CohhCarnage (twitch-streamer) notes that Mafia III PC is locked to 30 fps

Every pc footage has lots of stuttering. Maybe their streaming tech don't work well for higher than 30 fps and they want to avoid the Forza Horizon 3 effect.

I hope not.

The only way I accept a locked 30fps game, if it's a port for an old game or a GameMaker game. Any other case and the 30fps lock is inexcusable.

Did he try to turn off v-sync? Could be a bugged implementation of it. I doubt it's actually locked at 30fps because that would make no sense whatsoever.

Any way to go back in the Stream where he shows in game PC options? I'm having a hard time understanding how a PC game in 2016 would possibly accept a 30fps frame rate cap, especially with the engine Hangar 13 is utilizing...

Interesting - thanks all.

As a console player I am obviously not expressing a view but I thought that most people could live with 30 fps in single player - subject to IQ etc etc.

I do like single player games and 30 fps has never bothered me on console. It's all about the story right? Right?

Try controlling a game with mouse and keyboard at 30fps and tell me how enjoyable that is.

Have people become completely unable to accept framerates lower than 60 now?
How this is a big issue is just mystifying to me.
I'm so incredibly happy it doesn't matter to me. If the game was developed with 30 fps in mind (like say, Virginia or the Way of the samurai games), then that is the way I'll play it and it's absolutely fine.

Should be entertaining.

60fps is always always always better. I don't want to compromise. That's why I play on PC.

If it's all about story why not go down to 15 fps. Or why not go 640x480.
It's about all things. Visual presentation is a big thing. Playability another. Framerate affects both greatly.

Give a good reason as to why one should accept on a platform that has zero, 0 purpose for it.

Oh boy. Glad I didn't pre order this. After the shit show that was Forza Horizon 3, I'm continuing my successful approach of: Not pre-ordering anything at all.

Ever since ordering my GTX1080 I've see nothing but problems with every release I've been looking forward to. :/

You have really high standards and expectations!

Good for you. Some of us care about performance and responsiveness.

The game was not made for 30fps lol. It's a PC game from a company with a decent understanding of PC. It should at the absolute least be able to hit 60fps. Should be an unlocked framerate really.

There's no such thing as a 3D game being "made for 30 fps".

Was debating buying this, but this made it easier. Will wait.

I didn't buy a 1080 for 30 fps.

Made for 30 fps? Come on, dude
.

I'll be waiting for confirmation before I worry too much. We won't have to wait for too long. No need to rush to judgement.

What the heck? A big budget, Triple-Aye game in 2016 with a 30 FPS lock on PC? Is this 2011? This and the lack of review copies has me pretty worried for this...

There's no such thing as game made for 30fps on PC, that's something for consoles (because limited power) which doesn't apply to PC.

Not sure if this is a troll post, or if some people really are just that gullible.

Anyway, if true, justifies my decision not to pre-order even more. Funny considering Mafia 1 was a PC game first and foremost, and Mafia 2's PC version was great.

As someone who has been thrilled and excited for the game from the start, a locked 30FPS will be supremely disappointing.

And that's fucking unacceptable, I'm hoping this isn't the case. We need a mod or dev to report on it immediately.

I'm not an expert on this matter, so if someone else that knows more can chime in that would be great.

But as I have understood it, the major reason for locking at 30 is because many things become easier during development. Post effects, physics functions, syncing between different systems, frametiming; all are easier to implement when you can work with a max framerate. I remember when I created my own motion blur script in Unity and was very hard to make it look great at any framerate. I decided to optimize it for 60, then cap my game at 60.

It's probably the same here. They KNOW they will piss of PC gamers but for single player 3rd person games, how big of a portion is the PC market? 15%? Less perhaps? And out of those, at least wont care. So we're talking 7-ish % of the market. Some of those will bite the bullet, other will skip playing it but wont refund it. So they might end up losing maybe 4% of their customer base. Probably not worth it.

Cohh has Steam's FPS counter enabled. You can see upper half of it above sponsorship ads, it's clearly 30 locked for him.

There are 30fps exceptions.. Forza Horizon 3.. I actually prefer 38 fps for that game, because I get to crank up the visuals..

Mafia 3 is a different beast. It should be running 60 fps. It isn't doing anything special in terms of visuals. It just looks sloppy, no way it should be locked at 30fps.

Many people play games on PC because they desire 60 fps whenever possible. That's great that you don't, but this shouldn't surprise you.

And if you're a developer releasing your game on the PC platform, I honestly don't understand how this isn't common knowledge to you in 2016.

Since they refuse to comment on the PC-version in any shape or form, I'll take this as a fact until proven otherwise.

I'll put my money into something else in the meantime, thanks for the heads up.

Wasn't a Souls game made for 30 fps because it tied the game's logic or whatever to its framerate? :^)

Not that I think he's right.
A lot of games have certain aspects tied to their frame rate, for example, MGSV's physics. Throw a grenade there above 60 FPS and it'll hang in the air.

That being said, dude is wrong, no game can be "made" for a frame rate, especially considering how many remasters are now rectifying last gen. Hell, the Souls series is one of the most famous examples of what PC gamers will do to get above 30 FPS, and we're all better for it.

How the fuck does this still happen?

Was so close to buying it this morning and pre-loading. Thank god I didn't.

Will wait and see what happens.

This link is the for the latest stream, where he started Mafia 3. The first time he goes into game settings is around 19 minutes, although he doesn't go too deep into the settings.

I was just looking around for a deal on this game to buy it but there's absolutely no way I'm buying a 30fps PC game. How could they possibly think this is acceptable?

Well, that's one less game to buy. If they don't fix it I'll just get it for 10 bucks or something.

A 30 FPS lock in 2016, it's just crazy.
