As I said in the now closed price thread I hope the pricing goes like this:

Base SKU: $249 w/ pack in game(like Wii Sports)
Pro SKU: $300 w/ pack in game and Pro Controller(maybe higher internal storage ~128gb)

Then they could also have special editions like a BotW bundle for $350 which is just the pro SKU with some Zelda skin and the game bundled in with it. Maybe a Splatoon or Mario Kart version as well.

If they don't have a pack in game for all SKUs then I would reduce the price for each SKU by $50. I can't see them being able to really sell this as well as they need to at $250 for the system alone, no game.

They need to have some kind of software bundled with all versions that really sells the at home and on the go multiplayer ability of the system. Preferably something new that all sorts of people can pickup and play.

I appreciate the speculation! I think your pricing is pretty spot on, though I personally don't think we'll get a "pro" bundle with the Pro controller bundled. I think we'll see something like this:

NS base package - $249 - Console (32GB) + pack-in game, no Joy-con base
NS "Deluxe" package - $299 - Console (64GB) + pack-in game + Joy-con base
NS "Deluxe" bundle - $349 - Console (64GB) + pack-in game + Zelda + Joy-con base

I just think it would be too easy and profitable for Nintendo to sell the pro controller on its own. I'm not so sure about the joy-con base unit though. That could be something they include with all consoles or decide to consider an accessory. I assumed it was the latter for my speculation. I wonder when we'll get pricing and pre-orders?! I wanna lock my reserve in right now!

Probably been asked but so.. no disk based games?

At this point I'd be convinced to rebuy all my Wii U games if they ported them. At a discount of course. Maybe a "proof of ownership" program where I can prove I own the games and get them for $20 or something.

So is the console itself inside the screen then? Is the thing it sits in just a dock then?

Give me Mario 3D World 2.

I'm sure someone else has already mentioned it, but thank god it's not called SWiitch or some other dumb Wii-variant name.

Interesting idea, but I'm not really too keen on it just yet. I do hope it does well for Nintendo.

I don't think it'll be a touchscreen.

They already need to design games without touch functionality since the screen is docked when you're playing.

Why would you have a tablet without a touch screen though? I mean I get the portability but it is LITERALLY a modern tablet without the side controllers.

And what is the first thing humans do when they see a tablet? They poke its screen.

This would seem like a major missed opportunity to me...

Sorry if I'm late with this, but Laura Kate Dale is saying that the dock will have additional processing power. As such, Laura said to expect it to take a few seconds for the Switch to, well, switch to the TV when docked.

I'm not buying it. The dock has no extra processing power.

I'm calling it right now. The "extra power" or any differences in power will come from the handheld Nvidia soc down clocking itself while on the go to promote better battery life, and then go to full speed whilst docked.

No way in hell is there any cpu or gpu hardware or soc on the dock itself. The most the dock will have (aside from usual like usb etc) is perhaps additional storage.

I was just entering this thread to say they should have called it the sWiitch...haha

Honestly all I care about is that it looks like they are bringing true, N64 style 3d Mario back. That's a big selling point to me. The main selling point.

I'm gonna be real disappointed if they totally ditch motion controls and touch screen. would be a pretty bizarre move to not at least leave the option there

Touchscreen is almost certain, though Laura Dale is claiming that all games will have to be playable with the tablet docked, meaning that they won't be allowed to require touch controls.

Motion controls, well, it's possible that Ubi is making a version of Just Dance that requires their smartphone controller app, but that seems unlikely.

don't need disks, Skyrim is going to run in this thing

This thing seems really risky for Nintendo. You have the Nintendo diehards that will buy anything they put out (around 15 million people or so). Assuming they bought the Wii U and 3DS, that's 15 million "guaranteed" sales they've lost due to combining the two systems. A flop with this hurts them tremendously as they've thrown all their eggs into the same basket.

Not only that, as I said earlier, rather than leveraging the DS line and making it a portable that has TV play, they've basically taken the WiiU, removed the touch screen and allowed off TV play anywhere.

So I'm not sure why anyone other than existing WiiU owners will buy this. That includes me mind you. I like my WiiU. But I just figured that for Nintendo to have true success again, they'd leverage their dominance in the portable market as opposed to their failure in the home console market.

