So my only question is how is does it compare in power to the other consoles? Are we talking Wii U power or Xbone power?

Wii U just got beat out for worst console name. Switch? Really?

The hardware looks cool though.

Less than Xbone.

Very noob and lttp question:

Is this Nintendo's new console (NX), or some new mobile (3DS) thing ?

Somewhat unsure with how most news are describing the machine.

You already know the answer to that, surely? Seeing as every single news outlet has reported this as 'Nintendo finally announces NX: the Nintendo Switch'.

There is something i dont understand.

Im no Tech expert but the Xbox One is a true home system using modern ish architecture, and many of its games run at 900p or below.
Why are many people talking like they expect the Switch, an impressive but mostly portable device, to play alot of 1080 p games when the Xbox cant?

The fact that this system is even comparable to Xbox One is impressive to me
I can see Nintendo optimizing some of their games for 1080p with Wii U like graphics, but the most power hungry ones, those would make sense
to run at 720p like the main device.

Unless im missing something 😕
Huge grain of salt:
Pascal based.
3 times less powerful than XB1 mainly by being greatly memory bandwidth starved.504p is the minimun resolution required by Nintendo and what most games will use:

If there is no touch screen, how will we make Mario?

Serious question. That game needs to live forever in some way.

Nintendo withholding this from E3 this year turned out to be a good move. You just know MS and Sony are now trying to copy this thing but that ship has already sailed. Even if they copy this, it will take at least two years before they have a product out on the market.

As I see it, for this to work and have huge success they need to do a few things:
1)A good battery life. If they are going to push it as a system you share, the battery life should hold up.
2)Docks sold separately. If the dock is just a charger and a way to output video, it should be pretty cheap to produce and sell. This should be a console you game on the way to your next destination's tv with ease.
3) Bring their handheld divisions on board. I'm not sure support from 3rd parties will be there, so maximize output by employing your handheld developers.
4) Fortune motherfucking Street. Bring that shit to this console. No seriously. They have to make appealing local multiplayer games. This is a community system, they are masters of local play and this continues the trend. They need to really push it now that there is no restrictions anymore.
No need to lug around a bulky console and tons of cords, you have a portable community center here with removable controllers so at lease two can play together anywhere.

After the holiday season, I hope they embrace the portability of their new console.

I personally feel like if the console had motion controls it'd be called the Swiitch. The logo can easily support the two i's too. So... no motion controls?

This mock was so close. And it was pretty much the consensus best mock at the time too. Nintendo finally knows what they're doing.

I probably would have called the console NS though.

They can say whatever they want, it's running a tablet SOC and internal storage is going to be limited due to the form factor. I'd much rather have a pure home console with better performance and no need for SD cards or external hard drives than optional portability, but it is what it is.

I think that even if it was a "true home console" we would still have to purchase an external HDD. Nintendo seems fine with leaving that option for the player. I can't disagree with that, either. I feel really constrained by my HDD in the PS4 and in the end I'll have to add more storage anyway since games eat up so much space. Either that or be constantly managing the "fridge". If the specs while docks are respectable, then I'll be there day one. Otherwise I'll wait for a Pokemon game since that's why my wife would want to have one.

If you're going to go here, you might as well post this as well:

"This isn't necessarily true. A downclocked Tegra X2 (at about 850 MHz), should have fairly balanced bandwidth and throughput, with both being roughly 1/3 of the Xbox One. Its a fair bit better than X1 in this regard, as that SoC has only half the bandwidth of X2 (whilst having more than half the throughput)."

Microsoft would only need to enable remote play at the same quality as their in home streaming via the Xbox app to have the same features.

Hell, they demoed Halo 4 being streamed to a mobile years ago.

Branding is pretty good, honestly. A huge improvement from "Wii U," "3DS," and "New 3DS." Very clear and straightforward what it is, Switch sounds good and reflects the

As a kid from the south who was always threatened with a switch (long thin tree branch, for those who don't know), I wince a bit when I hear the word. It's okay, but feels like a weird word to evoke the multi-use aspect of the console. But Nintendo have never been great at naming things.

The main branding problem I had with the trailer (beyond the logo stuff I mentioned before) is the lack of diversity – white guy, white guy, a group of white guys, one white girl being flirted with, back to white guys, one black guy who looks like he's in a Kid n Play tribute group.

