Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

A game like zskyrim does make me wonder how that's going to work with cartridges (that I guess are glorified SD cards. How big is Skyrim? 25GB maybe, maybe more? Let's hope the system has significant HDD space inside or come supporting normal SD cards for disc storage, the latest ones that can go up to terabytes (not that anyone could afford one anytime soon.

Wow, the name is just..wow. Maybe they can win a Darwin-Award with this name. Unbelievable.

But then to the concept. It looks as if Nintendo at least thought this thing through. You have detachable controllers, you can use it as a monitor and so on. But now the "buts" are starting.

How is this portable? This is a 6" screen with controllers. Nothing I can fit into my jeans. Nothing I want to wear around.

And how is this hybrid beneficial to me? The custom tegra chip makes it harder for devs to port games on it and we all know how it ended with the Wii U. It was just to slow and Publishers have already a 60 Mio. fanbase with ps4 and xbox one. So why would they need to support the Switch?

In the end you have a home console which is way to weak, because it has to be portable. But you don't want to play big home console games on the go, because they don't fit. It was the same with the Vita. Uncharted was a great game on the Vita. But why should I play it on the Vita when I could theoretically play it on my big screen with a great sound? The argument also works the other way. I don't need to play Pokemon on the big screen, because it's already looking bad on the small screen and you have different expectations on the big screen.

I'm not convinced.

YESSSS!

They chose 3 ports of their 1st party titles, 1 5 year old port of a western 3rd party title and one 3rd party title.
Ports? I agree with Zelda though it haven't even launched yet, but Mario kart had different character and 2 item slots which was new and Splatoon sure looked like an upgrade...

But yeah if we believe you Nintendo is doomed again....

Honestly, the thing I'm most excited about is having Nintendo primarily focusing on one platform. I mostly play my handhelds at home as it is, so having all of Nintendo's new games on the Switch will be nice. I'm also optimistic we'll finally get that mainline Pokemon game on consoles that I've always wanted, and I'm oddly excited to see Fire Emblem on consoles again, even if gameplay-wise it won't really benefit from more powerful hardware.

I'm curious to see how it'll be received by people who actually game on the go frequently. Normally whenever I play my handhelds somewhere other than my house, it's when I'm traveling, so it's easy to put my 3DS or Vita in my bag, which I'll also do with the Switch, but I can see why others might not really think of it as an acceptable successor to the 3DS.

I'm still a bit worried they'll do something dumb to cripple the system, but overall I'm pretty excited by the concept and the idea of having Nintendo focus on one platform.

Now... Can I finally have a new Wave Race game? Please?

I feel the same, I know it does not matter a lot but I love having Fire Emblem on the big screen! Hope they make some good FE games for the Switch (and perhaps, if possible, allow the 3ds games to be played on it).

The name is the only thing I'm 100% sold on. First Nintendo home console name that isn't WTFy since Nintendo 64.

Love the name. So pleasant. So informative.

The Nintendo Switch. The Switch. That thing created from the ground-up to accommodate a more mobile but also still traditional console experience.

Also, love the logo and the sound effects that come with it. :P

I'm struggling to feel anything but "meh". It looks like we expected, they showed glimpses of first party titles that could've probably been on the Wii U and one port that'll be months old by the time it releases.

I'm not sure who this is for, other than Nintendo fans who swerved the Wii U because it wasn't slick enough. But then, if you were a Nintendo fan, you probably would've bought the Wii U as its first party output is fantastic.

The whole sell of gaming on the go with hip young kids seems weirdly out of step with the dominance of smartphone gaming - they've already got a device that fits in their pockets that'll be used to kill time, so lugging a tablet controller won't be their preference.

It seems like a jack of all trades, a bit of a Mulligan for the missed shot that was the Wii U. It's better in design, and the fact that software talent won't be stretched between handheld and home console will result in more titles, but I've a feeling it's a solution to Nintendo's problem, rather than a problem a huge number of consumers really have.

Either way, if the pricing is right, it'll sell. Hopefully Nintendo haven't got their hands tied by poor deals being struck and currency fluctuations this time. At £200/$200 it'll fly off the shelves, at least in the short term.

A game like Skyrim does make me wonder how that's going to work with cartridges (that I guess are glorified SD cards). How big is Skyrim? 25GB maybe, maybe more? Let's hope the system has significant HDD space inside or comes supporting normal SD cards for disc storage, the latest ones that can go up to terabytes (not that anyone could afford one anytime soon). If you're downloading games like that it should have 250GB storage out the box I personally think. And I don't see this happening.

God I do love the look of this, I hope Nintendo hit it out the park.

