year old dead women.

SUPER PACK BOYZ.

Also pick up the 1/72, its a great kit.

It started off so well, but this will never be remembered as "as good as Frontier." It's at least better than Macross II, but that's not hard. I still need to see Zero, but it can't be worse than this.

was already better than 70% of Frontier. Yet here we are fronting like Mirage and Arad still have a chance.

So who got shit on most, Mirage or Ranka? It seems like a pretty fair competition to see who takes the most and worst Ls.

At the very least Ranka got a fuck ton of screen time and was developed as a character. It once looked like she was going to eclipse Sheryl in idol popularity and briefly Sheryl even became jealous of her, but she pulled through. Alto just didn't like her that way but he still spent a lot of time with Ranka though. Why do people act like Ranka took a big ass L? Mirage's L is fucking huge by comparison. She's supposedly a main character but the show makes god damn sure she's just there to make sure Hayate goes right back to Freyja. She could've spent some time with Hayate last ep, but she didn't instead of doing what she wanted she just tells the guy to go hang out with Freyja. She can't hang with Hayate for 5 minutes? Ranka never got shit on like that. Plus Ranka had friends, SMS crew loved Ranka. By comparison we barely she Mirage talk to half of Walkure, she got better but she's still mostly tied to Hayate and Freyja. They don't even give her any god damn hobbies. Messer's death was good but it just came too early in my opinion and there weren't enough moments like that afterwards either. It's not as good as A Roy's death but better than Michael's since it was not needed.

i can't wait for super packs and more delta toys to come out =)
yeah, i was wondering if Arad is actually going to get together.

Mirage or Ranka? i would say Ranka so far!

GG? Yeah, but that part was actually skipped in the last episode. Fans were pissed.

ep.20 recap
Ok now it makes sense. Even Minmay got the shit smacked out of her in DYRL. The thing is at the end of Frontier they were all still very close friends, Ranka just couldn't accept the fact that she lost out to Sheryl, but all three of them care about each other a lot. I think there's a level respect there that you can't really see with Misa and Minmay or with Mirage and Freyja. It wasn't rare to see all three of them spending time with each other, which you can't really say about any of the other ships barring Gamlin, Basara and Mylene.
To be fair, the colony was under attack moments later and they needed Ranka to sing but she was still too out of it, hence Sheryl smacking her. Plus, Ranka slaps her back by the end of the series when Sheryl's the one doing the moping instead.
Ranka x alto x Sheryl wasn't exactly some one sided thing and I think Ranka gave as good as she got. I can't say the same for the Delta ship.

Quite. The lack of effort put into creating much of a dynamic in Delta has been disappointing.
I honestly think that there's a level of respect between Ranka and Sheryl that just isn't there between Freyja and Mirage. Mirage doesn't hate Freyja at all, but I don't think there's much of a bond there. She's nice to her cause Mirage is a nice person and she knows Hayate cares about her. I don't see those two just randomly going shopping or whatever though or introducing her to her family or anything I just can't see them being hang out buddies just based on their limited interaction.

Wow what an ending.

gonna need time to process what i just saw.

Who's ready for the theatrical version, Kawamori sure is!

I wonder if the theatrical version will be a alternate take on the series, or a epilogue instead. Series was such a high point halfway, then slowed down, then ends in such an artistic fashion.

Havent watched it... Whats the verdict?

It manages to be Code Geass, Evangelion, Macross all in a single ending.

This is a false statement. Frontier's final episode had one of the most badass combat sequences in Macross.

If you wanna ignore all the alcohol you need to disinfect your brain of all the stupid shit that happens in Frontier from Grace to Alto and more. Sure. I don't think i ever recovered after how stupid Frontier was, regardless of how much i entertaining it was at the times.

Flashy is cool until you don't have any more substance to go off of and just make everything a miliota weapons festa for 30 minutes.

So I watched the first 7 episodes but then school got busy and I never got back into it. Guess I'll finish it now that it's done.

Welp.... Hayate dont even give any fcuk over Mirage kokukaku lol. She is just left behind alone there.O_O

The final battle also makes Roid become jobber lol when the white knight stab him from behind lol.

.....so..... Who is Lady M now?
