what jrpg are you playing right now ?

I've been playing Ni No Kuni. I'm about 15 hours into it. I'm really enjoying it. I find it really really trippy at times.

After I beat Ni No Kuni, I'm going to start playing Dragon Quest VII, than hopefully by than World of Final Fantasy will come out, so I can play that immediately.

I'm about 12 hours into Suikoden 1 for the first time. This game is great, as a fan of rpgs with a lot of characters to choose from I'm don't know why it took me so long to play it. I'm surprised how much I like the writing. A bit simple at times but I wasn't willing to play Suikoden II without knowing the backstory.

You made a good choice. Nothing irritates me more than people saying to skip Suikoden 1 in order to get to "the good one." The first game is a really short game by the JRPG standards (around 20 hours IIRC) and is a great introduction into what turns into an amazingly well fleshed out continuity in the 2nd and 3rd games.

Have you never played any of the Suikoden games before? If so I envy you. They aren't all 5-star classics like 2 is, but all 5 of the main entries are great in their own ways.

I rented Suikoden 3 for a couple days when it came out and was totally lost so I know pretty much nothing about the series beside each game having 108 characters. With how much I like the first so far I can't wait to get into 2. I like Building up my army and base, as well as maintaining a well curated bathhouse.

Now excuse me, I have to break into a Prison.

Pokémon Platinum... if that counts. It surprisingly great. I've been told Gen 4 was the "worst" Gen for Pokémon, but I'm liking it quite a bit.

Started Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 2.

I'm falling in love with the series. The self aware humor is great.

So TMS#FE on Wii U and Rebirth 2 on Vita.

After Rebirth 2, which I'll def finish before TMS#FE I'm thinking of trying the Ys series for the first time maybe just do P3P.

So many choices.

I haven't played the Harmony version but I've heard complaints about it compared to PS1. No world map, loading time, screen transitions interrupt the music, a worse translation.

.

Yep those two points in particular really buged me too.

Other than that started parasite eve 2(loosely a jrpg i guess.) Looks wise that game has aged incredibly, some of the pre-rendered backgrounds are stunning.

I just picked up Atelier Sophie on PS4 and Dragon Quest VII on 3DS. I'll probably knock out Atelier first and play DQ on the side then switch.

Currently wrapping up the third chapter in Trails in the Sky: FC and enjoying it quite a lot. It's still very slow in the story department, but I like where it's going.. hopefully the pace will pick up a bit in the last chapter.

Next up might be SC (just got it in a sale) or I should finish SMTIV before Apocalypse arrives...

Playing through Tokyo Mirage Sessions, which I enjoy way more than I thought I would. Finishing up Chapter 5, so I've got a ways to go. DQVII, or SMTIV:A will be next afterwards, which mean Hyrule Warriors goes on the back burner for 3DS playtime. Thinking Colour Splash will have to wait a while.

Pokémon Platinum... if that counts. It surprisingly great. I've been told Gen 4 was the "worst" Gen for Pokémon, but I'm liking it quite a bit.

I think that's just because Diamond and Pearl were so slow. The region and designs were on point, and HG/SS were the best in terms of remakes. Very solid gen to me

I've played all of the games up to 5 (it's my next big RPG playthrough!) but I couldn't find one single thing redeeming about 4. It's one of the worst RPGs I've ever played, and I've played quite a bit ;)

Suikoden 1 is a pretty good game though, it's fast paced and there's never a dull moment, and the concept of collecting characters was very novel. The second game is a masterpiece but the first game is absolutely worth playing!

Started Digimon: Cybersleuth. It's been a slow start but I think I am going to like it. Fun combat, good music and good presentation.

I prefer Suikoden 1 to 2. I love the pacing of it. Everything happens really fast. Suikoden 2 makes you wait longer. It feels like it just took 1 and stretched it out sometimes. The father and son on different sides of a war dymanic was more interesting to me than anything in 2. The motivations of some of the major characters in 2 never made much sense to me. 1 has more challenge than 2. (It wasn't much but at least it had more) 1 has better music than 2. The war battles were better in 1 because in 2 they were all scripted which meant they just took long without amounting to much. I prefer that the cast of 1 were all older adults. (Cleo, Pahn, Gremio, Flik, and Viktor are all 25+) That makes it stand out among all other RPGs including Suikoden 2. 2 had a ton of translation errors, was glitchy, and froze on me.

So yeah, anyone skipping Suikoden 1 is bad.

Playing Tokyo Mirage Sessions and after 9 hours I am at the point where I have to say: I am having a great time.

Sometimes it is really hard with those JRPGs, you know you will like the game, but when you don't find the time and the first hours are splitted up in short sessions, you don't really get into those games.

Going to finish it now, although I don't know what will be my next JRPG. I still have FFX-2 and Trials in the Sky SC installed, but probably will wait for World of Final Fantasy.

Hoo boy. IIRC there's five chapters total, but still. yeah.

I reckon you'll be glad you have SC ready to go. ;)

Digital Devil Saga on PCSX2! Runs perfectly at 8x native resolution and 60 FPS. There's that weird shadow bug, but it stops bothering you soon (apparently, running the game in software mode fixes this issue). The game is still as good as I remember. I'll figure out the story too this time... I hope. Also, really nice music.

Started Dragon Quest 7 for the 3ds... it is truly a blast.

