ReCore getting a free 30min trial today on XB1 & Win10

Just completed it last night. A 30 minute trial is plenty to get a taste of the combat and platforming.

The platforming evolves, becoming more demanding and varied as you progress, so if you're into the platform mechanics with the trial then I whole heartedly recommend it, you should have a lot of fun and be challenged. It's one of my favorite platformers in years.

The combat feels mostly the same throughout, so while there is color matching with different ammo types and you can switch out bots to fight with you the encounters never feel significantly different despite the variety of enemies you run into over the course of the game.

If you're into exploration then you'll like it as you find the dungeons and get more prismatic cores. If you're the type who likes to make a beeline to the end then you're going to be upset when the game makes you go back out into the world to find more prismatic cores in order to finish the game.

Never thought I'd see the day when Microsoft would have a demo that has a shorter shelf life than a Nintendo digital title.

What does that mean?
30 minutes is a decent length for a demo.
What's the shelf life for a Nintendo digital title?

Huh, downloading the trial on the Windows 10 Store doesn't allow choosing the install drive. Back to switching this manually.

I'm glad to hear about the corresponding major update. I'm still unsure about a full purchase because of the end-game design, but the performance issues definitely factor(ed) in.

The funny thing is the negative reaction was mainly reviewers. I feel like most people who've played it really enjoy it who weren't reviewing it, no idea why that is.

I'm guessing if we were reviewing it it'd score lower also due to some technical issues, but in the end it's a ton of fun.

Definitely. The people I know have all enjoyed it in spite of the flaws. Personally I'm really intrigued by the RPG elements.

You get achievements through this.

The time restriction is on the system level, so you're basically just playing the game normally otherwise.

Playing on an SSD. Didn't catch the initial ingame loading time, but loading screens were all shorter than 10 seconds. Includes crawler -> granite steps and steps -> basin.

That was ..... something... i guess
out of these 30 minutes
...5 minutes spent on initial loading
... the another 5 spent on various laodings of Xbox app
....which crashed ... so it needed anothe 5 to get actually into the game
... ingame res locked to 1280x720 :-( and ingame loading superfast

as for the game itself platforming is really nice , combat is serviceable ... overall I kinda like it
although the experience with the store/xbox app was bad enough to never ever consider buying something in Win10Store ... even if its masterpiece

Is the resolution issue because it's a trial? I'm able to play at a higher resolution.

Also, if you hadn't used the Xbox app yet prior to trying ReCore, then it would take more time for everything to sync and link. After that, it's fairly smooth.

I was locked to 720 as well and couldn't understand why. I didn't even have an option for 4K. Is this an issue with the trial version of the game?

i guess its a trial thing

well thw xbox app was fast on second try but for some strange reasonit crashed couple times .... but why the hell i should use xbox app when i am already logged in with the same account in the store ... just a winstore/uwp mess ..... might probably buy the game if it ever hits some actual PC store and not a store/platform which looks like bastard child of XboxLive and AppleStore with featureset worse than old 2004 green steam and requiring two logins of the same account

I think the initial startup links the game with your Xbox app (and Xbox Live) account. Now that you have it set up, you shouldn't see that process anymore. The only thing you might see is when the game boots, it will sync up your game save. I usually see this when switching between playing on the Xbox and PC.

Probably the whole training area and little dungeon, not bad for a demo I guess...

This is a great idea, maybe more people will pick it up...I want to see more Joule, she is a good new heroine IMHO.

It's the full game. You do as much as you can do in thirty minutes.

Which, as an owner of the game, won't be a lot. But it will give you a taste of the controls and gameplay mechanics to an extent. I think is kinda smart of Microsoft. Almost all the reviews were glowing about the first hour, so by giving everyone the first half hour, you're theoretically seeing the best part of the game as a tease.

I'm quite a few hours into the game and I'm loving it. It really is the closest thing to Zelda and Metroid for the Xbox as we're ever going to get.

