PSVR Review Thread

Oddly enough, this is exactly what turned me off with OG Wii & motion control in general. Seeing on-screen cursors, target reticles, etc. jitter and jump like an over-caffeinated amphetamine junkie made me not want to have anything to do with the tech at all.

It's odd that Sony chose a sphere as the shape on top of the move controller. While working good enough to track it's position in 3D space, I'm assuming to provides no value in the small movements or rotation because a sphere is the same viewed from any angle. Had they chosen a square, triangle or something it could have given them something else for the camera detect and not rely solely on a gyro.

It's a catch-22. The motion sickness isn't a function of resolution or framerate (assuming a suitable framerate is realized). It's a biological response that won't go away until people develop a resistance. In the VR community it is referred to as getting your "VR Legs".

No, that's a complete myth. Some games are simply designed better than others on this front. Some games (actually many games) require absolutely no VR legs. Me and everyone else I've shown my Vive to have required no sort of acclimation, it just works, no motion sickness or anything. The reason for this is that in most experiences, camera control never happens independently of your own physical movement. Most movement is teleportation, which is only mildly disorienting at first and causes no nausea. Anything that yanks your head around, like a rollercoaster or traditional game movement, that's what causes nausea. And there may be a bit of "VR legs" to that, but much of it is on the developers.

RE7 causes sickness because the devs have ignored all conventional wisdom about developing a VR game and jerk your camera around. VR legs doesn't fix that.

A more core issue of the PSVR in general is that having pretty much only one direction you can face, no turning around, means that they're going to have to move your camera around or else leave you facing one way for the whole game. You can't for example turn 180 degrees in real life and point your controller toward a spot on the ground to teleport behind you. It loses tracking.

I don't have a complete understanding of how Move works, it's possible that the end of the sphere affixed to the wand is used as part of the detection. When a chunk of the sphere is missing in a certain shape, they know a little more about how the controller is rotated.

Otherwise I would worry that a partially-occluded sphere would be interpreted as a smaller sphere, detected as being further away.

What are everyone's planned launch purchases?
I'm thinking:
RIGS
Driveclub
Until Dawn
Thumper
And maybe VR worlds as the disc to use when I get my family to have a go.

I Preordered Rigs, Driveclub, Until Dawn, Batman, and I have VR Worlds from the bundle. Want to get SportsbarVR if but only if I can't people to play it with on GAF.

Replied to you in Sangetsu-II's thread about this. Just take a look at the spreadsheet. A lot of us will be picking it up. :)

I just found out about SportsbarVR today and I'm definitely in day one. I'm surprised there aren't any other really social, mess around experiences like rec room or that demo Sony did about a year ago.

I'm going with

Batman
Battlezone
PlayStation VR Worlds
Rigs
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
and maybe SportsBarVR

Really excited for all of this!

Time to bring back PS Home in VR!

I would encourage everyone to not sleep on Here They Lie. The pedigree of the developers alone would be a selling feature but it looks amazing as well. I mean it's the creative director of Spec Ops: The Line and the designer of Tomb Raider making a surreal horror game in VR. Like wat?

It's on my list, but unfortunately is not yet available to pre-order. I'm hoping to see some reviews come out before launch, but I may jump in blind on it.

My problem is I might not be able to sleep after Here They Lie lol.

I am not a horror person at all even though some of the games interest me. The only horror game I've played from start to finish was Until Dawn and I had to play it with my fiance, and it still was extremely scary for me.

I might be able to handle Until Dawn: Rush of Blood since it doesn't have free roam (so I will at least know it will constantly continue), but being in control of a character with the ability to move freely might literally be the death of me lol.

I'm a scaredy-cat too. But I felt Until Dawn more humorous than scary. Maybe it was the mindset I was playing the game in. I was playing with my friend and we were pretty judgmental on the characters and wanted to see most die.

I'm going all in with horror for VR, that's probably stupid for me to do, but heh.. I can't help myself. :)

I'll consider it when the physical release happens in November. :)

Great. Now I can't even find the page on the PlayStation Store. Is this going to be out for launch, or not?

That too.

I know what you mean, but personally I am dubious that we will ever really see fully fledged games with the current hardware, particularly from Sony. I wouldn't wait 6 months to purchase as the hardware is already outdated before its even released.

Id be happy using the standard PS4 controller for first person games with the VR headset for added immersion. If enough come along like this then it would be a worthwhile purchase for me.

But we already have full games at lunch....

driveclub (have a ffb wheel ready to go, too)
until dawn rush of blood
thumper
superhypercube
rez
ssd ultra (not sure what to expect, cheap though so...)
++ probably more one the reviews come through!

considering something like loading human at some point, but £30 for something that's episodic seems like it'd be best left until a complete set is on offer.

definitely going to check out the non-game experience stuff to some extent as well, need more info and pricing, think it's coming soon.

Why are people judging this based on launch titles? If you're that unsure, then wait 6mo to a year and then decide if you want to buy one based on available software.

It's not even all launch titles - it's really only a small subset of those available day one, plenty of games not reviewed yet, and tons more before the end of the year. I think some are happy to get swept up and jump aboard a GAF hype train, but end up scraping 'round for excuses when it's time to open their wallets ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So I pre-ordered exactly a week ago on Amazon UK and the order has just been updated to say it's arriving on the release date. So either they've had a stock update or there have been a lot of cancellations.

Still remember the wobbly PS4.

