CohhCarnage (twitch-streamer) notes that Mafia III PC is locked to 30 fps

Sheesh, I did not realize it was that big of a deal. I could see why this would be annoying if you have a powerful set up and what not, but not "fuck off 2K" worthy. Learn something new everyday.

The person that claims they get sick from 30fps is just ridiculous though.

I beleive it, screen tearing of any amount gives me headaches. Couldn't play Jak III at all because of it for example.

So did any of the early footage streamers have this on PC (not the ones that got it today, but a few weeks ago for a handful of hours)? If so, screw those people for not mentioning this.

It DOES seem weird they'd even hand out PC copies for streamers / reviewers on PC at all now though since all it would do is invite bad press.
They all had the PS4 version.

30fps is fine

I'm curios to see what happens tomorrow. Fortunately the place I preorder from allows you to refund if you don't claim your download key, so I can just wait to see what's what before I claim my key.

Apparently NZ and Australia release is still 1h away? How Steam Store says release times is so bad.

Yeah, I just submitted a support ticket about that. The problem is that Valve added "This game will unlock in approximately less than an hour" into the mix to make it clearer that there's one hour or less to go until release, however instead of replacing "This game will unlock in approximately 1 hour", it's set to appears afterwards, meaning every countdown timer on every store page is off by an hour.

Locking framerates for consoles is understandable due to power limitations, but forcing it on the pc just shows lack of forward thinking for your product when there is a large variance of hardware and display configurations your game might be running on.

Now if the gameplay is tied to the framerate then that is just just inexcusable.

A Western AAA studio doing this in 2016 would make me cry from laughing tbh.

It's the studio's first game..

I bet it is, even if the engine is the same as Mafia II's, for the most part. IIRC that is.

The real warning here is that this game is coming off the trash that is Mafia 2.

Mafia 2 was great. As with Mafia 1, the focus was on the story, character development and less so on "open world" constant action and side quests galore. I really liked it despite repetitive driving around - which is much improved over Mafia 1's labourious driving

Doesn't Bethesda games go apeshit if you run them over 60FPS?
Yeah physics go bonkers but it's still has unlocked framerate up to 60.
2nd newest NFS did this, Wolfenstein did this etc so yeah Western does it too still at year 2016.

Wolfenstein is locked to 60 not 30 and you can unlock it.

NFS was panned just as much for it and came out 3 years ago.

None of this makes sense.

The studio is comprised of industry veterans that have done their fair share of PC games., so this is far beyond a legitimate excuse.

I also doubt they are using "the same engine" as Mafia 2, but lets not forget how good previous Mafia games have been on PC.

- Mafia 1 (2002) - Capped at 63fps, widescreen resolutions have stretched UI - acceptable considering this was far before widescreen was standard like many games of its time

- Mafia 2 (2010) - Unlocked 120fps+, full arbitrary resolution support / 21:9 / multi-montior etc etc

- Mafia 3 (2016) - Crapped at 30fps..............

This wouldn't be the first time that a Mafia game had some skeevy pre-release shenanigans. Mafia 2's shitty PS3 port was covered up until the last second. I remember the community managers lying out their asses about it. They even put out bullshots to try and dissuade any concerns.

30fps is really painful on a 144hz monitor. Much more so than on a 60hz it feels like. Is this just how i'm used to things now, or will it actually feel smoother if my monitor is closer to the FPS cap?

If you don't have GSYNC/FreeSync on your 144Hz monitor, you really should put it to 120Hz. You need to keep an even multiplier to make it not be a complete stuttery mess.

Tell me how me having to stop playing Bloodborne due to a splitting headache, even though I was enjoying it, is ridiculous.

Well, that's more because Bloodborne has uneven frametimes. Had it been a locked 33.3 ms, you probably would be fine.

Shit. So it's confirmed then. I thought the streamer was probably wrong, guess not.

