Its a smart idea as long as the build quality is good.

They're also optional you can get a pro controller. Not sure how anyone could have an issue with them really.

Why are they smart? Is split screen multiplayer on a small device really in demand? With tiny controllers?

My thread got locked. Ill try here.

I dont tknow that i will need it anymore once Switch releases. My assumption is that anything good on it will have spruced up ports on the new Switch, making my WiiU obsolete quickly. Even if i threw it in my bedroom, isnt that the point of the Switch? To be in every room?

Are you keeping your WiiU? Selling it? Gifting it?
Depending on the ports the Switch gets, I'll probably sell it or give it away.

I'm not saying your daft. I just think we're jumping the gun here a bit. I mean if all you want is like the five most popular Wii U games then I don't think you're going out on a limb assuming that there'll be Switch ports. But I'm not expecting every single good Wii U game to automatically get ported.

That last sentence might be the one that makes me keep the wiiu. Maybe things like bayo 2 will stay behind.

I don't see the point.

I've never even taken my 3DS or Vita anywhere, I have a phone for when I need to kill time outside, if I'm flying, well their battery lives are shit and I cba with charging them abroad so I don't bother taking them. Why would I lug around this massive thing.

This thing is too big to be a handheld, too small/weak to be a home console.

And unless this thing has a 10 hour battery life or something, I will never take it out of the house, so then it's just a gimped console.

Due to work I mostly spend my time with portables.

This Switch concept looks interesting with the option to continue the exact same game on big screen when possible.

I don't really get the appeal myself, and showing a load of people playing last gen games doesn't exactly sell me on the concept of this being anything particularly new. But interested to see what it's capable of.

Looks amazing in all honesty. Day one.
The only bad thing I can point out is the logo plastered everywhere. Even if it was just the controller graphic it wouldn't be as bad. Its too in your face.

But I don't play consoles for their looks, and, again, this seems to be amazing.

I am of the belief that Mario Maker 3DS was birthed from a test to see if Switch and Wii U server interaction was possible. It became an incomplete mess so they just put it out on 3DS.

I'm guessing Nintendo will try to be clever about the pricing.

I'd guess the Tablet + the Dock is what ships in a package for 249 USD. Detachable Controller will probably be another 59 bucks.

That'd feel 'cheap', so people will just buy it and not notice that the thing still costs more than a PS4 or a Xbox One.

I guess moving around the house but I have remote play for that already. I'm getting it still but its not as innovative as I originally believed it would be. Though my expectations were quite high.

Not necessarily - could be used for a resolution bump first and foremost (many games/engines support dynamic resolution on the fly for stable FPS). Could be used for added AA or IQ in general. No need to make a different version at all.
Don't count on it. See how quickly the screen switches over when you undock it. If the doc was doing anything, it wouldn't do it that quickly.

Maybe not every single one, but i'd assume the vast majority of them will. Look at how many remasters the PS4 has in it's collection. The PS3 was wildly more successful when compared to the Wii U. If the Switch is successful, there'd be so much untapped potential if these publishers didn't churn out these great games.

Well, I mean, we'll see what gets ported. It's kind of silly to me to just assume that ports are definitely happening of every game I care about.
There's some games that I honestly have a hard time imaging will get ports without needing significant changes.

I'm going to keep my WiiU regardless. I'm beyond the point of needing to trade it in to help buy a Switch, and I can easily justify keeping it around as another streaming box even if 90% of the games I have on it carry over to the Switch.

It's a system that might make sense for the Japanese market, but over here I'm not positive. It doesn't compete with tablets/phones and it doesn't compete with home consoles. It's in between.

What's going to save this system and make it sell is the lineup. To play these types of games on a portable might be a big win. Everything else, design wise, is just kind of puzzling.

My brain is having trouble articulating what is wrong with this concept.

I think maybe it's over-designed. When I think either console or handheld, the first thing that comes to mind is simplicity, but this has one thing coming out of another with two things coming out of that which go into something else altogether. It doesn't feel right.

This is astonishingly close to my mock-up design; right down to the central controller piece.

Though I'm not too happy we have to wait even longer for more information---prior to Switch's release in March is way too vague of a timeline---I think Nintendo did an excellent job of explaining their goals with this new hardware. It was clear that it was both a home and portable device, the games used to demonstrate it aren't just proof-of-concept software, and the overall vibe of the trailer expressed that this device wasn't just meant for kids. I still have many questions, but overall, I'm really happy with this first look.

Oh, and that sure does look a lot like Super Mario Galaxy 3 to me. Anyone else notice the giant moon (or other planetoid) and starry sky in the first bit of footage? Yeah.

Interesting design, but I like it. Being able to take your games on the go is a big plus. I'm guessing the system also has some kind of sleep mode like the Vita and 3DS.

