I don't see them doing a dockless SKU- on top of it being advertised as a core aspect of the system, unless there's something crazy going on in it it's probably not that expensive to produce compared to the console itself. The thing you plug the side controllers in for TV mode may have a decent cost attached, but again, the whole idea here is that it's a portable/console hybrid, making an SKU that effectively only has what you need for portable play doesn't really make sense.

They'll need to do an entry cost level version though.

When Pokémon comes out, if it's like $250/$300 still, then that's going to seriously dent their most popular franchise.

I fully expect a portable only version, smaller, perhaps with a dock that can be purchased if necessary

My thoughts. After slightly obsessively following NX rumour threads that was pretty underwhelming. The device was everything it needed to be. (Yay)

Actual design is OK but playing portably looks akward.

Id love a clambshell design with an extra battery. Maybe the next itteration.

The name sucks. It feels like Switch should hve been the code name and NX the actual name. Or even NES or NES 2 to capatalise on the marketing boost created by the Nes Mini.

If the "tablet" got hdmi couldn't I just use a hdmi cable to hook it up To a tv. Like i take it to my parents place with Mario kart, hook it up, use the both controllers and of we go on the tv?

What is the charging source, is it microUSB or like the DS that I can buy a USB>D connector thing to take with me and use my phone charger?

I'm a parent of two little kids. My favorite thing about Wii u was off tv play. This is like that on steroids. I can't wait.

Hope the battery is user replaceable

What the shit?

I thought you mentioned you were done with that "shit company" because the Switch does not support DVD?

???????????????????

Everything but the pro controller is likely needed and will be bundled.

And more expensive bundles I imagine would be more internal storage or pack-in games.

This what I would expect except the pro controller should also be included as the home console controller.

This could be the problem Nintendo are creating by trying to be all things in one. Leaving aside specs just the sheer number of parts it needs for all hybrid functionality could cause price issues. If it means splitting it up into bundles that could hurt them.

Brilliant, just brilliant.

I'm all yours Nintendo, and i haven't been since DS.

Just make a Handheld-only SKU (no Dock) for 249€ and i'm in Day One.

Well, its either a cable.... or a cable/dock/power adapter/controller to accomplish the same thing

But hdmi out would arguably have been easier, and no need to purchase extra docks right?

Anyway I'm cool with how things are. I have my consoles connected to one tv. The NS will give me the flexibility of playing that exact same game wherever I am.

Cross play, remote play etc are not as easy as removing the console from the dock and playing on the go. You're also limited to framerate, and buttons on the Vita.

But if people prefer the Vita, or they hate the NS, then that's ok. I'm happy so that's all that matters. I bought the Wii U which was apparently a piece of shit.

Can't imagine it being cheaper than the nvidia shield, especially considering the NX is basically just a copy of the shield.

I'm guessing 349/399$ USD.

So Dual screen games are dead? I just can't see they would kill of the DS/3DS line with this. Obviously you can't play 3DS games on the go, no 2nd screen/no touch either. It literally carried the company this generation.

I hope 3DS developers make the same type of games for the Switch as they did for previous handhelds.

I'm hyped but will wait and see.

uh... why wouldn't the tablet be touch?

as for dual screen games... those have been dead forever.
very few games since the DS launched made good use of the second screen. they typically just shoved something on there that could easily be done in a start menu.

beyond that, if someone really wants to make a dual screen game... well it could be home console dock only I assume as that would still be dual screen.

or heck... the damn tablet is large enough... they could just have you turn it sideways and split the tablet in half to make two screen.

If I want great graphics, VR, and tons of western AAA support, I'll use my PS4. Switch is going to serve the same niche as the 3DS and Wii U and be home to a lot of RPGs, Indies, Japanese games, and of course, Nintendo stuff.

Nintendo doesn't need VR to be successful. It will have it's own unique brand of games.

This right here.

Does the dock gives more power o not

Unlikely.

The only way the NS will have more power is down to the Nvidia chip downclocking itself while on the go, and then going full power when docked.

There's no way there's extra cpu or gpu power on the dock itself aside from providing hdmi out, usb, and potentially hdd storage that's all it will be.

The "brain" of the device is the handheld portion in my opinion.

Should I do it?

I bought a Wii u for less, with Mario kart and Zelda ww. Just wait and see what games get ported to the Nintendo switch.

So, i've waited a little to give my feeling about it. As usual it will more be about the way i think it could work or not, than my personal needs and enthusiasm about it. Also it will be cold hearted.

What could make it a success:
_The fact that it's a really capable portable, like never before, and it'll have amazing Nintendo games on it with full production value
_The fact that it allows for never seen before local multi for many games, Splatoon, MK and i hope way more? That's the real strengh here, nothing else. That's local play by LAN that allowed Monster Hunter to sell 4 millions in Japan. Same for Pokemon Go. Build a strong community of player that can play locally together.

The weakness is obviously the whole detachable controller that seems to seduce nobody (not the one with a hub but the half ones). THAT right there is that little thing Nintendo always does. Designing the whole console, restraining it around one single thing that you absolutely want but nobody will really like it. Like the 3D in the 3DS, like the of tv play on WiiU. Actually my bad, 3D and off tv play are awesome, BUT they never sold the console enough to justify the concessions they needed. This time, it seems even worse when you think about it. I mean the idea to be able to play on the go with one console is cool, potentially.. But will it take on ? Will the console be well designed for kids to use that feature ? Will gamers accept to play with those horrible mini pads ? Will casual gamers care? WIll the cost of the console even allows it to touch occasional gamers ? This is really uncharted territory here. I could see it being a good idea that never worked in reality.. and never touched his audience.