EDIT: sorry for double post. I'd X'd my window (iPad) before it uploaded, or so I thought to correct a mistake and add more...

seems like an easy sell. NES/SNES add ons with traditional dpad for anyone interested in playing retro games, GC button layout... lots of possibilities.

This will be a fantastic home console, but I can't see it replacing the 3DS (Or a similar successor) as a portable.

Just looking at it, this will come nowhere near the portability of the 3DS. Even with an XL, I can just grab a 3DS on my way out and slip it in my pocket. To carry the switch around with me I'll have to detach the controller parts from the controller, put them and the tablet into a carry case, put that carry case into a backpack, then carry a backpack with me everywhere I go.

There is no difference between digital and physical BC.
Not gonna read this page of posts to find out what you're responding to.

But this only accepts cartridges, which means Wii U discs don't work, but with them being all about us having Nintendo accounts and all that, I'd be really surprised if we couldn't play games from our digital libraries on here.

I don't know if the remaster inflates the size, but the PC version of Skyrim is actually relatively small. Mind you, I'm just talking the vanilla version with no mods or DLC, but it was only like 5GB.

- I can play games anywhere. This is totally a trend in technology in general, access your stuff from anywhere, no matter whether we talk about clouds for our documents and photos, Xbox Play Anywhere or the Switch concept now. Totally right to jump onto this, espacially in a society that is increasingly mobile and on the go, working here today and tomorrow there. How cool is it to bring your home console experience with you? That's why I hope home console-style games will be frequent.
It's somewhat of a trend, but others that have tried this in the same way have not been that successful yet, at least not in the consumer landscape. Surface Pro / docking stations for notebooks seem to be the only comparable popular products and they're most successful for businesses.

If you look at Apple / Google, they make it so that the data is all in the cloud, saves or game states can be shared, games can be installed on all devices, but you still have a dedicated device for each situation. This optimizes controls / size / power for each situation.

Using a home console that is also a portable, makes the home console side slower and more expensive.

(Of course, buying two separate devices is way more expensive, but each device is uncompromised and not everyone needs those two separate ones)

okay can you link me to where I can find information saying those three first party clips were ports

Both Splatoon and MK looked identical to the previous ones on Wii U, right down to the assets and UI style. Now I agree, it's too early to tell if these brings meaningful improvements. But it either looked like enhanced ports or really safe sequels.

I forget the exact details of Cartridge discussions that have been had before, but space shouldn't really be an issue.

Skyrim Remastered on PS4 and Xbone at 20 and 17gb respectively. So the Switch version shouldn't be all that different.

I'm curious now if they'll allow for mods on the Switch since that's a big thing for Bethesda right now and big selling point besides the improved graphics of Skyrim Remastered.

I keep seeing this. Meanwhile, outside, I see tons of people with big ass Iphone 6/7 plus phones and Samsung Notes. I see families with a kid holding a tablet in tow.

I think these comments are now reaching. Not to mention the tons of people who go out and about with small backpacks and the like. Come on now.

I will be shocked if digital Wii U games run on this.

who can put a 3DS in their jeans pocket comfortably anyway?

Blu-ray max size is 50gb, right?

There a rough guess as to what these cartridges could potentially hold?

I will be shocked if digital Wii U games run on this.
So while Microsoft and Sony are releasing console upgrades for this gen that include free patches that improve the performance and visuals of previously released titles, Nintendo's gonna release new versions of Splatoon and Mario Kart that everybody's gotta buy again?

It's insane to me that people are still managing to be negative about what is literally Wii/DS 2.0. It's going to print money regardless if you think hybrid is a bad idea or not. This is the natural evolution in gaming. Home gaming will be primarily PC/VR, handheld will be Switch.

You're getting way too caught up in the excitement waaaay too early.

Take a step back for a second, and try and look at it a little more objectively.

Think about it. The WiiU, failed DISMALLY. This console, at first glance, looks like a WiiU with off TV being able to work anywhere. At best, that puts it at selling above the WiiU, but possibly below GameCube numbers. I still feel and most likely always will, that Ninyendo should have made this thing a powerful DS with TV play.

I really have no idea why people think the name is bad.

It's punchy. It's easy to remember. It's a clean break from previous Nintendo consoles, and won't get confused with any other console. It perfectly encapsulates the console's entire marketing message in a single one-syllable word. It isn't a euphemism for urine, nor is it the sound an ambulance makes.

Seems like a perfectly fine name to me.

People view their phones as essential multi use devices. I'm not sure those same people would be okay with carrying around a dedeicated gaming tablet and controller on the off chance they might find the time to game on the bus or while in a waiting room. Granted it's still portable, but that's not a valid comparison.