"SONY IS DEAD TO ME"

I think a more apt example would be a day before the launch of PS4. You had a guy who one his PS4 from Taco Bell struggle to get his working and was constantly on the phone with Sony support (it was all being streamed on Twitch) and then you. Then you had Kotaku and IGN that had faulty PS4s. If I recall the faulty part was due to the HDMI port (I remember Kotaku's PS4 would just destroy their HDMI cables). There was a lot of concern from people here that night. Some real, other trolling.

Tim had a few good scares on today's video lol

I'd wait for detailed reviews on Sportsbar. The base game looked dreadful on Vive, prompting an insta-refund from myself. The devs foolishly employed UE4's temporal AA (blurry as fuck, an absolute no-no for VR) paired with a relatively low render resolution for a visual nightmare in IQ. I can't even begin to imagine the fuckery they've conjured on the much much weaker OG PS4 HW. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say maybe they've improved things since then though, check out reviews.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll probably take my chances with it anyway though.

I think they said you can use the DS4 instead of the Move for all games.

A few have mandatory move, but most will let you use DS4, but give you a lesser experience. (I know London Heist as been confirmed to have less features without the move and until dawn locks your two hands together.)

Thanks for the input. Hopefully someone gets ahold of it before release date... If not, I can just enjoy everything else that day and buy it digitally if the consumer impressions aren't awful.

Anyone else keep checking their Amazon order. It's getting ridiculous.

Me. Over and over. The reports of retailers cancelling pre-orders that I've seen have got me paranoid.

Who's doing the OT and when's it going down?

Also. Anyone else keep checking their Amazon order. It's getting ridiculous.

So is PS Move necessary for some games?

Clearly some games will benefit more then others.
Games like these make good use of the Move controllers. Not sure how this would play with a gamepad.

isn't the base game Pool Nation VR? That is a lot of fun on vive and I thought the image quality was pretty nice.

Sangetsu-II is doing it. I assume as per usual, just a bit before launch?

He did a wonderful job keeping the games list thread up to date since last year.

Neogaf.

Glad to hear as I have the same situation and am hoping VR might not have the same effect .

My fiancée did the shark cage one, which I'm sure helped. My only advice is if you play any kind of flying game, be careful with barrel rolls. I never get motion sickness, but I decided to go for one during the Eve Valkyrie demo and it definitely made my head and stomach spin a little lol. After that I quickly got my head to accept the lack of "up and down" in space and was able to pilot fine. Most games to appear pretty stationary and like the PlayStation guy at the demo was saying- it's not as bad because your own head is doing the looking around vs watching a screen move around, which my fiancé has trouble handling for first person shooters and such.

For me I'm getting

Batman
Battlezone
Rez
Thumper
Job Simulator
Rush of Blood

Have to read reviews on Here They Lie and Rigs before I commit to those.

Edit: Oh and VR Worlds to start things off easy! First time in VR for me.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll probably take my chances with it anyway though.

Yeah for that cheap price, and for the type of silly fun that Sportsbarvr is going for, I'm not too concerned about IQ.

For London Heist good thing I have the bundle preordered. I actually have the old move controllers and the sharpshooter but don't want to take a chance on the batteries.

For me:
VR Worlds (comes in bundle)
Batman VR
Until Dawn

Not right away, but soon:
Sportsbar VR
Here They Lie (I might wait until physical comes out)

Maybe:
Rez
Rigs
Battlezone

Driveclub is number one for me. Other than that, reviews and impressions have seriously turned me on to Until Dawn, even though I'm not a big horror guy. REZ sounds interesting but that's based purely on hype.

Mostly I'm just gonna see what I think would feel good. I've always loved the look of Headmaster, and the demo is getting some serious usage.

So far I'm sticking with the included VR Worlds and I did preorder Arkham. Everything else is "wait and see" mode, really eager to check out that demo disc and go from there.

I'm getting:

Rigs
VR Worlds
Rez
Job Simulator
Tumble
Super Stardust Ultra
100ft Robot Golf

Thinking about:
Until Dawn
Thumper

I especially liked the part where crossing the move controllers crossed the lights on screen. I know it's expected but still very cool to see.

I have one of these too. It's useless for PS VR though. They're making a better one for Farpoint and the old one isn't compatible. :(

I'll still buy it.

For me I am getting:

100ft Robot Golf
Ace Banana
Batman Arkham VR
Battlezone
Bound (already own it)
Headmaster
Super Stardust Ultra VR
Playstation VR Worlds (bundle)
Rez Infinite
Super Hypercube
Thumper
Wayward Sky

Maybe:
Eve Gunjack
Eve Valkyrie
Rigs

Yay someone else getting Ace Banana.

I was going to pass on it. But after playing The Lab's and Vanishing Realm's archery gameplay.. I need something like that.

So, now that the Vita is dead and Oculus has announced a standalone device in the works, what are the chances we'll see a standalone PSVR console from Sony in 3-4 years from now?

I don't see why. That standalone oculus headset is probably not going to be capable of providing high-end VR gameplay. It's not gonna give you much more than you can expect from mobile-based VR.

The next iteration of PSVR will surely be built for PS5 and provide a premium experience (compared to PS4 VR at least)

I'm very interested in Rez, but as it comes on the demo I'll wait to give it a try.

Only game i'll be buying for VR on day one is SuperHyperCube. I already have Bound and Tomb Raider comes with that VR experience.