I think in the first 30 min you can easily do the first dungeon and going back to the Crawler. Wich show enough how the game overall is imo. Maybe abit light on the platforming in the first 30 min. But still.

well it doesnt even provide me option above 1280x720 .. but doesnt matter anyway , the timelimit is done and I have no intention to ever open windows store again

Is this trial like EA Access trials where when your time is up, you cant launch the game anymore until you own it

Or is it like Rise of Tomb Raider where you can start over and play the 30 mins again?

Just tried it out.

Damn, this game sucks... a lot. The artstyle is pretty ugly and the game just doesn't come together visually at all. It's a really ugly, in-cohesive looking game. The animations are sub-par, often janky. The story seems to be "don't give a shit" tier.

I can usually forgive all of that but the main combat loop is a snooze, boring and seems super simplistic. I literally just sorta held the right and left mouse buttons and killed everything, including the first "boss", if you want to call it that. The lock-on system just doesn't work on a mouse and keyboard. I feel like I have less control and it doesn't really add anything to it so far. I couldn't find an option to turn it off.

But yea, 30 minutes of holding the right mouse button and left mouse button. No thanks.

Impressions say the game starts off strong then drops off a cliff after an hour or two, so this is a clever idea. Might give it a shot anyway since it's free.

It's more than a few hours, the game is pretty fun most of the way through. It's only when you get to the final big dungeon/tower that things start to fall apart, at least for me. There's also one baffling design decision that hampers exploration, in that you have to pick 2 robot buddies out of 4 available. These all have seperate abilities used to reach places or get items. In the open world you can get into situations where you reach a core (the artifacts needed for progression), but you discover it's covered with rocks... and you didn't bring your rock breaking companion. Then you have to warp back to home base, bring the correct buddy and get to that spot again. Imagine playing a metroidvania and having to select which upgrades to bring along, that's kind of what this is.

Downloading it now (W10 store).
And for some reason, the game price here increased since launch. From 139 BRL to 159 BRL. Meanwhile, I can find the physical version as low as 99 BRL, but I can't play that on PC. :(
I don't even...

edit: 9.36GB on PC.

Definitely seems like this game is unusually polarizing, as was already suggested (here in the review thread) when the reviews started coming in. The complete divergence between two recent impressions I've seen (the first from this thread, the second published just yesterday in Dave Bierton's Digital Foundry analysis) really just reinforced for me this sense that ReCore (to an unusual extent) tends to elicit widely divergent responses:

[0min59sec] ...The environments here are largely beautiful with accomplished lighting and some very well done surface shaders and effects work. In fact the visual aspect is what really stood out for me when I first picked out this particular title. For one this is a game that's using [the Unity engine], and most Unity titles out there aren't that impressive. But not ReCore: combined with a solid soundtrack and decent voice acting, the game doesn't take long to really get you immersed in the experience... [7min04sec] ...although performance really could be better, it's not a complete dealbreaker, and combat still comes across as pretty exciting, just not as polished as it perhaps could be... [8min40sec] ...Overall, I really enjoyed ReCore, the Metroid-style gameplay and the beautiful aesthetics with the visuals, something I simply didn't expect from a Unity engine game. ReCore definitely looks like a big-budget AAA title. It's not a perfect game by any means, and the performance could be improved on Xbox One, but overall it's a decent-looking title that has several captivating elements to it...

Personally, I'm squarely in Dave's camp (still loving this game after 17 hours, the gated final dungeon about half done, collected 31 cores so far), but given the divergent responses we continue to see, worth exercising more restraint than usual (try before you buy, and so on) before making a recommendation.

I keep getting a "Try that again" error when trying to download it...

Also getting the same error when trying to buy Gears 4, urgh.

This sure is helpful:

Try this:

http://aka.ms/diag_apps10

Download and run that.

Then when it is finished, press 'Windows Key + R', then run "wsreset.exe"; which will reset the store.

Let me know if that clears anything up for you.

Highly recommend trying this game. I need to get back into it, but FH3 and Lost Odyssey have been taking up all my time recently.
