Will buy as soon as I beat the first one.

I'm totally not surprised what this thread turned into. Are we going to do this for every game announcement?

I hope R* releases a remaster of Red Dead Revolver and Redemption, never got a chance to play either last gen.

This comment is exactly why. It's the answer to your questions

You realize how naive that kind of thinking is, right? The "go do it yourself" dismissal absolutely ignores how influential the biggest in the medium can be. Do you think some diverse indie games by GAF members would have as much influence as a game by Naughty Dog or Rockstar or whatnot?

It also ignores the notion of being informed. Why do you think developers like Druckmann and others have stated how thinking about topics brought up by Anita influenced their game design and storytelling? It's about encouraging developers and creators to broaden their horizons and not stick to old cliches and stereotypes
But we simply shouldn't make those poor devs think about how their media affects people and simply talking about it is just TOO MUCH, IT'S TOO MUCH. Outrage culture!

Yes, that´s how it works

And just out of curiosity, what have you created?
Why do you think one of if not the biggest film company in the world decided to cast a black man and a woman as the leads of one of the most influential modern films of our time. Why do you think Mulan is getting a Chinese lead in the live action adaptation after tons of backlash in hollywood about whitewashed roles. Why do you think one of the biggest game franchises ever made had a woman as a playable main character, (AC:S), and is including female character options in a ton of their games, (For Honor, Ghost Recon, WD2), and that same company is making female guards a regular thing in their games. Media absolutely has an effect on people. If gaming started as diverse as it was today then there wouldn't be all these flimsy excuses to defend what may be yet another example of a big company reinforcing the status quo.

Because this is NeoGaf and people love them some outrage.

Outrage is basically on the list of words that automatically make your post shit. It means literally nothing at this point. Please provide an objective metric showing the level of emotional response from people favoring more diversity in games exceeds the emotional response of those offended by the talk of inclusion or anything else. You can't. It's fucking tales from your ass. You're pouting because people are discussing something you don't want them to discuss. If it makes you less triggered, just pretend the posts discussing potential diversity in the cast of the game are saying "Day 1!!!" or "pre-ordered" or "why the PC delay!? They want that double-dip money." I'm sorry you were forced to see opinions that differ from yours - the true outrage.

FUCK. YES.

I'm late to this announcement, but I have never been more excited for an upcoming release in my 28 years of gaming. I cannot freaking wait for this.

It might be further along than you think.

This. I don't really care about Revolver but a 1080p (or even 4K) remaster for Redemption would be amazing to pass the time between the sequel's release.

If the "story Rock* wants to tell" and has the right to tell of course, is the same Hollywoodized 'stylized' whitewashed John Wayne "Wild West" as the first game then I have the right not to give them $60 and to complain on internet message boards.

Sad to see that some are really opposed to diversity. Not that it's surprising.
More or less no one on here is "opposed to diversity." Many are opposed to the idea that it must be mandated and enforced with censure. No one product can ever be perfectly diverse, nor should it be. Attempting to serve everyone at the same time may lead to you making a product that serves no one and lacks its own identity.

Different games tell different stories in different ways, and attempting to enforce quotas is the lead productive way to tackle this kind of conversation.

In any case, we don't yet have any real idea of what this game really is. I'm sure whatever conversation is being had will be completely different once the trailer launches and people get an idea what the game is really about.

If every new game announcement is:

A Rockstar game
A Red Dead Redemption game
Prominently shows 7 characters, all of them male
Doesn't show 'PC' among the platforms to be released on.

Probably? Should we not?

.

If Rockstar didn't want people to talk about a teaser image released 2 days before the actual trailer, then they shouldn't have been releasing a teaser image 2 days before the trailer.
Is there some kind of unwritten rule as to when it is okay to discuss a game based on the information we do have and the information we don't have yet?

Dat poll.I hate how there's probably gonna be Red Dead Online.

I thought it was pretty much confirmed by "An epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland, the game's vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience."

It's their game and their vision. I wasn't that big on RDR because once I got to Mexico, the game felt like such a slog. Still interested in this, though.

To the contrary, it actually made a pretty great argument for releasing it late.

5.6 million copies and that's not even counting the ones not on Steam, and the game hasn't exactly been on amazing bottom basement sales.

Why not get the double dips when the audience doesn't seem to care?

Right? I was legitimately surprised by reading over and over and over how many people double dipped or even triple dipped GTA V.

Well... It seems R* was pretty happy with it.

I'm not though. :(

I just loaded up my 100% RDR save file and took a ride from Punta Orgullo to Hennigans Stead at Sunset and I am so so happy we are getting another one sniff wipes eye

Rescued a Stage Coach, survived a roadside ambush and failed to save a Treasure Hunter on the way - it was glorious. The year long wait is too much for me to contemplate at the moment.

Rockstar also forwarded that they can do a better port when their core team moves over after the project is done.

They'll have to stop doing late ports at some point, either because the sales aren't there or the sales are too much to ignore. Probably the latter.

But what's concerning about RDR2 not coming to PC (at least for now) is that the first one didn't either, so some think that Rockstar SD might stay out of putting the series on PC altogether.

So...this is 1906, or a lot earlier since it looks like Marston is with the gang.

I always wondered what happened to his daughter. I guess she died as a baby, that came after his gang though.

