Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

This scumbag argument to me is like those Goosebumps books that let you choose your ending. Sorry for the spoilers but none of the choices ended well. You're either a scumbag or you enable scumbags due to your cowardice/greed/ignorance/lack of reading comprehension. Pick your sin.

why would there be a good ending for supporting a dude actively trying to hurt minorities in our country

Palmer Luckey is a proud and outspoken brony.

This is the most fucking bizarre periphery demographic I've ever seen.

But should we condemn the misinformed and resort to name calling or should we strive to educate and inform?

I don't think its wise or will help those in the long run to instantly resort to calling someone a scumbag if they just flat out don't know who they are voting for. Believe it or not there are many who don't pay attention to politics and just hear from those around them "Trump is who I'm voting for because I always vote Republican" and thus vote that way.

We should strive to help them see whats really going on and insulting someone is the quickest way to make someone shut you out. Don't get me wrong, someone who openly says I love trump because he is anti-immigration or a white supremacist should be condemned. But we should be careful to instantly result to insults over education.

That's what gets me about the defense he's getting in this topic. If you don't think he's shitty for supporting 8chan memes, if you don't think he's shitty for supporting Trump, then you should at least think he's shitty for the rhetoric he posted. That shit is straight up vile. The only attempt I've seen at a defense for it has been "that was a joke."

Being reluctant to call someone a scumbag or shitty person =/= defense of said person. It's an attempt at being open-minded, so as to understand something you are basically dehumanizing otherwise. We need more critical understanding, less, 'I know why this person says/does/supports this, it's because they're a scumbag'.

Who are we to belittle and minimize people who are different than us so much, the police?

Something else too is that 8chan is the home to GamerGate and also hosted real life child pornography. The site was even delisted from Google for CP.

That site is filled with scum and low-lifers. Anything that comes from there is never good and should never be supported.

John Carmack has spoken publicly about Ayn Rand and Objectivism multiple times over the years.

Extremely upsetting news about Palmer if true. Makes me feel pretty slimy for owning a Rift.

look, i have a real hard time believing that there's some segment of america out there just waiting to be educated on why trump is an ass. with the election cycle in full swing and how much of a circus the media has been over his every move it's hard to believe that someone voting for trump doesn't have a pretty good idea of what they're getting themselves into.

I feel much more comfortable with my nagging dislike of this man in interviews. I knew there was something I didn't like about him.

I don't disagree that there can be a multitude of reasons somebody could vote Trump without being a bad person at all, but my point Krejlooc was agreeing with was that Palmer's comments and what he's liking on Twitter would probably classify him as a "bad person" to most normal people outside of enthusiastist gaming. Probably even more so if Trump wasn't running, tbh.

I'd feel completely different about this topic if it was just "Oh we worked out Luckey might be voting Trump, let's expose him for his political beliefs". It's clearly far, far more than that.

Palmer was a gamergater as well

But the thing is.....there is. Me an you and everyone on GAF get's on a computer almost every day and reads thread, and reads the internet. There is a staggering amount of people that don't.

Listen I will never advocate for blatant painting of an entire group of people in a certain light. Everyone is an individual and we should be striving to help one another and lift each other up. We shouldn't be trying to tear one another down and be non forgiving. People can change and they can grow.

At the end of the day "Us vs Them" is ALWAYS a dangerous path to go down. Always. Each person is different and is a victim of the circumstances they grew up and were raised in. We should strive to educate and help those around us.

sure. but it's not just on the internet. it's on the tv. it's in the newspapers. it's everywhere. and i find that a lot of times, if you peel back their reasons on voting for trump, you get to a bit of a rotten core.

I find it funny that the Zuckerbergs' latest philanthropic endeavor just popped up on my news feed

It's fucking sad that with everything available to him in life, Luckey is in bed with shitheads

I totally understand that, but the point I'm driving is that doesn't make 'most people's' assessment any less wrong and short-sighted or lazy. But that's a far deeper discussion than the scope of this thread.

I should go to sleep but I feel like I'm going to miss the shit storm

This is true.

Like you said, many people don't know a fraction of what GAF knows, because they don't follow the news as closely. In their ignorance, they may even believe that the media, itself, is lying — the result of living in their own little echo chambers.

That doesn't make them bad people. It makes them ignorant. Naive. Misled.

Rather than tarring and feathering everyone who has a backwards worldview or a misinformed position — rather than casting them out and driving them underground where they'll just breed and multiply — we should try to engage them in dialogue.

Some won't listen. But at least they'll have had the chance to see something they might not ordinarily. Those of us who follow the news and know what's going on have an obligation to bring these issues to the attention of others.

It's certainly going to sour a shit ton of developers towards making content for the platform.

This is not very good news for VR.

Thanks Palmer.

Their platform isn't very good for the overall health of VR. Developers should support open or cross platform apis for their development. If this has the unintended side effect of pushing developers away from their walled garden, then that's an overall win for VR.

The thing about the endings is that they are generally pretty brutal for the characters involved but I doubt Trump will face anywhere near as much of a punishment given how he's brushed off mounting attacks on him and his foundation(s).

I'm sorry, you mean well but I have little sympathy. "Scumbag" is about as soft a barbed form of name-calling I can think of. A lot of these people have shown that they don't care when they're shown increasing evidence of the effects of placing Trump in any officious authority position could bring to a lot of decent people in this country. They don't want to be informed or educated.

We've moved past compassion for those supporters who do so out of desperation at this point, and believe you me, I humored the idea for a long time that some of his supporters were those who felt like they were being left behind. They now know how a lot of other people felt their whole lives.

Well he clearly isn't watching that show for its messages. Maybe he just really wants to fuck those horses.
We should prop up a huge cardboard box with a stick, and put a horse inside it as bait.

Then when the horse-fuckers come, the trap is triggered, and the Nazis will be safely contained!

edit: actually, wait, this is a terrible idea... that poor horse