Finished Overclocked and Record Breaker both last week. The 3ds/Vita are perfect for RPG's in general but the fact that they are backlog machines for JRPG's is great.

The first one is the one you want, yes. Grandia II is more similar to games like FFX or ToS and 3 is a mess.

I haven't played the Harmony version but I've heard complaints about it compared to PS1. No world map, loading time, screen transitions interrupt the music, a worse translation.

For Grandia, I might be in the minority, but I would say start with the first one and just play the first one. I couldn't get into the characters and story of the second.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will try Grandia and be sure to let you know how it turns out to be for me :)

Yeah, it was really hard to believe it was just MIDI.

Twenty hours into Ni No Kuni. Loving it so far. I just
got my dragon as my transport, it's so much easier flying around to places.

I know lot of people hate the battle system but I happen to love it.

Three hours into Trails of the Sky FC. I had made it maybe halfway into the game over a two year period but decided to start over because I barely remembered the story (which to be fair, isn't all that compelling to begin with).

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth

About 8 hours in. I'm a huge fan of P3/P4 and usually I'm down with first-person dungeon crawlers, but still, it needed some time for me to get into Persona Q. It starts to get fun now, as I start to know the dos and don'ts.

Final Fantasy 13. I have avoided it for a long time, because of the negativity talk.

I'm not against linear games, so I didn't understand why people shit on this game's linearity until I played it two weeks ago and holy shit it's bad

I've spent hours grinding and exploring the actual first(and only?) open area in the gran pulse which is probably way past half of the game and here my opinion so far

Pros:
+I like the battle system ALOT
+crystarium system

Cons:
-I don't mind linearity, but the linearity in this game bothered me. most of the areas and the maps before gran pulse looked bad, uninspired and annoyingly narrow.
-characters unlikable for the most part. the best ones are Fang and Sazh and even them I hardly care about them
-the music isn't bad, but I simply didn't like what I heard so far. I usually look for good games music on youtube or download it, but so far not a single OST gave me the urge to do so.
- monster/enemy designs are hot garbage. i'm baffled how can monsters designed managed to be this bad and laughable.
-the story isn't so hot so far.
-playing half of the game without the ability to customize my team and the constant forced change change...so annoying.

Not sure if it counts as an rpg, since it's more action than the others in the series, but started Drakengard 3.

Aside from the frame rate issues it's pretty damn good so far.

The combat system is on point and light years ahead of what it was in the first two games. Most, if not all, of the cumbersome and annoying aspects of the first two games (which those games were loaded with to the brim) are gone. They basically cut out all the fat.

The story, characters, humor, various quirks etc. are exactly what I would expect from a Taro Yoko game. Loving all of it.

Zero is such a great character, really dig her design too.

Finished Suikoden 1 today, Great game. As someone who like's to say I love the 16-bit Square games I made a huge mistake skipping this series. The story moves, probably the least "down-time" I've ever seen in a jrpg. Music was amazing throughout, lots of great characters. I'm hesitant to jump right into the sequel cause I don't want to burn out - on the other hand I want to get in while the people and events of S1 are fresh in my mind.

Some cool gameplay stuff too, why doesn't every turn based-RPG fire off your heal spells at the end of a round if you clear out all the enemies before you healers can cast them.

So I just finished Suikoden 1 for the first time. I will be playing Suikoden 2 after I finish Wild Arms 1.

I thought Suikoden 1 was okay... I wasn't that impressed. The story was very generic and I found none of the 108 stars particularly interesting. Translation seemed stilted and sloppy, very of the era. Game certainly looked old as hell. The 6 character party was cool, as were the army battles, but I found the combat very easy and breezed through the game. The random battles were too frequent. The game also has weird inconveniences, like having to go so long without the ability to run and having to sacrifice a rune slot for it. Navigating the castle for all the management was cumbersome and the game pretty much requires a guide to get a lot of the characters. I'm not a fan of using guides to play RPGs but I would never have figured out how to get a lot of those characters on my own.

I had been playing bravely default for the past month. Got to right near the end of chapter 4.
but had to side quest my way towards the vampire class, beat the six dragons, now invading his castle
and then Dragon quest 7 came out. So I am playing dq7.

It didn't feel generic to me because I can't think of another RPG I played where I was leading and building my own army. Also the core of the main cast all being over 25 made it feel unusually mature for a jrpg. How do you feel about Wild Arms? That's the game I found very generic, and slow (battles are in slow motion), and ugly. (Even when it came out, that 3D did not look good)

Of course you wouldn't get all the characters on your own. I've never gotten close to them all and I've replayed it many times. So what? It's not a big deal. I hope you didn't use a guide. The main fun comes from finding characters on your own.

Still plunking away at Trails of Cold Steel 1, 50+ hours in. Lots of good changes from Trails in the Sky, but I think I like the characters and story of Sky over Cold Steel, though Cold Steel is still really good.

Laura is best bae.

Digital Devil Saga update:
Why can't all games be like this? Great gameplay AND great story. The only issue I have had so far with this game is that sometimes it doesn't let you play the way you like. I had to grind for about an hour to get one of those Expel spells to beat a boss (
Jinnana
). As I said the gameplay is really nice so, I wasn't bored or anything, but I wish it would just let me play the way I want. I wasn't underlevelled or anything, I needed one specific spell.