My apologies if this has already been asked and answered, but is there any backwards compatibility with 3DS, since both systems use cartridges?

I don't see which demographics they are trying to catch with the detachable controllers.
An easier way to carry around.

But I don't see this as the traditional mobile gaming of 5 minute bursts in your commute. The handheld part seems that it could work for making the use of it comfortable for as many situations as possible. Move room to room, kill longer time between appointments/classes or any other situation where schedules and responsibilities give it value, and that you're not compromising the experience in terms of top end gaming.

I'd probably prefer to save money on a desktop only version without the need of the screen components and the rest, but that's not coming before 2018.

If the the price is 300$ I predict Wii U sales numbers

It's just a minor extra feature. They needed to have a controller that is small enough for a portable and they wanted people to be able to use that same controller when Docked. So the idea of detachable controllers came about.

If the the tablet just came with the pro controller it wouldn't be as portable.

The main thing is that you can get a Pro controller if you want.

That's probably a given. The stuff most likely to get ports/updated versions are the things with online MP that's still active like Splatoon, MK8, Smash etc.

Those make a lot of sense as there games that could sell to a lot of non-Wii U owners, and them coming to NX makes it easier for people playing those games to move on as they can sell/trade the Wii U to help fund their NX purchase.

How much of power difference is there when its docked versus when its not.

I noticed that the frame rate dropped on Zelda when it was undocked, and also, going by the patents, its supposed to be made stronger by a supplimental device.

Also, will all game be restricted to the limitations of the undocked system, or will there also be high end games games that only work when its docked?

I actually really like the Joy Cons. I like the kickstand, I like the options combining them brings.

If you want a more traditional controller, use the Pro. It'll work in portable mode too.

Based on absolutely nothing, my kneejerk reaction to Mario Maker 3DS is that it's gimped because they didn't want to undercut the Switch port. But you may be right.

I guess my girlfriend and I need to decide between sharing one at home and only one of us playing portable or buying two and having an unused dock.

Its one system, so I imagine it would be similar to your current situation. Taking turns, or buying a second system so that both can play different games at the same time.

Since the screen is definitely 6 inches and 720p I know it's less likely, but I am still holding out hope that the system has two different performance modes for when it's in mobile and docked modes.

The fact that there is a vent, the dock is rather beefy and they did not show any streaming from the device to the TV I think there is still a chance that the system will run underclocked when on the go and when it's docked it will run at greater performance to provide actual 1080p games and not up res'd 720p stuff.

For on the go device I expect better battery life, thin sleek form factor, awesome screen
We don't know the battery life, the design is pretty much as great as you can expect from a hybrid and a 6" 720p 10 point multitouch screen is AWESOME.

Very excited for this. Everything I've seen so far is what I had hoped for (and thanks to Eurogamer/WSJ, expected). Don't care too much about power so it being primarily a handheld doesn't concern me at all. I prefer to play games with the console in my hands, but not necessarily outside of my home and this is by far the best implementation of this idea on the market. Additionally many Nintendo games (especially Pokemon) are among my favourites so I know I'll get enough games to play even if third parties drop it again, especially now that the whole of Nintendo is working on one system and there are rumblings about Nintendo trying to make development much more efficient. Given Eurogamer was right about basically everything, I'm expecting it to be region-free but I'm awaiting an official announcement. 3DS/Wii U being region locked was by far the worst thing about them for me.

Only real concern is the price, hope that gets announced soon. If I can find it for £250 I'll get it day one, otherwise I'll wait until I can. Oh, and I do hope Virtual console purchases will be fully transferable without paying an upgrade fee. If not, I simply won't be using the VC again.

It seems pretty much confirmed when you compare stuff running on the tv to the handheld in the trailer

(Post got lost on end of previous page so let me try again...)

Is there anything stopping Nintendo from having a home console only version of the Nintendo Switch? Let's say for the sake of this discussion that the screen doesn't have any form of touch. If that's the case, there isn't really anything offered by the Switch that developers will cater to and design their games around, right? That would mean every game would be played the same on the television as they would on the tablet minus some potential multiplayer functionally you would utilize on the go.

Personally, I have no interest in gaming on the go. I'd be much more interested in this thing if the hybrid part was removed entirely and it was just a box with a port for game cards that played great looking Nintendo games on my big screen with the new Pro controller.

Would any of you want a home console version of the Nintendo Switch like myself and do you think Nintendo would think of offering it? If the traditional Switch releases at $350, but the home console only version releases at $250 I would be there day one.

One thing I'm curious about are things like account system and online. Will the account system be non console specific now (and let you sell/rebuy as you wish and move your account about) and will the online be free or will they charge like Sony and Microsoft. Guess those details will be coming in the future.

I don't think those amazon preorders are going live til they get a price out there. It might be a little bit. FYI they have had a page for their classic NES console up for at least a month and no preorders yet.