The detachable controllers is genius; its an excellent idea that goes well with Nintendo's "play with your actual real friends philosophy".

This is likely already been discussed, but it seems like there isn't any possibility for Wii U-like "two screen" capabilities, right? Since the tablet screen has to be placed in the dock for it to show up on the TV screen.

Yeah, that's probably far more likely. Mostly I don't want to drop probably close to $50 on a controller if I don't have to so I'm hoping they bundle it.

I'm hoping for 3rd party games of course, but what has me drooling is the ability to play all my Ninty games on a single device, either at home or on the go, and the Nintendo game release cadence now that they'll be focusing on one platform.

DROOOOOOOOOOOL

Some thoughts, as someone who plays mainly on portable :
- Too big
- RIP clamshell design
- Headphone jack coming from the top of the screen seems like a bad idea to me
- Wondering if you'll need to buy 2 docks if you want just want a second portable system / or to use as a controller?

I guess I'm in for the games though.

the dock did seem pretty sizable for a simple power/hdmi out...maybe there's a seperate fan on it as well as the additional power boost

Well the tweet is pretty clear that there is additional power when docked. She doesn't say there is extra hardware. Either way it's great news if true.

To be fiar any move would be risk to Nintendo, they took what it seems the less risky and logical one.

Actually no, i think designing a more traditional portable, still really good with local multi, powerfull (with splatoon and all), without the detachable part, with a good "cute" look and not too expansive would have been safer for their biggest market right now.

Gaf gets more interesting every day, I've seen it all.

Lmao

it will have extra power to upscale the tablet to native 1080 at least

It may offload some other tasks like networking and controller synching and of course active cooling and removing power management like you said, but I don't think it is going to do anything directly on the data buses like a coprocessor type thing. If there is a clear picture of the docking connector, it may be easier to infer.

I'm down for this! I would be extremely surprised if we don't see some form for "loyalty" program for Wii-U owners. At the very least I think we'll get something for having bought digital copies of certain Wii-U games. At the most, I could see them doing a partnership with Gamestop where you can trade in a physical copy of X game for a discount or free copy of the NS version.

I wouldn't be surprised if further marketing attempts will rather put the focus on mobile gaming.

The Switch can't compete with the two other consoles in anyway.

Its so crazy to see Nintendo finally make a console that the average joe gamer can look at and find attractive. My friends are really into the idea of playing Skyrim or Smash Bros on the go, and they're not even big Nintendo fans. Good to see Nintendo listening to the market and criticism for once, it's a big change and beautiful to see after enduring years of the clueless arrogance we Nintendo fans have had to put up with for years.

Well the tweet is pretty clear that there is additional power when docked. She doesn't say there is extra hardware. Either way it's great news if true.

I'd say it's pretty much a safe bet to have increased performance while docked, but only down to the clock frequency adjusting as opposed to having extra hardware.

Regardless of what it is, I'm super happy at this reveal. I can't wait to get my hands on it and play some Mario Kart, Mario 3d and Zelda.

Looks good. I'm mainly a handheld player nowadays. names fine, doesn't matter tho, everything sounds bad at first until we get use to it. I also like the look of it. Seems small and neat.

Can't wait for Fire Emblem Switch.

So what's the general reaction so far? gaf is struggling to load where I am at so I can't read some of the impressions.

Considering they just came out and said it's a "home console first and foremost" I can't see them releasing a dockless SKU, or multiple SKUs of any time really, at least not at launch. The entire focus of that 3 minute trailer was on the core concept of gaming at home and on the go. The console is called Switch for crying out loud. You expect them to release a Switch SKU that removes the thing that lets you "switch"?

Yeah its funny reading some of these reactions. It is like a grenade went off too close to people and they are shell shocked or something with some of these dumb hopes and dreams.

Can you elaborate on what you believe the difference is? If it has to do with the size of the unit, I'm sure there will be a smaller unit in the future on the same "Switch" platform.

When we first started hearing about the hybrid concept I know I imagined a clamshell design that looked more like a 3DS that could be docked and run on TV. The hardware would obviously be able to push console level graphics but would also have a more portable form factor than what the Switch offers. So a design that focused more on portability than home console.

That being said, I'm more than happy with what we are getting with the Switch. It's still very much what I wanted from Nintendo.