I'm stuck with the PC version now. This isn't good at all really, and no PC game should be locked to 30 FPS. I play a lot of games on console and am perfectly happy with 30 there, but 30 ain't the reason you drop a load of cash on a nice PC. I guess we know the reason for the late reviews now though.

I think the story and era and music of this game are going to entertain me plenty and I guess my cheap PC version is still gonna look a lot better than a PS4 version even with locked 30. But nope, unleash the hounds NeoGAF - they fucked up.

PC version will still be objectively better than the console version, even if this doesn't get fixed.

So if you're going to be stuck with something, might as well be the best version.

Hopefully this gets fixed.

There will be a workaround.

There always is.

There occasionally is a workaround. It's actually in the minority as frequently a 30 FPS cap means the frame rate is intrinsically linked to the basic functionality of the game.

I hope this will be 60 fps on PC at least.
It is weird though, that review copies or promo copies should be capped on 30 fps.
Waiting for confirmation, until I'll push the button to buy it.

There will be a workaround.

There always is.

The problem is even if there is, it'll still be a copy/paste console port in every other regard and not a true PC experience. Either way I will not support this sort of bullshit so I won't be buying it.

cohhcarnage says he was informed that it was only a review copy problem and that the game is not supposed to be capped to 30fps

guess we'll see when people actually get their hands on the game

The focus is on a mediocre at best story, ok characters (love me some Joe and Leo), and absolutely awful objectives with rote, thoroughly unremarkable gameplay that fills a bloated playing time.

He's been posting the same thing in every Mafia III thread.
Not wrong.

True its 60 but it they go mad if you remove cap and fps goes over 60.

Yeah, I just waiting on that actually, should be unlock in NZ in less than 30 minutes.

He just said on stream he never said such thing [review vs retail] and hopes game gets patched for 60FPS support.

Maybe it's like Arkham Knight was at launch and is capped at 30 and can be uncapped by going into an ini file to change. At least I hope so.

Eventually, enough people will complain about it that the devs will listen to the feedback and patch high framerate support in is what I imagine will happen.

Tell that to my Toukiden copy on Steam that is locked to 1920x1080 and capped at 30fps. Don't assume there will always be a workaround because sometimes, there just isn't one (i.e. physics/game speed tied to framerate etc).
The person that claims they get sick from 30fps is just ridiculous though.
While I'm not the poster you're refering to, I experienced the same issue in the past. So thanks for ridiculing us I guess? Uncharted 4s blurry 30fps mess and the FFXV demo indeed gave me headache. Always depends on how developers try to mitigate the low framerate.

I honestly wouldn't even worry about it. Even if the game is really capped, I'm certain they'll release an update to uncap it or at the very least bring it up to 60, because the backlash over this is going to be huge. I for one am still going to try to enjoy the game regardless.

EDIT: As expected, the Steam forums are already getting slammed. Like I said, if they don't release an update within the next month or so that unlocks/increases the cap I'll be very, very surprised.

30 FPS lock? This is the end of the fucking world!

It's really not that big of a deal to me, 30 seems fine for the kind of game Mafia 3 is. This whole "EVERY GAME OF EVERY GENRE MUST BE 60 FPS MINIMUM OR WE RIOT" is pretty ridiculous and childish. Everyone always acts like the developers do this just to be assholes (or because they're lazy or something) but it's not like they just did it for kicks, there's always a reason and it seems like Mafia 3 was always built with 30 FPS in mind. Look at Forza Horizon 3, designed from the ground up for 30 fps and trying to get 60 right now is a fucking clusterfuck nightmare on PC.

If low frame rates are causing you physical issues, I'm surprised you even own a modern console tbh.

I barely play it, to be honest. I've only managed to finish Uncharted 1 on PS4 so far. UC2-3 and The Last of Us Remastered shouldn't be a problem, but things like Destiny or Bloodborne take me a long time to get used to, and I need to play it small chunks not to get a headache.

Ooookay.
