I don't play games on the go so this doesn't interest me particularly as a concept but will get if there are games that interest me on it.

Any chance there's more to the Switch? In terms of a big, defining feature? I'm a little bummed out that after all the secrecy, the big reveal was that it's a hybrid. Every avid gaming person more or less already knew that.

(Not that I'm not feeling what's been shown. Super freaking psyched for it.)

I'm ultra happy and hyped for Nintendo Switch but my godness the dock with the screen in totally looks like a damn toaster!

You got a problem with toasters?

So are we making a sticky with a leaker wall of shame? With Supermetaldave on top.

To those asking about battery life on Nintendo Switch, I'm hearing "mediocre" battery life.

If the charging port for this thing is the commonly-used micro USB ports then it won't be much of a problem *brings out a smartphone battery pack*. Kind of expected to have a pretty poor battery life because of all the devices running on this thing, but that's a downside for a handheld. Would be awesome if it has an awesome standby mode though.

It matches the control stick placement on the little controller wand dealies. Also it drives home the yin-yang.

A yin-yang is perfectly symmetrical, this is not. Even if the controller's stick placement is a little higher on the right, the logo shouldn't be that way. I'd prefer it if the ball on the right side of the logo was lowered.

Edit: Okay, I take it back. It's fine as it. I can see the controller more looking at the logo. Lowering the ball would be worse.

I take back what I said.

Haha I thought that the Skyrim footage was an ironic gaffer mock up, but they actually used it extensively in the trailer.

all the hardware aside from the tablet looks like it came out of a 3D printer

but I'm pretty fucking pumped for it, I need a new handheld in my life and the GDP Win 10 is a bit too expensive for it's power

Yeah i think the system will be good, but that this device is simultaneously a poor reading of the market. Was hoping there would be a better hook so Nintendo could be console competitive again.

Not sure this does it.

Well, this is the last hope for Japanese hand held gaming if the all the Vita devs don't just switch entirely to PC. I guess I'm in.

I love the name, tbh I love everything about this reveal. I really hope we get details on the games soon though! Don't leave us hanging Nintendo, take advantage of the hype you're so rightly generated with this.

I will probably get it. Looks like the new portable games are going to be on it and I need me some of that Pokemon and Fire Emblem fix.

Graphics seem poor. I have no use for a portable handheld console, so Nintendo is trying to force me to spend money on a damn tablet instead of improving graphical capabilities. This seems destined to flop.

I don't know if it will be a flop. But clearly not for you.

For now though, I can safely say that my interests moving forward lie mostly with VR.
Then do what a lot of people have already been doing and just own a PC and the latest Nintendo console?

Dunno why consoles have to try and purse VR so early with so little decent games existing for it.

Exactly. Nothing here to "hide" from Sony/Microsoft.

That said this is the first Nintendo console I'm interested in after two terrible gens for them in my eyes.

Wonder how the battery life is going to be. If it can last more than a couple of hours I'll be impressed

It seems like a pretty big portable system, so if they keep the handhelds resolution to 720p they could probably manage decent battery life. I'd guess 4 hours at the very least (with a very graphics intensive game).

Maybe the controllers could serve as external batteries to give the handheld more juice while connected.

Will this thing work like a wiiu as well? Or is that completely off the table?

What does a Wii U do that the Switch apparently can't?

It does more in my mind. The Wii U gamepad had lot's of dead spots and the range was garbage at home.

With the switch I can take it ANYWHERE.

The only things that we don't know at this stage that I could do on the gamepad were youtube, internet browser etc but I think those sort of things are in.

No stylus though I don't think, but at least unlike the Wii U we don't need a tv to set the console up lol.

At the same time as a handeld, the tablet with the lateral controllers seems to be very big to carry around and not really kid-friendly, which has been a key market for Nintendo so far saving their ass even when things were going wrong.

My kids are 3 and 5 and all they use, by choice, is tablets to watch and game.

And all I see with the neighbours' kids are tablets as well.

It's odd they haven't mentioned anything about it other than I assume charging and hdmi output. I hope it does something than just be tidy.

Bare minimum is 400 bucks. I hope they throw a game with that to ease the blow but who am I kidding.

I would imagine that there has to be a fan in the back of that base to cool off the tablet. The kind of crappy thing about this console is that those that just want a new Nintendo console and will probably never use it as a tablet have to eat the cost of the display. Maybe they should have made two versions. One with everything in the base and one like they shown today.

Its a chicken and egg scenario. The games won't be there until they can get people to buy the rig.

Anything revealed if you can charge it as a portable sans the docking station? It's gotta be a thing right to have a optional power plug you can take with you.

Neat.

Not nearly as compelling as VR, but it seems to be filling its own niche with being a portable console of sorts.

I wouldn't say I'm excited about it, but I'll be interested in hearing more about pricing and software.

For now though, I can safely say that my interests moving forward lie mostly with VR.
It's the opposite for me... I'm eager to have some VR, but it's too early, there's plently of really rough sides in current offerings (sub-SD resolution, no optic adjustments, 120fps will be hard to reach, etc.) and it's still insanely expensive.

With nearly 6h of commuting time daily (yes, I know, it's... complicated), it's the perfect offering for me.

PSVR is compelling enough for me. Nintendo consoles always leave too much to be desired when you add it all up. But as I said, I'll keep an eye on it.

Sold. I'll buy it (probably) at a high price.

This is your last chance Nintendo. Don't screw it up!

The physical design is pretty ugly though.

I thought the physical design is really nice. Very industrial, very IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad. Then again, I love industrially designed objects. DSi was my favourite in gaming.

This is what I was thinking as well and is kinda important. Hopefully seeing everyone complain and buy a battery pack for Pokemon Go made Nintendo realize they should go with a USB style charger. If so, then the battery life is less of an issue in my opinion.

Edit: reworded

Oh man, I just thought of the potential this thing could do with the tablet. For 3DS and DS emulation, you could flip the tablet 90 degrees and you'd have enough space for that kind of emulation. One problem with this is the controller doesnt attach to the upper and lower part of the tablet but still doable, I think.

rn looking like 30-50 mil Ltd imo

ofc price and marketing will be bigger effects but this teaser was already more well done than the Wii U's plus it seems Nintendo has a better grasp on things software wise

Main questions I have:

Touchscreen?
Motion controls? (guessing yes)
Possible to display different images on the screen and TV? (guessing no)
Battery life?
Support for past controllers?
VC strategy?

The touchscreen is the main thing; I think it would be a huge mistake to have no touchscreen— no VC for DS, 3DS, concessions must be made in porting Wii U games, much less attractive as a portable if controllers are always required (games like picross, and of course video shouldn't require them).

Of course the problem with having a touchscreen is that no game can require its use, since all games will need to work with the screen in the dock. So that severely hampers the types of games and control methods that are possible. Unless of course Nintendo allows portable-only games.

Lack of dual-screen is to me a big disappointment, and it seems so silly to have that nice extra screen that's rendered completely useless when using a TV.

I'm quite sure it's a touchscreen. On the video, when they show local multiplayer Splatoon, one of the devices has some text scribbled on it and it looks like it was done with fingers.

I doubt it. I think there are definitely tonnes of smaller features that haven't been shown though. It was a 3 minute preliminary trailer and Nintendo tried to keep it as simple as possible. I expect a longer direct / press event next week.