That's great! I want the standard d-pad so this makes things better.

This right here.

Lots of detachable things = easier to break, lost parts and harder to make reliable. Nintendo has balls I give them that. Certainly nobody else was going this direction.

Yeah, a 5 year old game that will get a remaster. A new Mario game, which is basically the main attraction here, the New Zelda which also release on their previous platform and what looked an awful lot like Splatoon on Wii U. My point is basically that if software is king, Nintendo basically unveiled their new platform with a 5 year old game, 3 to 4 ports and a 3D Mario game. If these were the biggest representants for Switch, yeah, I don't feel like it smells good software wise.
Your making assumptions by calling those games ports, but I would argue that showing 2k and Bethesda games was smart.

This was just a teaser and they aren't announcing games so I think you're reading too much into it.

I'm into it! Having such a large screen portable, a seamless portable/home experience with one machine, and a kickstand/controller mode is all goodness. It's the best hardware idea Nintendo has had in a long time. The first home console that doesn't require a TV, and the first dockable portable (by the big three; Shield doesn't count) -- the flexibility of use actually justifies having a separate piece of gaming hardware from my Steam machine!

Now I just hope that perf stays consistent and that the chipset can actually produce good visuals.

Haven't been stoked for a Nintendo console launch in some time. Feels good. I'm weird and old, but this is actually exactly the hybrid console I was hoping for.

Im in! That was a fantastic trailer. I'm not interested in how powerful it is or whether it can match PS4/XBO - all that matters is the end user experience. It's more versatile than the others be default.

It's like they took the concept of the PS4-PSVita remote play, and just bundled it into one system with detachable controllers. Nintendo always gets a lot of stick on most gaming forums, and I'm usually one of their harshest critics. But that trailer symbolises what Nintendo is about.

Innovation that makes sense.

EDIT: And they have 3rd party support! Get in :)

Because nintendos IPs are not as strong as you think they are with the crowd that games on PS4/Xbox/PC. People need to drop this delusion that time stood still between the n64 and now and that audience is just waiting with bated breath for the Nintendo of the early to mid 90s to come back. The world moves on. To the 18-34 year old crowd that Sony and Ms covet, Nintendo is synomouous with Pokemon and Wii. To that crowd, as much as it might hurt you to hear it, IPs like Gears of War, GTA, CoD and Madden are more important than Mario and Zelda, as are the existing PSN/XboxLive/Steam ecosystems they've bought into.

I'm just glad and happy that Nintendo doesn't just chase that crowd with typical AAA games. It'll be fun to see how they continue to differentiate themselves with the variety of games they offer.

Also, can we reflect back on some of the rumors now? Lol how the hell did someone look at the Switch and then create a "works and connects with PC and PS4" rumor?

I get why Nintendo went this way, since they really can't compete on a pure power front with the other two big players. But damn, that's one ugly console and the gimmick just doesn't seem all that mind-blowing.

So I can play console games on the go? Okay. Fantastic. Do I really want to? I mean, when I'm on the go, I'm usually only looking for a brief distraction; a bite-sized bit of fun, like I get with a mobile game on my phone. Plus, with my phone, when I'm bored, I can surf the web, study for an upcoming test, check my bank statement, photoshop a picture, or do any number of other things.

My point is, I can't see the benefit of this. Mobile phone gaming took off the way it did (and has weakened the stand-alone handheld market in the process) because it offers short bursts of entertainment on a device that does much, much more than games. Which leaves the Switch vulnerable to being ignored by the mobile market.

There is a lot of space between console games that wouldn't translate to an ideal mobile experience and mobile games which are meant to be played in short bursts.
You see a lot of those types of in-between games pop up on mobile, but they're absolutely awful to play usually. The kind of games that simulate on-screen joysticks and whatnot. Those are the kinds of games that still lend themselves to short burst playtimes, but can also be sat down and played for an hour or more without it becoming repetitive.

Indie games, I suppose you'd call them now (but I don't like that term, since it's become something of an umbrella term for "mid-tier gaming"). There has been some major stratification of games in the last decade or so, where you have super high budget games on consoles and the cheap stuff on mobile where more often than not, it's garbage. And because of mobile's crappy controls, you've lost that middle ground. There's no ideal way to really distribute them. They always feel like a second rate experience, you know?
Those sort of games could flourish on Switch since it provides the small screen and portability of mobile, but the controls of console.

I do agree that playing console games on a portable device stinks. It's a bad experience. I like the Wii U, but whenever I have to look at the screen and not the TV for most any game, I stop enjoying it, for the most part.