The other big weakness is how they are basically telling everyone "This is a WiiU". They show us 3 games that are on WiiU, with the same visuals, + a Mario game that seemingly could run on WiiU without any problem. That's the reveal of the machine. So they are absolutely assuming the portable WiiU aspect. Except if they market it as a portable, as a new 3ds, that's fine. But as a "home console" as they said, it's going to be bloodbath. I mean Nintendo fans will buy it but guys but others.. (i just had a friend on the phone who is an ex nintendo fans, you know the usual "i regret the Nintendo of the 90's", and he was pretty violent with it. basically saying "i don't give a shit and Nintendo is dead to me." i'm telling you that cause we don't always see how guys outside that circle see things)
Let's say one part of the job with that new console was to cut any bad WiiU connection for people. Well this is TERRIBLE from that pov! The worse they could have done.

An other unknown data, and a BIG risk for Nintendo. Take the console as a japanese successor to the 3ds and NS. I mean, look at the NDS, then the 3DS, who was already less appealing and more gamy, then look at that. I really don't know how the japanese market will receive it, as a stand alone portable. The whole Local play could be HUGE there but the design hmm, who knows... Never forget the NDS became a phenomenon on Japan only after the Lite redesign. Cosmetics count.

Anyway i'll stop there but in a sense, what i'm saying is, in my opinion this thing can find a way to a success, probably more than the WiiU in its time, cause the concept is just more modern and unique, but it also have all the little seeds for absolute failure. This is a risky move for Nintendo.

I hope they ditched their proprietary stuff and use USB-C to charge it up. That way one could easily use a Power bank to keep playing on the go. Not perfect but better than let's say 4h of battery life.

I like the idea of making two versions of it to sell. Make it as accessible as possible and people will buy it. If they try to make it the same price as the PS4 it's dead on arrival

To play its exclusive games. I already own Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and New Super Mario Wii U + Luigi U.
Well yes, but I also don't understand why you guys waited until now. It was heavily hinted for a long time now that the NX won't be backwards compatible and won't be using discs.

Better late than never, I suppose. Enjoy it, great system.

Since portable gaming is all the rage in japan, i can see the switch been extremely popular over there. Can you image Monster Hunter on this thing?

Is it safe to assume that you can use multiple joy-cons on just one system and split them to have 8 local players?

I like the idea of a duality of being a handheld for dedicated solo player games and an easy set-up for multiplayer games for parties.

The split joy con strips look kind of small, but hopefully it's not too cumbersome.

I think this could be a solution to Jim Sterling's issue with next-gen consoles ditching cost and convenience advantage trying to be more like gaming PC's.

The whole package is a lot better than I was expecting honestly.... I'm digging it as a portable because most of that gaming is done at home, as a console because it's done there too lol. "Appears" to have "support" from third parties...*ahem*... and let's face it, design/aesthetically it really looks sweet. The name couldn't be more obvious, "switching" from one mode to another to suit busy or on the go people....

...it's early but I'm hoping it's a win for Nintendo.

No bald cap? Lies!
As I said in the now closed price thread I hope the pricing goes like this:

Base SKU: $249 w/ pack in game(like Wii Sports)
Pro SKU: $300 w/ pack in game and Pro Controller(maybe higher internal storage ~128gb)

Then they could also have special editions like a BotW bundle for $350 which is just the pro SKU with some Zelda skin and the game bundled in with it. Maybe a Splatoon or Mario Kart version as well.

If they don't have a pack in game for all SKUs then I would reduce the price for each SKU by $50. I can't see them being able to really sell this as well as they need to at $250 for the system alone, no game.

They need to have some kind of software bundled with all versions that really sells the at home and on the go multiplayer ability of the system. Preferably something new that all sorts of people can pickup and play.

I despise the misaligned left and right analog sticks. Why the hell would they do this to their Pro Controller when they executed it perfectly last-gen?

Starting with GameCube, Nintendo has shown preference for asymmetric sticks. Wii U GamePad was probably designed as it is so the sticks wouldn't be so in the way for either hand trying to reach the touch screen, and its Pro Controller kept the same layout for consistency.

How big are the chances of the battery being removable? Would hate for a whole console to just die after a couple of years and be dependent on the charger
I don't think Nintendo has done otherwise on a portable or controller yet.

The "console style games on the go" argument was lost with Vita already, and people decided 99 cent smartphone games were preferrable.
Vita didn't differentiate enough from consoles (as the mobile games do), but it also had to directly compete with its own brother home console. Other than a few digital cross-buy things, a person would be in the situation of choosing to console-style at home or console-style with Vita, and it seems the home one won. In this case, it's not a competition. Well, at least not a Nintendo vs Nintendo one.

Even then you still got to question why they would purposely make it so the frame rate looked lower when in portable mode.
I think trying to read too much framerate information from a 24fps YouTube video is not the best idea.
eot said:
Kinda weird that they're showing it running Skyrim. Who's gonna buy this thing to play a five year old game?
As someone who's gotten into Bethesda-style open world games in the last few years, their absence on portables has been one of the biggest gaps. To NOT have it on Switch when they're rereleasing it for PS4/Xbone would be a missed opportunity. I also don't think it's bad for Nintendo to point out they're getting support from a major developer who didn't touch their previous hardware.

Come on 32GB of memory in 2017 ? That's like one game.
So get a 64 GB SD card for $10, upgrade it for double the capacity at the same price each year. Extra storage is cheap, and those who need it can get it.

holy shit that dog. probably needs half my months salary for food.

as far as the console goes: I'm really liking it. looks pretty neat tbh. I was already on the verge of buying a Wii U, this time I actually might.

One platform is the smart thing to do for Nintendo. While they have some third party support, Nintendo is pretty much supporting their home consoles by themselves and this allows them to focus on a single platform going forward.