I really want to see how he becomes close to Abigail, although showing the fact that she slept with the whole gang (being a former prostitute) at one point feels a bit weird. Heh

I wonder if they'll even explore that.

To go even further, I would have figured it was confirmed by GTAV making tons and tons of cash. No way they're not capitalizing on that in their future games.

Sucks that well have to wait over a year again for them to bring to PC because they know they made tons of money on double dippers long after the console versions were out with GTA V.
That or it's never coming coming to PC like the first for some reason and I'll never play a Red dead game :(

I don't know what's more naive, the "go do it yourself" thinking or thinking that pushing a female protagonist in RDR2 would be a great influence in gender equality.

i wonder if this thread will be the spark of another Nadine Ross-type controversy.

I'm not to sure what that is without Googling, but I think this is just the result of a hugely popular and anticipated sequel being announced. Precisely what I said to that GAFer who said "but the most anticipated game ever is announced and everyone isn't just posting yay!?!?!?!".

If you mean some sort of response from Rockstar, no chance. For the reasons I just said some posts above.

Yes you have to have equality in how things are represented in a medium I agree. But if your making a game that depicts a period where white male were more prominent for outlaws and such It is there duty to tell that story as it was intended per the writing.

If they wrote it as all women in the game were from brothels or just homesteaders I guess yes it's extreme sexists and people should be outraged. But red dead redemptions story had many female lead characters who added to the world and john's story.

Should steven spielberg have had a female lead in saving private ryan? Or actually showed in general female soldiers in the storming of Normandy?

What? There wasn't a single woman during D-day. How are you comparing this to the period of the Wild West, when there were in fact women present. I can't believe I even have to point out how ridiculous that comparisson is.

But don't bother looking around for any help surmounting the incredible barriers to entry for anybody trying to create a AAA game.

What a crock of shit.

Please enlighten me on the barriers? If you have a sound concept for a game either it be story based or not, AAA, Indie then people can go make it. Horizon is a female lead in a weird sci-fi open world game that may rival red dead.

Transistor was a indie game made by a studio who are veterans in the AAA space.

Please show me these barriers in a medium where anyone for any platform can make a game. That game being successful or having hardships when getting made are part of the industry that still is changing and growing as the diversity of developers do.

As a creator, this sort of post is just so disappointing. You have a bigger responsibility than just 'tell the story you want to'. That's not how it works.

Nahhhhhh, I don't necessarily agree with this. It's up to the individual creator whether or not they want to take up a "bigger responsibility." Some people just don't know more than what's put in front of them, and do well sticking to that and doing good work within that box.

At the same time, that doesn't mean people have to stop trying to verbally smack those creators into reality, attempting to show them that there's more happening outside of what and/or how they choose to represent their immediate surroundings, or in the way they perceive the world.

I don't know what's more naive, the "go do it yourself" thinking or thinking that pushing a female protagonist in RDR2 would be a great influence in gender equality.

i don't see anyone saying that a female lead in rdr2 is going to end sexism but i don't see why it wouldn't be an influence in gender representation in gaming

Yes, that´s how it works

I would guess that an artist has a fiduciary obligation to the person that commissioned him for the work to make the art the person with the money wants. Sure, an artist can go home, spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on their own computer software, hardware, graphics cards, and licence out an engine and then make whatever game he wants then pay to self publish and absolutely get his original idea out to the world untainted.

Problem is, if you, me and a million other people don't buy it the artist goes broke and is unable to keep on doing it. Back to the publisher, back the AAA developer who, by the way, have a massive hard on for money. They determine what you can do to assist in making them the most money and you now have a job. For a while, anyway.

Then you don't understand what "needs" means.
If the game needs a mkb, is it unplayable with a controller?

No. Where does he say that - he doesn't. It is a preference that he "needs". Just as it is a preference I would like, but in my case don't necessarily need.

This is beyond obvious with context of the previous messages, but of course you want your narrative for the "high horse". Go take it.

I want a PC release just as much as the next PC gamer, but those claiming it's already a done deal need to calm down. The first game didn't come to PC. Hell, Rockstar hasn't even bothered with a remaster for consoles. They claimed the "code was a mess" and that "PC wasn't a viable platform for a game like RDR". I wouldn't hold your breath. I'm not missing this game, though. If there is no same day release date for PC alongside consoles, I'm buying this for my PS4 no question.

I don't know what's more naive, the "go do it yourself" thinking or thinking that pushing a female protagonist in RDR2 would be a great influence in gender equality.

So what is almost guaranteed to be the highest selling game of the generation having a female protagonist wouldn't be influential....

Gotcha. If you're not wildly changing the world, apparently trying is too much to ask.

I'm totally not surprised what this thread turned into. Are we going to do this for every game announcement?

Yea, my sentiments exactly.

I mean, I would understand if the social commentary discussion was only a part of the thread, but it's completely overtaken it.

Whatever happened to getting excited about the announcement and the poster? Whatever happened to speculation about what it could be? And wondering if Rockstar learned any lessons from the first Read Dead, and hopefully improved those things in this next game? For example, I know many people complain about the shooting mechanics in many Rockstar games (maybe except for Max Payne 3), so I'm wondering if this game is gonna have improved mechanics?