This would never work with bandwith caps being as they are at present.

Does this unify Nintendo's home & portable output into one platform ?

Do you actually get to play HD pokémon on this?!

Pokémon on the Switch will only support HD during battles and a few select caves.

Just like they did with the Nintendo Thrii Dii Ess.

It's everything that I thought it will be, and I'm glad because it's all I wanted. Very hyped for the Switch!

And I hope this 3D Mario is more like 64 and Sunshine than Galaxy, or worst, 3D World.

Less than Xbone.

It's actually a fairly clever name. Encourages people to "switch" to Nintendo for all their home and mobile gaming needs.

Won't happen, of course (most gamers are happier elsewhere, as Nintendo doesn't cater to their tastes), but there have been worse names.

Nintendo wants to fix with Switch console what it messed up with Wii U

http://www.cnbc.com/2016/10/20/nint...tch-console-what-it-messed-up-with-wii-u.html

After the rather disastrous performance of the Wii U, Nintendo will explore new waters next March with its new console — the Nintendo Switch.

The new console, a hybrid of a home entertainment device and a portable game system, is straight out of the company's playbook: Look for ways to present video games that are vastly different from the competition. But it could be an uphill battle.
Nintendo Switch will allow players to play the same game on their living room couch or on the go, the company said. At home, it sits in a docking station that's connected to the TV, but owners can lift a screen out of the dock, attach controllers to it and make it a portable device, which happens to be approximate size and appearance as a Wii U controller.

"Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's president and COO. "It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries."

It's just one of Nintendo's strategies for getting the company back on track. Nintendo shares have seen big gains this year as the company has more broadly expanded into the mobile market, with titles like "Pokemon Go" and the upcoming "Super Mario Run."

While Nintendo teased consumer appetites for the Switch at an event Thursday, it did not announce the system's price, specifications, exact launch date, or which titles it will debut with. Nintendo has showcased "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wind" with the system, but has not confirmed it will launch simultaneously with Switch. The company said it doesn't plan on releasing that information until shortly before the system goes on sale, which it said would be in March.

One of Nintendo's biggest problems with the Wii U was that many developers had stopped making games for the platform at the end of its lifespan. To pre-empt any criticism, the company announced a list of nearly 50 publishing partners, including all major game-making studios like Activision, Electronic Arts and Take-Two Interactive Software.

The company has also acknowledged it failed to market the Wii U properly, neglecting to showcase what made it unique. With the three minute teaser video it released Thursday about Switch, it's hoping to rectify that for its next generation system.
"When we articulate the core prop that is [Switch], I am convinced the product is unique and differentiating," Fils-Aime told CNBC.com in June at the E3 expo. "There's nothing I've seen ... that dissuades me from that belief. As long as we effectively communicate why you've got to have it, we will do well."

So, why would the average joe choose this over their smartphone / tablet? I mean, judging by the video that's the target audience.. I don't buy it though.

A console is much more than a controller, but I'm really not feeling the detachable Joy-Cons. They look really awkward to hold, limited in ability, and when attached to the screen are asymmetrical which I think is inferior. Just doesn't look like it's for me.
Unless they made a legit Metroid game.

I was looking at the trailer and noticed that the 'joycon grip' seems to have some bulky grips on the back. It's an interesting design choice, probably helps a lot to get a good grip for such a square button layout. I'm not sure this has been discussed yet, but it caught my eye.

Cool. Was wondering how the site came down, but looking at it, I can see they're going in on smartphones, which is really where all the real money is being made these days. Very cool concept to bring in the social component so strongly too. The photo with the Switch in a car basically says it all. Not needing to buy more controllers (clutter) is also a strong value for today's world.
This is a very strong pitch in terms of design to value. Well done, designers.

And now I will retreat to Offtopic once more. Just wanted to see what was up.

The fucking scenarios are hilarious. Like any group of friends that are getting together to play couch co-op are almost certainly using a TV. Maybe I could see the road trip thing happening , but no. I don't know anyone who are getting together with their friends to pass out tiny gimped remotes (Remember playing Mario Cart on Wii and how much the Wii-mote sucked ass) and play on a 6.2" screen out on a park bench or something.

Not saying the option is bad, but they seemed to really focus on it, when that's really not something that will be used extensively or is as anywhere near important as the titles and system details.
