Stellaris |OT| Imperium Universalis

I know that, but the impression given by the devblogs is that they ran out of time to go beyond just the simple features. They way they've worded some things suggests that it released before they wanted to, and the patches are now bringing it up to the standard it should have been on release.

They've said in other devblogs that they know they didn't go far enough with some things and it's lacking. It seems like it's less "We can do it better now" and more "We didn't get time to do it right in the first place" with some of these things.

I'd have to agree with you.

I can imagine that it may have been a case of a deadline they had to hit maybe for the IPO, or maybe just budget constraints meant they needed to get it out of the oven and get some cash coming in.

I've not played in a while (wedding, month long honeymoon, work) but I'll be jumping back in with the DLC.

Got burned pretty bad on this, no more Paradox day one purchases. I love their games and the continued support is second to none, but releasing games half-baked for business reasons is shitty.

Looking forward to trying out 1.3, but not shelling out for the DLC before the base game is fun and playable all the way though.

This is actually my first Paradox game. I've enjoyed the 18 hours i've played it for but it seems lacking in pretty much every area. What's there seems only half-done, and there isn't much there in the first place. Even things as simple as trading and remapping controls are missing...so of course the first paid DLC that actually expands the game adds trading in some way. The DLC looks great but considering how empty the base game is that should have been free, i think. The devblogs just reinforce the whole "It wasn't done but we released it anyway" idea. It feels like it's less "Buy this to improve the game" and more "Buy this for things we left out that should have been there at the start".

While some people will disagree, I always like to bring up EU4. It started out as a barely playable mess, but today it's probably Paradox's best strategy game (I like CK2 more, but for the roleplay stuff). I would very much like to know which way Stellaris will go, there's pretty much an endless amount of stuff they can add, it's just going to take a while.

In all reality, these games should be released as early access titles so those new to the genre can be prepared for the half baked product they'll receive. It takes years for these 4x games to hit their stride. And frankly, after you pay for all the bolt on features that arguably should have been included from the jump, you end up paying far more than a regular game. Trading? Diplomacy? Reasonable AI? Come on, these are all integral components that should never be neglected at release (see galciv 3 for an example of neglect)

I can see that, would probably work.

What are they like with actually adding entirely new stuff for free? The patches are definitely improving things, but are actual content additions to the game something Paradox do for free?

Completely agreed and heck this has been going on as long as Paradox has existed- EU3, HOI3 were frankly even worse but were more than fixed by DLC, and the generation before both Vicky and HOI2 required game saving expansions, and EU2 you just had to live with the jank. At least now when they release a game it's stable, but I really wish they would actually do feature complete launches now. I'm extremely optimistic for what Stellaris will be, but that's not an excuse for its current state (where I couldn't really get past my first playthrough).

EDIT:

IIRC about 40% of any given DLC comes for free with the accompanying patch. Oftentimes this will take the form of the DLC mechanics are added to base version of the game, but aren't necessarily playble. For instance, all the mechanics Sword of Islam added to Muslim dynasties were present in the base game, but you couldn't actually play as one. Or with EU4, Conquest of Paradise added colonial nations and the basic liberty mechanic to base game, but you couldn't play as colonial nations and I don't think all of the interactivity was there.

I wouldn't say EU4 was barely playable, it was fairly fun on launch and it was stable for the most part. Multiplayer was wonky, but they didn't really fix that until Stellaris/HoI4. Stellaris was the most polished release they've ever had probably, but the game itself was shallow.

Paradox is pretty good at free stuff. Every DLC/expansion comes with a patch and they always outline which new features are paid and which are free. Pretty much every big patch adds new free stuff.

Work continues apace...

Speaking of sentimental ships, I'm hoping Leviathan can go a step further than vanilla Stellaris and grant me a ship I never want to lose.

From some of the dev blogs, I think they're on the right track.
We never saw any Constitution ships destroyed in DS9, as that was the TOS Enterprise's class.

Dammit, Google.

Galaxy-class! Their destruction is the worst.

This being a Paradox game, what is the current status of this?

Has it been patched to a good quality or are there still major work needed?

Honestly, it's fine. It's just not very in-death compared to their other output. I'm sure the expansions will fix that in time.

Yisss.

BOTF2 shall me mine soon

Downloadable now already. ;)

Figured out a way to make a dominant species used only for rulers and a nominated species used for scientist/admiral etc. roles so long as they exist in the country. So basically, Vorta leaders with Founder rulers.

Those XL size main guns firing looks so awesome.

There's a major patch going live in 3 days, as of now it's effectively the same as it was in summer but with bugs fixed.

I can't play anymore other than another 10-20 hours in Heinlein until they release a massive Diplo expansion.

There's really only one viable play style right now and it's Space Hitler.

While visually the design of everything looks great...i didn't realize before just how boring and lifeless the combat in the game feels. Ships just sit there, not moving and trading attacks with each other.
It's basically a better-visualised version of CK2's combat system.

Heinlein looks like it will fix my big gripe with the combat, namely the boring fleet comps. This, coupled with the decrease in habitable planets yet an increase in habitable planet types should make expansion (and conquest) much more interesting overall.

It's a good start, but I feel that the combat needs more dice rolls and an actual framework rather than just a back and forth HP sink. Limit the size of fleets, add stacking penalties, make it a tactical fight rather than number vs number.

Man. I posted from mobile in the post above and somehow Stellaris got bupped from my regular subscription group. Weird!

Right... I forgot the biggest difference from CK2's combat: attrition & supply!

Some kind of logistics penalty for large fleets would make sense, with techs that lessen it. Basically, a fleet soft cap on top of a regular ship soft cap. When they add this (it does seem kind of inevitable) they just need to get a UI that makes fleet management somewhat hassle-free.

You're already limited by how much energy you have, though. Pretty much the whole point of getting it is to be able to afford more ships, if they add actual limits to ship numbers then it means there's basically no point in going past a certain amount of energy.

Just like you only need one 20 stack of troops in EU4? Energy could be used better, but it is at least used for building upkeep, trade and rushing building as well.

They're going to increase the naval "hard" cap from 1000 to 9999 from those notes, that's going to be very interesting with how energy needs used to scale exponentially when above that cap.

Love that they've upped the starting trait limit. Always found four a little limiting, rarely could get th race quite how I wanted them being boxed in like that.

Good catch. Didn't notice that before. Yeah, having the ability to have 5 traits will definitely be fun to play with.

Joint victory? Finally diplomatic games aren't completely useless!

It's funny how Endless Legend also just now came around to adding a joint victory. Strategy devs overlook the importance of diplomacy way too often it seems.

Weird, the DLC isn;t linked on the Steam page for Stellaris, had to search for it manually and even then there's no price.

bleh.

Maybe it will link once the DLC is actually released? I looked a few days ago and there was not a prepurchase option on the DLC as well.

in case you don't know (and if i remember correctly) you can pre-order it at the paradox store for 10 euro (or your region equivalent)

Only a few hours to go before Levithan. What are peoples plans for first time empires in this Space Dragon rich universe? I am thinking of making an individual materialist race because I am coming off a long war heavy spiritualist game so I am looking for the total opposite and I want to see the new effect individualist has on the game. Likely gonna slap on the deviant trait just to make them interesting.

Should be up in 30 minutes.
PLEASE NOTE: Stellaris: Leviathans Story Pack will be released 15:00 PM CEST on Thursday October 20th 2016. You may activate your Steam Key before then, however you'll not have access to the Story Pack until the time of release.
Edit: Heinlein has just been deployed. Levithans to follow any minute.

The same as before.

Death to the xenos filth polluting our galaxy. Mankind will rule the stars.
